The product, in the report: Hot water heater

This caller is reporting her Bradford White 80 gallon Electric Hot Water Tank that caught fire February 17th or 18th, 2015.

believed to have been purchased 2009. Two months after installation it turned off causing a need to replace the thermostat in 2013.

February 17th or 18th, 2015 the caller and two of her grandchildren were upstairs on the fourth level of her home, and since her son was over asked him to check the hot water heater.

He looked at the unit then called his mother to show her that as quickly as the door to this unit was opened you could smell burning and where there were burn marks within the unit.

The caller states that there were signs a few days before the fire; two days before when the water became very cold and then turned brown.

She contacted the manufacturer who blamed it on her electrical wiring, breakers, etc.

The caller hired an electrician who checked the breakers, wiring etc. February 25th, 2015 after the manufacturer tried to place the origin of problem on the electrical wiring etc. The electrician assured the caller that the breakers, wiring as well as all other electric are fine and correctly working.

He did state that the fire had to have begun and extinguished with the wiring within her tank. There have been no injuries to report The caller intends to contact the manufacturer again with the electricians report.

Made Oct 5, 2011, sent to the company Oct 13, 2011, published by CPSC Oct 27, 2011

The product, in the report: 50 Gallon Electric Hot Water Heater

Electric hot water heater intermittently overheats water because thermostats stick, resulting in unexpected scalding hot water. In the 9 1/2 years of ownership, the upper thermostat has been replaced 4 times, the lower thermostat once.

Today one of the thermostats would not release resulting in the water within the tank to boil forcing the safety pressure relief valve to open. Several gallons of boiling water were released causing some minor damage to surrounding areas.

This was previous reported to the CSPC in Feb 2008 and a CPSC representative came to my house and took two of the defective thermostats with her.
