The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: - Model: UH70400 - Type: Hoover WindTunnel Air Upright Vacuum

URGENT SAFETY HAZARD Hoover WindTunnel Air UH70400 (Fire Risk)

I am writing to report a serious and dangerous defect involving my Hoover WindTunnel Air upright vacuum, model UH70400.

When the unit is powered on, visible flames are present inside the motor housing in the lower base. In addition, the unit emitted a large puff of smoke, which I believed could trigger building-wide smoke alarms. This created a significant fire risk and an immediate safety concern.

The vacuum has been unplugged and will not be used again.

I have attached a photo documenting the condition and location of the issue.

The product, in the report: Hoover UH70241 WindTunnel vacuum.

While using the Hoover Model WH70241 Windtunnel vacuum I noticed a cut through the power cord insulation that exposed one of the copper conductors. This could easily have caused a serious electrical shock if you grabbed that part of the cord. Fortunately no injuries occurred, but the vacuum is clearly not safe to use. The cord looked as if it was cut by the vacuum handle hinge mechanism. If the cord falls within the hinge when the handle is lowered, as it easily may, it can be cut by the hinge when the handle is returned to the upright position.

While using the Hoover Wind Tunnel 3 Max (UH72625V), the cord came loose and rendered the unit inoperable. The ground and hot wires were showing and I had to unplug the unit in case of fire. Hoover honored the unsafe warranty and sent a new unit. The new unit did the same thing. They will not honor another warranty. This unit is unsafe because to repair it you have to take the electrical unit apart which is unsafe. It could also cause a fire or electrocution if attempt at repair. Hoover is still producing this unsafe unit and taking peoples money.

The product, in the report: Hoover Linx Rechargeable Cordless Vacuum with Power Brush, Wind Tunnel Technology. Grey and black. 43” tall. Removable lint collector.

I own a Hoover Linx cordless vacuum. I was vacuuming and started to lift the vacuum to move it. Suddenly, the top portion of the stick vacuum detached itself from the rest of the vacuum and hit me in the left eye. I had recently had cataract eye surgery in that eye. I could see that one area at the side of the eye was going to swell and was unsure off any other damage so I immediately put ice on the area. So far, my vision in that eye seems unaffected.

I was using a Hoover Windtunnel vacuum (UH30310) to vacuum normally when the cord shorted out inside the vacuum. There was an audible pop and sparks shot out of the hole through which the cord enters the vacuum. I unplugged it and the cord was burned through just inside the vacuum body. No damage to the cord was noticed previously and the cord was not stretched tight. The vacuum was purchased in March 2019.

The product, in the report: Vacuum cleaner Hoover windtunnel max Bagged Maroon color

I wanted to make a report because our vacuum cleaner caught fire. It was less than two years old. Hoover Windtunnel Max Bagged. Model # UH 30600 Series XH12.0 MFG code L 20A AT My wife uses the vacuum two or three times a week to vacuum the house. We have wood floors and rugs. My wife was vacuuming the living room, it was a bare floor. She heard a pop and smelled smoke. Where the power supply cable exists the vacuum, the power supply cord was on fire . The outlet also made a pop noise. No one was injured. My wife unplugged the cable and the cord stopped burning. I’ve passed and certified in OSHA general contractor training. I shut off the power and inspected the outlet. There are no signs of damage or faulty outlet or wiring. I opened up the vacuum around the power supply cable. Not only was the cable burnt on the outside of the vacuum, both the white/black wire from the AC supply have burn marks, the brown/black power supply for the power button have burn marks. All four of the wires have burn marks coming out of the back of vacuum.

The product, in the report: Hoover U5509-900 Elite Rewind Deluxe Bagless Upright Vacuum

Hoover U5509-900 Elite Rewind Deluxe Bagless Upright Vacuum. This is my second such incidence. The cord rewind mechanism is stripping/slicing into the power cord. This is a potential electrical fire hazard. Had I not noticed it could have potentially shorted out, possibly causing risk of electric shock to myself or my wife. While this was purchased some time back (my wife is disabled and we need an upstairs AND downstairs vacuum) we thought these models were helpful with her limitations. I am disappointed in the introduction of a hazard yet again.

The product, in the report: Hoover Model UH71013 vacuum cleaner, upright, rewind, bagless

The Hoover UH71013 cleaner I bought in the Fall of 2017 has a defective on/off switch. The original switch fell apart. I took it out and the plastic body was melted and the plastic insulators around the switch lead terminals were black. I ordered a replacement switch and installed and tested it. I ran the vacuum before mounting it on the handle to test it. I noticed the switch body and terminals were hot to the touch after only five minutes of operation. I then took the switch off the leads and clipped them directly together and ran machine for ten minutes. The terminals and wires were cool to the touch confirming the switch was too weak for the circuit. The cleaner is rated at 12 amps. I took the old switch apart and noticed the contacts were very tiny: about the size of a pinhead. This switch seems a bad design for this product. This product should be recalled.

We just disposed of a Windtunnel Bagless Canister Vacuum #3755. WE have replaced the plug ourselves a couple of times b/c of issues with it shorting. WE threw it away when it sparked and caused a GFCI to burn out.

We fixed the cord multiple times b/c this was a really good vacuum, other than the cord/fire risk that I’ve just discovered.

The product, in the report: Hoover WindTunnel Bagless Canister Vacuum model S3755.

The brush on the powerhead on my vacuum cleaner stopped rotating. It would start momentarily and then stop, but the motor kept running and the pitch of the motor was really high. I thought perhaps the belt had broken or come off, so I unscrewed the cover off of the top of the powerhead to take a look. The belt was still on, and seemed to be in good condition, but not still not turning the brush. The shaft that turns the brush was extremely hot. Any time I touched anything, I made sure to unplug the vacuum cleaner. At one point I was checking the cords and connections to the powerhead with the vacuum plugged in and there was a small flash/spark. I didn’t think anything of it until I was looking online to see if I could find a replacement powerhead and saw the recalls. (I of course am no longer using the powerhead).

Another incident occurred a few day ago where the cord on our vacuum broke and caused a fire. This product has only been out of the box for about a week. this is the 6th one that has had cord failures with in a week of being put into service. Our cleaner was using the vacuum to clean a house when the cord broke in half before the stress relief. This caused a small fire. Luckily the cleaner was not injured nor was any damage done to the customers home. Hoovers lack of response is appalling.

I entered our office address as the incident address due to our customers confidentiality.

The product, in the report: Hoover Commercial Porta-Power, Portable canister vacuum. That is carried with a shoulder strap or worn on the waist with a belt strap.

I made a report on 12/6/18 [REDACTED]. That report is the 1st vacuum we had catch a customers wall outlet on fire. I now have 2 more vacuums over the last couple of weeks that have caused scorched outlets. Both of these current incidents have occurred while the cleaner is attempting to unplug the equipment. When they pull the plug from the wall there is a small plasma reaction due to the poor craftsmanship of the cord as a whole. I have had to go to our customers houses to replace the outlet and face plate every time this has happened. We have been lucky thus far that none of our employees have been injured. The problem is inside of the plug the connection between the prongs of the plug and the wires of the cord is breaking and due to the construction of the plug the prong stays in with no visible signs of breaking. Ive used our office location as the incident address do to confidentiality between our company and our customers

One incident occurred again today. When one of our cleaners plugged in the vacuum and turned it on she was unaware that one of the prongs on the plug had broken inside the solid plastic plug. And a ball of flames came out of the houses outlet. This is the 3rd one of this product that has had the plug break in this unusual way.

Another issue with the same product is that where the cord enters the body of the vacuum, it has been breaking and exposing the wires. this has occurred on about 50% of these vacuums that we have purchased within the last year.

Re: Hoover Air Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner BH52120PC Date Coda: H15A U Attachments

The charging/battery system of the referenced product proved, In my case, to be dangerous, and might easily have caused an electrical fire.

A summary of the attachments to document the problem follows: (1) The Hoover vacuum cleaner was purchased In August, 2017; (2) The battery was being charged for only the second or third time about September 19; (3) The electric outlet showed a noticeable burn mark and was hot to the touch, as was the charger plug. The charger plug was Immediately removed from the outlet. The left male prong of the plug was burned through. When later removed, the electric outlet Itself was also burned through, destroyed, and had to be replaced; (4) Contact was Immediately begun with Hoover’s customer service representatives with a view to alerting the company about this dangerous product; (5) I was asked to return the product along with the damaged electric outlet to a location assumed to be Hoover’s factory. This was done September 22; (6) Requests were made to customer service representatives to, at the vary least, Inform me of of Hoover’s findings In the matter. These requests have, to date, been Ignored; (7) On November 11, a letter of concern about the matter was sent to the executive officer of Hoover. The requests In that letter have also, to date, been Ignored.

This Information Is being provided to the Safety Commission for whatever use It may wish to make of It, but I urge the Commission to Investigate the matter. The Commission Is probably In a far better position than I am to get Information from Hoover. All I can offer at this point Is that this product was/ Is dangerous, and as I told Hoover’s executive officer and others, It could have started a disastrous house fire.

I still believe that an electrical fire was this close to happening. Of course, I am happy that It did not happen. On the other hand, If a fire had occurred, perhaps I might have gotten more attention In a lawsuit against Hoover than I have so far, which has been little to none.

The product, in the report: Hoover Windtunnel T Series, Rewind model UH70130 Mfg Code U10A. Residential vacuum with retractable cord mechanism.

I have a Hoover Wind Tunnel vacuum model UH70130, MFG Code E10A. The retractable cord mechanism does not work correctly and catches the cord or the cord get’s stuck when trying to pull it out causing the cord to become frayed/worn in areas and the electrical wires to become exposed. While vacuuming my home on July 10, 2017 I was holding the cord in area where the cord is worn and experienced a small shock while operating the vacuum. I did not have serious injury but obviously concerned so I looked into similar problems with this vacuum and found that other Hoover vacuums have been recalled for same problem, just not my model. I contacted Hoover customer service and was told that the cord damage is just normal wear and tear. My vacuum works just fine other than the defective cord and retractable cord mechanism, which I do not consider normal wear and tear, especially in light of other Hoover product recalls for similar defect.

The product, in the report: Hoover (also known as TTI Floor Care) vacuum Model # UH70820

Earlier this year (March 3, 2014) I bought a new Hoover (also known as TTI Floor Care) vacuum Model # UH70820 from Target. Immediately out of the box the motor made a humming noise. A few months after owning it the vacuum Model # UH70820 it overheated on the bottom and burned holes or roller marks in to my shag rug. I filled out a complaint form on their website June 25, 2014.I did not hear back from Hoover/TTI Floor Care so I emailed them again on July 18, 2014. I didn’t hear from Hoover/TTI Floor Care until late August 2014. The lady who called me was very kind and informative. She knew a lot about Hoover/TTI Floor Care products and explained to me that Model # UH70820 doesn’t have an automatic roller shut off feature. That when you are using the hose feature the rollers continue to roll, causing the bottom of the vacuum to overheat. She explained the damage claim process and that she would send me model that was redesigned with an automatic roller shutoff so that when I use the hose the replacement won’t further damage my property. I received my replacement much sooner than expected, I was told 7-10 days from the date Hoover/TTI Floor Care ordered it but it was here in 2-3 days. Again immediately out of the box the replacement has a humming or vibrating noise coming from the motor. I’ve not yet used the hose attachment feature, mostly out of fear of further damaging my property.Last week I’d realized it had been 5 weeks since I filled my damage claim against Hoover/TTI Floor Care and I was supposed to hear back from Hoover within 2-3 weeks with a determination of my claim. I emailed my Hoover/TTI Floor Care representative and she called my fiancé back this morning. The Hoover/TTI Floor Care Engineer could not find anything wrong the vacuum so my property damage claim was denied. I called back and a request was submitted for a supervisor to call me back. I spoke to a Hoover/TTI Floor Care supervisor today and she informed me that the engineer can’t duplicate this in his lab which means I must have used it incorrectly. They claim you have to use the vacuum with the back turned towards the object you’re vacuuming with the hose. This is not in the manual but non sequential because the hose is short and that’s the only way you can reach the back of the couch I was vacuuming any way. They further claimed that you have to have it tilted slightly back which is contradictory to the manual that states, “Brushroll continues to turn while product is turned on and handle is in upright position. To avoid damage to carpet, rugs, furniture and flooring, avoid tipping cleaner or setting it on furniture, fringed area rugs, or carpeted stairs during tool use.” I assured them that it wasn’t tipped and that it was in the upright position which is what the manual advised. She read the manual with me and noted my use. I requested that the engineer test on a high area rug like mine and not your standard carpeting but I’m not optimistic that will change his mind. Hoover/TTI Floor Care doesn’t feel that a vacuuming overheating is a safety or fire issue but I disagree. If it got hot enough to melt my rug and turn it into what feels like hard plastic this definitely is a safety issue. A vacuum has no business getting that hot.

Hoover Windtunnel Rewind T Series upright vacuum cleaner. There is a hose on the back that detaches at one end for implement use. Unfortunately, the beater bar on the main machine continues to rotate while the hose and implements are in use. The hose is spring loaded as well so it is impossible to use the hose at any distance from the machine itself without pulling the machine toward the user. I was down on the floor vacuuming dust underneath a piece of furniture and my hair got caught in the beater bar. The power switch is at the top of the handle, which I could not reach with my hair caught in the bottom of there machine. Luckily my husband was home to rescue me, but this is a very dangerous thing! If it had been a necktie it could have been a strangulation incident. Could have been catastrophic if it was a child.

I started to smell burning oil and plastic (I guess), then noticed there was a trail of black debris that had fallen out of the vacuum. I turned it off. I checked the belt located at the bottom of the vacuum, it was ok. I was going to throw it away but Hoover wants it back (I had emailed them after it happened). This is the second vacuum of this series that I have gotten from them. The first one tripped my circuit breaker. I contacted them about that vacuum, they said it was my circuit breaker, I had my circuit breaker replaced and the vacuum still tripped it. Then they said to send that vacuum back to them and they would replace it. They did the the first mentioned vacuum. Same series. I can get the serial number for the original vacuum if you need it.

I have a Hoover vacuum which today started emitting sparks from it’s motor. I have had the vacuum for a few years. Today I transmitted this information to the makers of the vacuum. They have refused to offer assistance, other than to suggest that I have the vacuum repaired at my expense. Because of the vacuum is a fire hazard I would have hoped for more assistance from them.

Here is a copy of the message I transmitted to the makers of the vacuum:

    sparking/flaming motor on U5018-900

Last night I changed the bag on the Hoover vacuum we have. The changing was uneventful. This morning I operated the vacuum and noticed a burning smell. I took off the belt cover to see if anything was blocking the movable parts from moving. Next I removed the rotating bush and the belt and I was able to see back to where the motor was. A plasma (flame looking) light source could be seen from where the motor was.

Thus it very much appears to me like the motor for this vacuum is sparking when it’s in use. This is a new occurrence for us. The vacuum has worked from before this morning.

The sparking (plasma flame looking light & burning smell) from the motor is of course a fire hazard.

Due to the nature of this failure I wanted to request assistance from you in this matter, with either repair or replacement.

Flame type light & smoke is definitely being emitted from the motor for this vacuum.

    ---end of quote

I received a response from TTI Floor Care North America, the makers of the Hoover vacuum in question, first to call their customer service department via phone. Then when I called they said they could not help with a sparking motor over the phone.

Here is one thing they could have done “over the phone:” Offer to have the vacuum repaired or replaced. These words could have passed from their mouths into their phone and then into my ears. But, they refused to do this, even though the vacuum is now a fire hazard.

Here is the product info for the vacuum:

My son (17 year old) was vacuuming this afternoon when the unit started to “smell like fire”. He unplugged it and it burned his hand. I called Hoover and they said this unit was NOT recalled but many of the same model are with the same issue. This model needs to be added to that list immediately!

Consumer just started vacuuming for about 5 minutes. While vacuuming the unit exploded and the accessories went flying throughout. The consumer stated when the vacuum exploded it emitted a strong gas odor. One of the accessory parts popped off of the vacuum and hit the consumer in the right eye.

The consumer placed a towel over nose and mouth and suffered injuries.

The consumer gathered the pieces of the vacuum.

    Consumer has contacted the manufacturer.

Consumer was on phone with CPSC as this event was unfolding and did not realize the extent of her injuries until she got off the phone and was deeply concerned about the bitter odor and smoke coming from this vacuum.

The product, in the report: HOOVER UH70120 MFG. CODE: E11A SERIES: BE12.0

We own a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner Model UH70120 MFG. CODE E11A and feel there is a serious potential safety issue (a fire or burn hazzard) when the retractable power cord remains inside the unit while running. For example, a consumer may only pull out the cord just enough to plug into a wall then start using the attachment hose with the vacuum in place and running while cord is inside.

What happens is the cord wound up inside the unit becomes super hot and if you pull the cord out it almost burns your hand and the cord insulation may even melt.

I have a photo of the label on the vacuum cleaner for model verification.

I urge the CPSC to get this model a test this scenario out in your laboratory.

You know the deal... not all consumers will follow safety advice or common sense or may not know about best practices when it comes to elelctrical cords and not having them coiled up tight like when inside this vacuum cleaner.

Hoover® WindTunnel T-Series™ Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaners with Cord Rewind Feature - I purchased in 2010 for $120.00 at Target. I have been getting a very hot cord while using. The rewind feature for the cords jams and failes to lock as well! It is splitting the coating on now 2 areas of the cord exposing wire! The vacuum is now too dangerous to use because of the exposed wiring and hot cord may cause fire, burn or electrocution!! Model UH70120, MFG CODE:C10A

The product, in the report: Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner Manf code: F10A Model: F8100900 Series BB10.5

Bought Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner about 1 1/2 years ago. Used about 5 times since then. Cleaner still like new.

On 9/18/2012 began to clean carpet in bedroom 1. Cleaner began making a really loud rumbling noise. I stopped the cleaner to make sure that I had all containers for solution, water, and dirty water in properly. They were. Turned cleaner back on. Noise began again and grew even louder.

Then machine began bellowing out white - horrible smelling smoke - enough smoke to fill up the second level (2300+ sq ft) of my home. Just as I thought “what in the world?” here come some flames shooting out toward me and then toward the drapes. Scary!

I immediately turned off the machine, ran and unplugged it, and began to move it away from the bed and drapes and toward the tile in the master bath. As I was doing this I noticed the carpet in this bedroom was charred black!!

The machine was so hot that - as I was attempting to get it into the master bath - it even charred the carpet in the master bedroom just by rolling over it!!!!

I finally managed to get the machine into the bath, turned it on it’s side to get the “hot portion” of the unit off the floor and into the air and the ran to the windows to open them and turn on the ceiling fans to get the smoke and the smell out of the house.

God was with me. There is no other explanation. Otherwise the drapes, the bed, the carpet, and me would have caught on fire!!!!! Plus the smell...oh my. I get migraines and needless to say this scare and smell triggered a fantastic one that stayed for two days.

Once I had done these steps, I called the 800 number for Hoover to report what just happened. They could have cared less. They told me to take photos - I did. They asked if I wanted to file a claim on the damage. I do. They then stated that I should get a repair/replace estimate. I have. They also stated they would contact FedEx and have FedEx email me a shipping label to send the machine back to them.

To date I have NOT received the label yet. I have called and emailed Hoover several times. They ignore me. The only response I get is one rep did leave a message and said the label was sent to me last Tuesday and if I did not have it I must have deleted it.

I received 2nd and 3rd degree burns last year from a brush fire on both my legs. Needless to say when this carpet cleaner did this I nearly went into shock! I want this dangerous machine out of my home. However, Hoover is doing nothing to help this process along.

I sincerely think something should be published on these machines and this company should take responsibility for making such a dangerous piece of home cleaning equipment.

The consumer stated that when she would vacuum, the under carriage would get jammed and start to smoke and smell as if it is burning. The consumer was searching the Internet and came across Release #11-124.

The manufacturer was contacted earlier this year and she was offered the remedy. The consumer was instructed to send back the bottom portion of the vacuum along with the hose. In return she was to receive a refurbished vacuum. Approximately 2 weeks later the consumer received a vacuum, but it was not her original unit that she sent in. After using the vacuum, she noticed immediately that the same failure had re-occurred by the under carriage jamming and a burning odor. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

The consumer wanted to express her concerns about her vacuum cleaner. The consumer stated that the vacuum cleaner has a retractable cord for the wall outlet. However, the consumer mentioned that the cord retracting mechanism is not working, therefore the cord continues to be wound up in the vacuum, while the product is being used. The consumer has to use the product and hold the retractable cord in her hand while she is using the vacuum cleaner.

The consumer stated that while she was entertaining company over the holidays, (date unknown) the consumer found that the cord was melting and emitted a burning odor. The consumer was not injured but she discontinued using the vacuum cleaner. The consumer stated that her home was not damaged.

The consumer also did not find it necessary to call her local fire department or her home insurance company. The consumer took the product to the retailer yesterday and was told to call the CPSC for a DPCI number. The consumer called the firm after noticing the wire had melted last Thursday. The firm advised the consumer to take the product back to the retailer.

Consumer stated that the vacuum cleaner overheats. The instructions were followed correctly but the vacuum cleaner does not operate properly .

Consumer is concerned that the safety device does not work and feels that this can be a fire hazard and burn hazard.

Consumer had contacted the manufacture with no resolution.

UPDATE: The vacuum has a “Vacuum only” setting and a “Vacuum plus brush” setting. The original, and its replacement, both run hot enough to burn the hand. There is an internal overheat sensor which suts the vacuum motor but not the brush motor, so it sounds like the machine is still working. It took a long while to realize what was happening, since it sounded like it was still working. There were frequent overheats in the first unit. A second was purchased with same problem. This is a burn and fire hazard. It is not resolved by installing an overheat cutout switch. Rather, the cutout is a tacit acknowledgement of the design flaw.

The product, in the report: Hoover U6485-900 Windtunnel Anniversary Self-Propelled Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner

This is not a single incident, so there’s really not a date attached to it. Relatives have purchased a Hoover “Windtunnel Anniversary Self-Propelled Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner”, model #U6485900. I have been around when it has been used. Having previously owned a number of brands of vacuums, including very powerful, modern units (e.g. Dyson), and various Shop-Vac and similar industrial models, I am shocked at the noise level near this unit while it is running. It does not sound like there is something wrong with it, so I would presume that this is the normal noise level for this product, not a faulty unit. I will say from experience that the noise level is comparable to, for example, an electric angle grinder, which requires use of hearing protection apparatus. There is absolutely no way that this is a safe noise level for anything more than momentary exposure. Perhaps there needs to be more strict monitoring and regulation of noise levels from home appliances, including vacuums, blenders, and other potentially-offending devices.
