The product, in the report: hand held vacuum

Below is my October, 2016 letter to the Chairman of Royal Appliance regarding the danger of their product, Dirt Devil, Model: BD10045 that was ignored. Product can easily fall off the wall, injuring a child.

    Re: Dirt Devil, Model: BD10045 Plant U; Mfg Code: L 15B U

    Dear [REDACTED]:

I have purchased the above vacuum based on the good reviews I read on Amazon. I have had many Dustbusters in the past, which did not have the problem reported below.

I mounted the unit on the wall, as per instructions; however, the unit is only held in place by very light charging contacts. It falls off the base, landing on the switch, turning on the unit, draining it, making it a dangerous trip hazard.

In September, 2016, I contacted your tech department and they offered to send out a new charging base—which solution I questioned, if it would be any better. After many weeks, I called, as I had not received the base. I was told that the base was on back-order and may be available in November. I was invited to peel off the label and cut off the cord off the unit. I protested that I would not do this until I have the replacement unit, as the vacuum function still works, but I will give my credit card, which they could charge, to guarantee my compliance. Once I returned the requested part, Royal could refund my money. Your agent and supervisor, both told me that this was unacceptable. I had to disable to unit, while I wait the indeterminate time for the replacement.

But more importantly, I explained that this 3.28 lbs. unit—more if it is filled with debris—can land on the head of a child, would that I mounted it higher. One of my Dustbusters is mounted higher, but the unit slides securely into a plastic holster. Is Royal so cavalier with the safety of children? I will ask that question to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Consumer Reports and Amazon.

Having still not heard from your company, I now await your response to my complaint.

    Sincerely,

    [REDACTED]
