The product, in the report: Central Machinery 5-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum/Blower, Item # 61317
My client purchased a Central Machinery, 5 gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum/Blower from Harbor Freight in October, 2016. The label describes it as a 120 volt, 8.3 amp, 60hz model, item number 61317.
Her daughter used the vacuum without incident for about fifteen minutes on September 22, 2019. My client then plugged the vacuum in at another location in the same house, and it began to make a strange noise. She could feel there was no suction at the end of the hose. She turned the unit off and back on a couple times. While it was on, she took hold of the handle at the top of the unit, intending to move it. At that moment, she heard a “gunshot” noise, the top separated from the motor housing, and a metal disk in the motor essentially exploded, sending bits of metal shrapnel flying in all directions.
My client suffered deep lacerations to her left hand and right leg that necessitated emergency transport to a hospital and multiple sutures.
