The product, in the report: White-Rodgers Hotrod Universal Nitride Ignitor Upgrade Kit Replaces OEM, White-Rodgers, and competitive [REDACTED] igniters Nitride construction ensures high durability Includes universal breakaway bracket for easy installation https://www.homedepot.com/p/Copeland-White-Rodgers-Hotrod-Universal-Nitride-Ignitor-Upgrade-Kit-21D64-2/300683010#overlay

I purchased a universal ignitor for my gas water heater. The product is sold by Copland White-Rodgers Hotrod Universal Nitride Ignitor Upgrade Kit (see link below). I replaced the original ignitor a few months ago with this one and it failed last night. After I took a look at it today, I realized the part there is a problem with the part. The insulation melted and the 2 leads shorted to each other, to the point where the circuit breaker tripped. It seemed strange that the wires were melted together when they were inside the original protective heat shield, which is visible burned. When I went to install the replacement part I noticed a paper/plastic tag with the manufacture’s info. I then realized this is exactly where the wires had melted together. So while the wire may have high temp insulation the tag is not. It eventually caught fire, melted the insulation, and allowed the wire to short out, tripping the breaker. I’m not sure why the sticker isn’t further away from the ignitor or flame. This is a flaw in assembly, and someone is going to have a fire because of this.
