  1. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Sep 27, 2026, sent to the company Oct 6, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 21, 2026

The product, in the report: Product: Eureka PowerSpeed Upright Vacuum Model: NEU280

On September 25, 2026, at approximately [REDACTED] PM, I was vacuuming underneath a couch using the hose attachment on my Eureka PowerSpeed upright vacuum, model NEU280. The vacuum was in its upright position, and the brush roller was still spinning. While I was using the hose attachment, my 11-month-old son knocked the vacuum over. As I moved to intervene, his thumb became caught in the underside of the vacuum. I immediately stopped and removed his hand. His thumb sustained a significant injury, with the outer layer of skin appearing to have been torn or removed. The injury initially appeared severe, and medical personnel were concerned about a possible fracture. My son was taken for medical evaluation and underwent X-rays. The completed radiology report confirmed that there were no fractures. However, we were informed that ligament or other soft-tissue injuries may still be present and cannot necessarily be ruled out by X-rays. The injury caused substantial damage to the skin on his thumb. Medical personnel treated the wound with ointment and a dressing. Product Safety Hazard The incident raises concerns about the accessibility of the underside and operating brush roller area of the vacuum when the unit is upright and in use. The vacuum was being used with its hose attachment, while the brush roller remained in motion. When my infant son knocked the vacuum over, his thumb became caught underneath it as I moved to intervene, resulting in a significant injury. This incident raises concerns about the potential for serious finger or hand injuries to young children who come into contact with the underside of an operating vacuum, particularly if the unit is accidentally tipped over. I am submitting this report to document the incident and bring attention to the potential injury hazard associated with this product. Injury and Medical Treatment Significant skin injury to the thumb, with the outer layer of skin torn or removed. X-rays performed following the incident. Completed radiology report confirmed no fractures. Possible ligament or soft-tissue injury communicated by medical personnel- extent not yet confirmed. Wound treated with ointment and a dressing. Supporting Documentation The following documentation is available upon request: Photographs of the childs injury. Photographs of the vacuum and its underside. Product identification and serial number. Medical records and completed radiology report. Additional information relevant to the incident.

Made Oct 24, 2025, sent to the company Nov 4, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025

The product, in the report: Upright bagless vacuum cleaner marketed as lightweight and multi-floor. It is black and gray with orange trim and a clear dust canister. The model is sold for home use and advertised as suitable for carpets and hard floors. The unit includes a detachable hose and long black power cord. Purchased new in box from Home Depot.

I purchased a brand-new Eureka PowerSpeed vacuum cleaner from Home Depot in Corona, California. When I plugged it in for the first time, the power cord immediately sparked, shredded, and electrocuted me. I felt burning and itching sensations in my entire body.I went to [REDACTED] Emergency Department on the same day (10/23/2025), where the doctor diagnosed me with an electrical injury. The vacuum and its cord are still in their original condition and clearly show exposed wiring. I believe this product is unsafe and could seriously harm others.

The product, in the report: Vacuum. Brand Eureka. Model, Flash

I purchased this vacuum from Walmart 1/22/2022. It has worked well. 7/30/24 my son plugged it in to use and lots of smoke came out near the switch before he turned the machine on. [REDACTED] unplugged it and put it outside, was afraid of fire and the fumes were horrible.

My concern is that I have 2 of these vacuums. Will the other be likely to catch fire?

Is there a recall on these machines?

I have taken the handle apart and have pictures of the damaged parts. If that can help in anyway please let me know.

My wife was using a Eureka stick vacuum when it began to emit smoke from the filter cover. Flames became visible through the plastic housing around the motor. She handed it to me in a panic as I told her to unplug it. I brought it outside because of the smoke, smell, and fear that it would continue to burn.

The product, in the report: Eureka Airspeed Rewind Pet Upright Vacuum

On 7/14/13, the first time I was using my brand new Eureka pet vacuum right out of the box, I had selected the “tools” option and was using the hose with the attachment to vacuum unwanted pet hairs from the corners of the walls. I heard my 14 month old son screaming, who was approximately 1 - 1.5 feet away from me, and when I turned around, he was on the floor with the tower which had also fallen over, however his foot was caught up inside the vacuum. I am still shocked that it was continuing to spin and motor, being I had selected “tools” and the hose has a 12 foot extension on it. How can an everyday household vacuum be as dangerous as an unattended power tool?

The bottom of my 1 year old son’s right big toe looked like shredded lettuce. He saw his pediatrician three times that week (who said it was one of the ugliest injuries he had seen), and on day 5 of the injury, in which it was STILL bleeding (it bled for SEVEN days total), our pediatrician referred us to see a plastic surgeon immediately. We opted out of a skin graph, and then followed up with the plastic surgeon for two additional visits (so 3 visits with the pediatrician and 3 visits with the plastic surgeon). I have photographs, doctor records, co-pay receipts, etc to validate my cause.

We are fortunate that the vacuum was brand new and clean, in which we avoided a bacterial infection. He was not allowed to wear shoes, or go in the water, for 2 weeks, to avoid the risk of contracting any other infections. ). It is 4 weeks later and his toe is healing beautifully, although not 100%, and we are at the stage of applying Vitamin E oil on it to help with the scarring and skin repair.

As a consumer, I am appalled that the safety shut-off is NOT an industry standard, AND that there was NOT any warning on the vacuum, or anywhere in the paperwork, to caution walking away from the upright tower (while using the tools selection). My [REDACTED] vacuum DOES have this safety feature so I am perplexed as to why they all don’t? I am going to petition and move forward doing EVERYTHING that I can do make this an industry standard for ALL vacuum cleaners. It would cost the manufacturers approximately $2/vacuum to put this in place. As far as I’m concerned, this is the same thing as using an electrical sander with my children in the room, and then walking away 12 feet (the length of the hose) to turn on an electrical saw. Please make the right choice for the consumers and make this an industry standard! A small cost for the good of the people.

The product, in the report: Eureka Air Speed 13 Amp Vacuum Cleaner Black and Yellow in color.

We purchased the Eureka Air Speed 13 amp vacuum cleaner (Model AS1000, Type A, Serial # UU321219000949) at Walmart on August 11th of 2012. After approximately 4 uses significant wear began to show on the vacuum cleaner’s power cord. The rubber coating on the outside of the cord appeared to have been damaged by the vacuum cleaner when it was accidentally run over. In 3-4 spots on the cord the entire protective outer sheathing of the wire was gone exposing the smaller inner wires. On 3-4 other spots the rubber outer protective sheathing on the wire showed significant wear/chaffing. This is an electricution hazard for consumers. The outer sheathing of the wire is not durable enough and should not be that easily damaged when it is incidentally run over by the vacuum. The wire appears to have a material flaw. This is a very popular vacuum used by many consumers. Some one could be seriously injured or killed if this problem is not addressed promptly.

The product, in the report: Vacuum Cleaner Eureka AirSpeed AS1000A upright Vacuum

Purchased a Eureka AS1000A Upright vacuum cleaner from Walmart.

After less than a week of using the vacuum, I tried to use attachments, and attempted to lift the vacuum to get wand to higher area to use on top of chair and drapes. The vacuum was extremely hot to the touch around the bottom front, and when I lifted it a bit to reach the higher area, the bottom of the vacuum burned a hole in my upholstery. I filed a complain with Eureka/Electrolux customer service and was told that the following Warning is in product manual:

    • Do not place vacuum cleaner on furniture or stairs as the brush roll may cause damage. Use extra care when cleaning stairs. Place vacuum cleaner on floor with the handle in storage position while using attachments.

This is very helpful information. However, having a product that can easily burn your skin and furniture poses a hazard and danger. This is not acceptable, and a product recall should be considered. Elderly individuals and children can be easily burned by this vacuum.

Company claims that I did not use it as intended/recommended. A child putting through their head through crib slats that are too wide, is also unintended use.

I would like the CPSC to look into this particular product to ensure all precautions are in place to avoid injury to children and others due to the design flaw of the spinning brush continuing to spin and getting extremely hot while using attachments.

I have an Eureka Vacuum model 4870GZ upright, while using the unit the on and off switch caught fire, melting the electric wire. I reported it to Eureka and they told me that the vacuum was out of warranty. I did not call them for the warranty but to warn them about the hazard with the switch, thank god I didn’t put it back in my closet as the wire was smoldering, it could have caught my house on fire or even shocked an burned me. The company could care less and said basically oh well. I am concerned for others if this model switch is still being used in their other products. I have pictures and even sent the pictures to the company. Something needs to be done to protect the consumers using this product or any product with this faulty switch.

The product, in the report: Eureka model AS1000A UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER Serial number: UU321109005638 PURCHASED AT WAL-MART

I purchased a Eureka brand upright vacuum, model AS1000A. Issues are as follows:

    1. Regardless of carpet height setting on the vacuum, the brush continues to spin, even when using the hose with attachments in “Tool” mode. As all other vacuum cleaners I have purchased have an automatic brush shut off feature when switching to use hose and cleaning tools, I assumed this vacuum would do the same. It does not, and there is no warning regarding this in the user manual. I fortunately noticed a burning smell while cleaning upholstery, and looked at the vacuum cleaner to find the cord underneath the beater brush. Had I been a minute longer, it would have burned through to the bare wire. The insulation was burned almost completely through. I called customer service and was told that, to help avoid the issue, I should change the height adjustment on the vacuum cleaner to “High Carpet”. To make that change, you have to unlock (tilt the handle down) first, or the brush height will not change. I didn’t know that, but it isn’t in the owners manual either. Regardless, if I’m vacuuming high carpet (which I am) and the same situation presents itself, the brush still turns, and the potential for a burnt cord is still there, so the customer service persons “fix” is useless.

When reading the owners manual on how to use accessories on page 5, the first thing you read at the top of the page says: “How to use Accessories” ! “Handle must be in the upright position” The next line: “ Before Using Accessories” 1. Raise Height Adjustment to “High Carpet”. 2. Turn Air Path Selector Knob to “Tools”. **Notice the instruction to “tilt the handle back first” is not in the instructions**

If another consumer didn’t know this (to tilt the handle back first), and followed those instructions to the letter, the height adjustment would not change. If the same situation that happened to me (3 times now) happened to them, they would suffer the same result or worse.

In my opinion, Eureka should recall these vacuum cleaners because there is a serious potential electrical safety hazard. I consider myself to be a fairly safety conscious person, and understand the importance of not running over a vacuum cord while vacuuming a carpet or floor. But if I’m using an attachment hose, and looking up while vacuuming drapes, or the back of a couch, or whatever, I shouldn’t have to worry that if I accidentally pull the hose too hard, it could cause the vacuum cleaner to turn, and provide opportunity for the constantly spinning brush to come in contact with the cord.

The product, in the report: Eureka Upright Vacum

Have a Eureka Upright Vacum Model# 5892 S# 0504024098. Several years ago while using this unit the handle would get very hot. It finally just stopped working. I took the handle apart and noticed the switch in the handle was bunt. I went to a vacum repair place and bought a replacement switch. One year later the same thing happened again, the handle would get hot (around the switch), but this time smoke came out off the handle and the vacum would not shut off with the switch. Had to umplug from the wall. If I had not unpluged from the wall,Ibelieve the vacaum would have caught fire. Not safe!!!

The consumer says that the vacuum was in use when it suddenly stopped. The handle was hot too the touch. He noticed considerable amount of smoke so he unplugged it. It continued to smoke so he took it outside. He opened up the unit and he saw where the switch melted the wiring and the rest of the body of it. The consumer contacted the manufacturer who is sending him a new switch.

The product, in the report: Eureka Boss Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless with dust wand.

I was using an Eureka Boss Upright vacuum cleaner, model # 5902BVZ, and noticed that the handle near the switch was getting progressively warmer. As I finished up the vacuuming it was down right hot to the touch and in switching it off it sparked from within the handle at the switch. When I tried to turn it back on to trouble shoot the problem it would spark and the power to the vacuum would cut in and out without the rocker switch moving sparking each time.

When I opened up the handle after I let it cool the wiring had melted through its insulation in 2 wires and the slide on “quick connect” connectors attached to the 3 way switch was charred. The handle was also melted where the wires were touching the inside plastic of the handle.

As well as being charred in the connectors, the wire going into the connectors on two wires were also frayed and there was a pale greenish looking residue on the metal of the wires, like the metal was corroded which was also evident on the inside wall of the wire’s insulation.

I don’t know if it’s the wire’s fault(improper gauge, low quality), the switches fault causing the wires to over heat or the connectors. Reading online I’ve come across many experiencing the same exact problem but all having different theories as to the culprit.

I see this as a large hazard and a design flaw more than a “wear and tear” issue and Eureka should address this issue.

We have a Eureka vacuum cleaner model 4870RZ. The wires for the on-off switch melted together and heat damaged some of the surrounding insulation. Fortunately there was no fire - we simply had to unplug the vacuum to turn it off.

The product, in the report: Eureka Model 4870 upright vacuum cleaner, teal blue

Was performing routing maintenance (belt replacment) on my Eureka 4870K vacuum s/n UU110827045860. Noticed power switch was not always working (stuck on or off). I removed the housing and discovered the crimp lugs on the power switch showed evidence of overheating (blackened, melting). Further the insulation on the wiring was melted back. Noted the plastic housing was sligtly melted inside in the vicinity of the switch. Also the exposed copper wire was oxidized. Replaced one crimp lug. This is a safety defect. Either manufacturing (crimp not applied correctly, oxidation on wire prior to crimping) or a design defect (incorrectly sized wire, incorrect crimp lug). Mfr of crimp lug is TYCO, AMP p/n 2-520129-2, which is designed for 18-22 ga wire. Note 18 ga wire is marginally sized (depending on the reference document consulted) for 12 amp (rating on apppliance) for motors (surge currents common), especially when PVC insulation (low melting point, flammable, toxic smoke) is used.
