The product, in the report: Miele Guard L1 – SUFEO PowerLine vacuum cleaner Serial Number: 199264861
Dear U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:
Attached is my completed consumer product safety report concerning a Miele Guard L1 vacuum.
I am reporting that the Miele Guard L1 vacuum caught fire during use, resulting in property damage to my home and a serious impact on my family.
Product information:
Manufacturer: Miele Product: Miele Guard L1 – SUFEO PowerLine Serial Number: 199264861 Material Number: 12811590 Article Number: 41UFE037 Retailer: Wayfair
Following the incident, the matter was reported to both the retailer and Miele. Wayfair acknowledged my property-damage report.
Miele initially informed me that its Engineering department had determined that the electrical issue originated outside the appliance and was not caused by the vacuum. However, Miele subsequently acknowledged in writing that, because the original unit was no longer available, it was unable to perform a full physical inspection or comprehensive evaluation and that its assessment was necessarily limited to the submitted documentation and photographs. I repeatedly asked Miele to identify the specific external source it believed caused the electrical issue and to provide the technical evidence supporting that determination. I also requested Miele’s formal position regarding the property damage. Those substantive questions remain unanswered despite further escalation to Miele executive management and a final written notice.
Because this incident involved a reported product fire and property damage, I am asking CPSC to review this matter as a consumer product-safety incident and determine whether further investigation or other appropriate action is warranted.
Please confirm receipt of this report and advise if any additional documentation or information is required.
Thank You
Report Updated 9/30/26: Based on what I personally observed, the Miele Guard L1 vacuum was operating when the fire began, and the fire appeared to originate in or at the vacuum. I am reporting the vacuum as the product involved and the apparent source of the fire. I do not have an independent forensic fire-cause determination, and the original unit was not available for a physical inspection.
