No one hurt Made Jan 30, 2025, sent to the company Feb 3, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 18, 2025
The product, in the report: Honeywell gas valve; Model: WV8840B1158
I had a state brand water heater (A O Smith) installed in 2020. in 2022 it started leaking natural gas at the valve. the valve was replaced and in Oct 2024 it started leaking gas again in the same spot. had a new one installed a few days later, new one leaked out of the box. A O Smith sent me brand new one, tht one leaked out of the box as well. about a week later I got another one from AO Smith as well as a new thermal coupler. again defective out of the box. this cost $860 in labor costs. after that AO Smith said to have plumber put in a new hot water heater of a different brand and they would pay for it except labor costs. [REDACTED] installed in november 2024 and cost $1500 in labor costs and no gas leak now. i filed comlaint to [REDACTED], employee from AO Smith reached out and after about a month they agreed to refund me $440. during this conversation the employee stated that the engineers messed up on the material for the gas valves and they arent strong enough for the bolts or gas pressure. they know this but have been trying to get their employees to tell consumers is a normal amount of gas, or its a special venting attribute, or they send out new parts and hope the customer gives us. the employee was disgruntled and said its been happening for a couple years now. I have talked to several other people with this issue that just allow the leak because their water heater is in an area away from living spaces. its not safe. There was recently a home explosion in my area and it got my mind on it again, went into [REDACTED] and its so scary how many people are having this problem.

First aid Made Apr 29, 2021, sent to the company May 4, 2021, published by CPSC May 18, 2021
The product, in the report: Honeywell gas control valve on a [REDACTED] water heater. We have a water heater with a Honeywell gas (LP) control valve (model WV8840B5077) that has been running too hot causing skin burns. This control valve was having issues in 2017 and was replaced by the installer. Yet we’re again experiencing the same issues. The installer is planning to replace it again. The issues we’ve been having include: 1- Runs too hot causing burns. 2- It shuts off randomly and requires re-start once or twice per week. In our opinion there should have been a recall by Honeywell as the installer told us that there has been a lot of complaints about the same issues we’ve been having.
