I am a HVAC contractor. I was giving an estimate for this customer to replace his gas furnace. I was smelling gas in this utility rm. I checked for gas leaks with an electronic leak detector and discovered quite a bit of Nat gas to be leaking from the corrugated part of a newer stainless steel gas flex connector. I am not sure of the age of this connector but the water heater was replaced in year 2006. We have possession of this connector. These connectors are still on the market and they are an un-coated type. There are also stainless steel coated type. I am aware of un-coated brass connectors not being allowed however, this is the newer stainless steel type. This connector shows signs of surface rusting.

I have additional information to attach to this report. I am now in possession of the failed gas flex connector. This stainless steel connector was leaking natural gas through the corrugated part of the assembly. I also attached a link to a youtube video I made showing the parts that are leaking. This is stainless steel metal that is leaking gas. Video: https://youtu.be/OlruPetjkts
