As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.
The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: GE 40 gallon water heater
GE water heater started to burn and fill the apartment with smoke. The breaker did not trip. The house could have burned down or someone could have been injured by the smoke. This happened in our [REDACTED]rental which was occupied by a guest. Guest escaped the apartment when it was filling up with smoke. We had to turn the breaker off manually because it didnt trip.

The product, in the report: electric water heater
(11/13/2022) The consumer has a safety concern about a potential fire hazard. The consumer stated that there was a low voltage error code displayed on the product. The consumer contacted the firm and was advised to remove the cover on the top of the product and take a picture. When the consumer removed the cover, he saw that the electrical wires had melted. The firm told him that it was an installation error. The consumer stated that the product was installed in January, 2021 and he never saw an error code before.
The consumer did the repair on the wires. The same thing happened again two days later.
Here is my “Description of Risk of Harm”:
There was a Risk of Harm by a fire at/on the poorly designed/defectively manufactured water heater (that could easily have spread and caused a structure fire in the residential home) when the wire nuts got hot enough to melt in 2 different incidents. There was a Risk of Harm of electrocution to anyone touching the metal water heater when the poorly designed/defectively manufactured water heater when the wire nuts got hot enough to melt in 2 different incidents – thus exposing live 220v/high amperage wires to touch metal surfaces that are accessible to homeowners or service personnel.

The product, in the report: GE 40 gallon electrical hot water heater
The temperature/pressure relief valve on top of our 40 gallon hot water heater was leaking water. After disconnecting the power to the water tank at the breaker box, I removed the cover of the electrical junction box on top of the hot water heater and found the 240 Volt wires completely immersed in a pool of water inside the junction box.
I believe that the designers of this hot water heater tank overlooked the fact that, if water begins to leak anywhere on top of the tank, the watter will immediately fill in the 1.5 1nch deep pocket of the 240 Volt water heater’s electrical junction box and the wires inside, and this will create a hazardous situation which may electrocute/kill a person(s).
Attached you will find pictures of the old pressure relief valve, and please notice the calcification accumulated on the electrical junction box interior due to the water.

The product, in the report: GE GeoSpring Hybrid Electric Water Heater
The electric heat pump water heater was installed on 7/15/10. On 12/6/11, water started spraying out of the top of the water heater, resulting in flooding in my basement.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that the outlet pipe had corroded through. There were also signs of corrosion on the rest of the tank. I contacted GE, and they told me that corrosion is not covered by warranty, even though there is no mention of that in the warranty language.
Corrosion failure in a water heater that is only a little over a year old is a design defect.
