Emergency room Made Mar 10, 2026, sent to the company Mar 13, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 27, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a Bissell vacuum cleaner that has a detachable handheld cleaning attachment and a floor suction head used for cleaning floors. The vacuum can be used in handheld mode while the floor unit remains connected and powered. The floor portion of the vacuum contains a suction opening designed to pick up debris from the floor.
While the handheld attachment of the Bissell vacuum was being used, the floor portion of the vacuum remained on and had active suction. During this time, my babys finger was pulled into the floor suction opening, causing an injury to the finger. The injury required medical evaluation by a doctor and a plastic surgeon, and the child is currently undergoing occupational therapy to monitor healing and finger movement. The product was being used in normal household conditions when the incident occurred.

No one hurt Made Feb 27, 2026, sent to the company Mar 4, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 18, 2026
The product, in the report: Bissel turbo clean power brush pet model # 2806
Upon turning on a new Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet (Model 2806), the unit immediately sparked and caught fire in the motor/brush housing area. The fire occurred during normal operation on a standard area rug. I immediately shut off and unplugged the unit, but the heat from the fire melted and permanently burned a large section of the rug fibers. No injuries occurred, but the incident presented a significant fire hazard and caused property damage. I have contacted the manufacturer (Bissell), and they have requested the unit back for a ‘claims committee’

Fire in the motor housing of the vacuum. Upon plugging the vacuum in and within approximately 20-30 seconds of use fire was visible from the lower portion of the unit. The operator immediately ran to outlet, unplugged the unit, and called 911. The operator stated they did not cause the mechanical damage to the power cord, it did not get sucked into the vacuum, and no thermal activity is observed in the area of the damage.

The product, in the report: Product: Bissell Cleanview Rewind Color: Black Model: 3675
I was electrocuted while using my vacuum on my living room carpet. I only realized as I noticed a burning sensation near my silver bracelet. I have burn marks, blistering, and redness on my hand. While I was wearing the bracelet, I noticed it felt hot, then immediately, it started to sting and burn. I quickly turned the vacuum off, then I removed the bracelet as quickly as I could. Upon examining the bracelet, I noticed areas where it melted onto my skin.

The product, in the report: BISSELL Cleanview Swivel Rewind Pet vacuum
The BISSELL Cleanview Swivel Rewind Pet vacuum is seriously flawed. The hose for the upholstery tools is located on the back of the product. Each and Everytime I extend the extendable hose this unit falls and most of the time hits me. I did contact BISSELL twice and said that this unit is designed poorly and it has hit me numerous times. They did not seem to care.

The product, in the report: BISSELL MultiClean Allergen Rewind Pet Vacuum with HEPA Filter Sealed System, Automatic Cord Rewind, Tangle-free Brush Roll, & LED Headlights, 3402
I (66 year old man) was using a Bissell model 3409 vacuum cleaner to vacuum carpet when I tripped over the power cord, fell on the vacuum cleaner, and wound up with a bloody nose, swelled lip, and a scratch on the side of my nose. And broke the clip that holds the carpet tool. I’ve used vacuum cleaners for 50 years and this is my first vacuum cleaner related injury. In order to reduce the chance of injury, you must maintain a death grip on the handle with your left hand while using your right hand to hold the power cord up and out of the way. The power cord’s low exit from the vacuum cleaner and the cord’s extreme flexibility make it especially dangerous.

The product, in the report: Bissell cordless vacuum with a 22v lithium-ion battery. Bissell Pet Icon Model 22889. S/N: 2032901157FXB.
This incident occurred on March 3, 2024 when using the Bissell Pet Icon Model 22889. The incident was then reported to Bissell customer service on March 4, 2024. This email documentation with pictures of the vacuum was provided on March 11, 2024 at the request of Bissell customer care. When using the vacuum, the unit started to produce a burning smell and smoke was visible. The vacuum then turned off and would not turn back. The decision was made to take the vacuum outside as there was a risk of fire. The vacuum was excessively warm/ hot the touch on the back cover. The back was removed to ensure that there was no fire or continued treat of fire. The following was found the vacuum had experienced an internal thermal event resulting in the wire and battery plug melting and fusing together. The battery pack was not disconnected from the vacuum control board.

The product, in the report: BISSELL 2252 CleanView Swivel Upright Bagless Vacuum
What Happened: I have used this new vacuum a few times now in the week or so I have had it, and I have to say I am concerned about the safety of this product. The product in its upright position can tip over very easily and present a safety hazard; the center of gravity is not engineered properly; also, when using the “flexible” hose, the hose is so stiff that to stretch it more than a foot beyond its “at rest” state will tip the vacuum over. I have tried to stretch the hose repeatedly to make the hose more flexible and it does not help.
What Type of Product: Manufacturer: Bissell Type of Product: Vacuum Cleaner Product Name: BISSELL 2252 CleanView Swivel Upright Bagless Vacuum Model Number: 2252 Serial Number: 2311401334DLE Date Purchased: 02/23/2024 Where Purchased: Amazon.com
Who was using this product: Myself
How was the product being used: vacuuming our co-op apartment
Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using this product: No; injuries could have easily occurred with the vacuuming falling on the user or someone/pet being nearby; damage to furniture could have occurred
How did any injuries occur: not applicable
UPDATE TO REPORT ON 4/16/2024: [I wish to comment on Bissell’s response to my product safety issue as I believe it does not address the issue at hand and thus a safety issue continues to exist with the product in question.
1.) Report #: 20240313-D4051-2147340401
2a.) Bissell Response: Business Comments: BISSELL Homecare, Inc: BISSELL is committed to product safety and takes reports of incidents involving its products very seriously. This product, like all BISSELL products, meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards. Any CPSC notifications received are investigated and analyzed to ensure that there are no larger safety concerns to address. This CPSC notification was handled in this manner and a response provided to the CPSC in connection with the consumer’s report.
2b.) My response to Bissell’s Comments: The verbiage used is standard boiler-plate public relations (PR) that does not speak at all to the specifics of the issue at hand.
3.) The reasons why I think the material in Bissell’s response is inaccurate: a.) they have not addressed the design-flaw which renders the product unsafe; b.) the replacement part sent to me is of the exact same specifications as the original and thus the safety issue has not been resolved.
4.) Attached two e-mail chains or communications I have had with Bissell. As each chain is in chronological order please read each chain from the bottom to the top.
5.) As Bissell’s comment is not specific to the situation at hand and to the specifics of the complaint, the comment should be updated.
6.) If the CPSC allows such generic comments from the respondent, then the response from the company should be more specific about the issue at hand.

The product, in the report: Bissell 16501 black and green vacuum
I have pictures to show the cord is breaking. This started in 2021 and due to covid and the fact I really do not use my vacuum frequently I did not pay attention to it. 09/13/2023 I called Bissell to discuss the unsafe cord that I have children in my home and nothing is wrong with this vacuum other than the cord is breaking in multiple spots which I feel is a quality issue by the supplier. Please see pictures. I have two kids in my home and now can no longer use this device safely as it is a fire risk. I have sent my vacuum to a repair shop to see if they will replace the cord but when I spoke with them they said it is unlikely as the product is a liability and is no longer safe to use

No one hurt Made Feb 24, 2021, sent to the company Mar 11, 2021, published by CPSC Mar 25, 2021
The product, in the report: Bissell Crosswave model 1785
Purchased a Bissell Crosswave (model 1785) in Dec of 2017. Had numerous problems with 1st machine, including giving me a small, stray electric shock when touching the revolving floor brush with machine plugged in, even though the machine was turned off. Bissell replaced the 1st machine. Second machine had several slightly-different problems in addition to the same small electric shock problem and failed within 6 months of replacing the 1st machine. Over the course of our two-year warranty from Bissell they replaced the second and third machine under their warranty. Fortunately we purchased an extended warranty through [REDACTED] when we purchased the original Crosswave, so when the 4th Crosswave failed, we contacted [REDACTED], since Bissell’s two-year warranty had just expired the month before the 4th machine failed. We expected [REDACTED] to repair our Crosswave, however [REDACTED] replaced it with a different Crosswave (our FIFTH Crosswave machine, possibly “factory refurbished”, but I’m not sure of that). This morning as I was using the latest Crosswave I thought I could smell smoke, but the machine was operating normally, so I continued to use it. A few minutes later the Crosswave blew out a large puff of smoke, so I immediately shut it off. As soon as I shut it off I could hear a crackling sound coming from the lower part of the machine- the housing for the spinning floor brush. I then immediately unplugged the machine! A few minutes later after the crackling noise had stopped I removed the clear brush cover to check the spinning floor brush. Not only was the floor brush clean but it also spun freely, without any unusual resistance. In other words the floor brush was able to be spun normally. I then plugged the machine back into a GFCI outlet, which immediately tripped. I unplugged the machine, reset the GFCI outlet and tried plugging the Crosswave in again, but the GFCI outlet again tripped off immediately. It is now very obvious to me that our Crosswave would very likely have caught on FIRE if I hadn’t unplugged it! The fact that it immediately tripped a GFCI outlet indicates that there is a serious electrical problem, which I firmly believe would have eventually caused our Crosswave to ignite and burn down our home! This is not the first complaint that I have filed about these machines! I filed a similar complaint about the electric shock hazard, and had hoped to add this latest problem to that complaint, but I was unable to find it.

No incident, no one hurt Made Feb 16, 2021, sent to the company Mar 15, 2021, published by CPSC Mar 29, 2021
The product, in the report: BISSELL CleanView Upright Vacuum with OnePass Technology - 2492 https://www.target.com/p/bissell-cleanview-upright-vacuum-with-onepass-technology-2492/-/A-16469022 Dimensions (Overall): 44.5 Inches (H) x 14 Inches (W) x 13 Inches (D) Model 2492
I bought a Bissel vacuum about 2 months ago. Model number: 2492 Serial number: 2023301925e The other day, I was vacuuming and it started to smoke. I opened up the vacuum to see if the belt was in place. It appears in place but a piece of plastic inside the vacuum was burned off. I have a one bedroom apartment and use it to vacuum carpet and a smoother service in the kitchen and living room. I always change the setting when moving the vacuum between different spaces. The brush on the vacuum that spins also stopped spinning but when I opened the vacuum, it appeared fine. The vacuum is new enough that there is not anything on the brushing preventing it from spinning. I contacted Bissel and talked to them via [REDACTED] private message. They told me they could send me a replacement part or I could take it to an authorized Bissel dealer. I told them I wanted a refund and a way to return the vacuum because if it got so hot that it burned off a piece inside the unit and started to smoke, there is no guarantee that it wouldn’t happen again. They ignored my request and that is why I am here now. If it was smoking, it could easily cause a spark and cause a fire. The product was being used by me, a 30 year old male.

The product, in the report: BISSELL Cleanview Swivel Pet Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, Green, 2252: [REDACTED]
I bought a Bissell Cleanview Swivel Pet Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, Green, 2252 on Amazon on 1-4-20 and it was delivered shortly thereafter. I put it together and started using it soon after that. It worked wonderfully well at first, but within 3 or 4 uses the roller brush stopped turning and I noticed a burning smell. Upon investigation, I discovered that a mass of pet hair and other debris had collected around the motor spindle that turns the belt, which was causing the belt to slip and then to start melting from the friction caused by the spindle continuing to turn against the now stationary belt. I took it apart and cleaned it well, and used it a couple more times before it happened again. People have reported in the product’s reviews on Amazon that this design flaw- where the debris that is supposed to be channeled into the collection receptacle instead leaks into the belt housing- has caused their machines to malfunction, break, and/or catch fire. I had read some reviews on Amazon before making the purchase, but didn’t see the ones warning of this problem, which appear to number in the hundreds as of today (one of which is mine). Many have also reported difficulty trying to obtain help from Bissell and/or Amazon, although Bissell has left replies to many of the complaints that the person should call them and they will be happy to help. This product, which the manufacturer and Amazon appear to have known for at least a year poses a fire hazard under normal operation, is still on the market. Please do something about this.

Hurt, no treatment Made Apr 8, 2019, sent to the company Apr 16, 2019, published by CPSC Apr 30, 2019
The product, in the report: A vacuum made for hard floors and area rugs that dispenses pulses of cleaning solution onto a rotating terrycloth roller brush. The rotating brush washes the floor, propels debris into the mouth of the vacuum and the rotating brush also picks up most of the cleaning solution and slings it into the mouth of the vacuum where it is eventually deposited into a receiving tank which is then removed and emptied.
I purchased a Bissell Crosswave floor cleaner in December of 2017. These machines are a type of vacuum that uses a terrycloth roller brush to sweep debris into the mouth of the vacuum while dispensing short pulses of cleaning solution onto the spinning roller brush. The idea is that the spinning terrycloth roller brush will wash the floor and then pick up most of the dirty cleaning solution and sling the dirty cleaaning solution into the mouth of the vacuum where the dirty cleaning solution is eventually deposited into a receiving tank, which is eventually removed from the machine and emptied. Since buying this machine we have had to have it replaced by Bissell twice so far, and the third machine is in our dining room waiting for yet another replacement machine. Each machine has failed but for different problems. ALL THREE of these machines have a common problem, which Bissell chooses to ignore. ALL THREE of these machines have shocked me with a mild electric charge! These machines do not suck up all of the cleaning solution! They are not only not capable, but not expected to suck up all of the cleaning solution. The floor is still slightly wet. Not just damp, but wet! I have many times had to remove the front see-thru housing that encloses the floor brush to remove minor clogs; small twigs and long pine needles that the vacuum can’t pick up are common in our home. When I touch the wet terrycloth roller brush I get SHOCKED! The only way to prevent this is to unplug the machine, but I don’t think these machines should be shocking me even when it IS plugged in! The flooring that we use this machine on range from sheet vinyl, real wood flooring, and “click-lock” flooring that is 95% PVC plastic with a very thin foam rubber backing. I have been shocked in all three rooms, on all three types of flooring! The machine has shocked me when plugged into properly grounded outlets in each room, and I have even experienced being shocked when the machine was plugged into BOTH GFCI outlets! This happens in ANY outlet! This electric charge has so far not been strong enough to hurt me, but strong enough to startle me! I find it very disturbing that ALL THREE of these machines have had this same problem!

The product, in the report: Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner
Last night my wife was vacuuming the upstairs hallway carpets when the sweeper caught fire. Hearing her screams, I came out of the bedroom and saw the sweeper on fire with flames coming from underneath the sweeper. I told my wife to pull the plug from the wall outlet and the flames subsided. I blew out the remaining fire. Damage was limited to the sweeper itself but did produce enough smoke to set off the smoke detectors in our house. My wife was visibly shaken by this incident.

01/15/2016 (Approximately) - The consume indicates that he was using the vacuum cleaner’s wand and at one point, its cord became caught under the rower brush and peeled some of the rubber off. The consumer was unaware that the rower brush would stay on even if the wand was being used. The consumer taped over the peeled part of the cord.
01/26/2016 - The consumer indicates that his daughters were cleaning their room: one was using the vacuum cleaner to clean the drapes with its wand, while the other was picking things up from the floor. At one point, the vacuum cleaner’s rower brush caught the hair of the consumer’s daughter that was picking things up from the floor. The consumer’s daughter started screaming and kicking.
The consumer ran into the room and upon noticing what was going on, immediately unplugged the vacuum cleaner. His daughter’s hair was stuck and they had to cut some of it off that would not budge. The vacuum cleaner plucked some of the consumer’s daughter’s hair.
01/27/2016 - The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained what happened. The representative he spoke to informed him that that was the way the vacuum cleaner was designed and that they had never had any incidents reported like his. He was informed that they could not due anything for him.
The retailer where his unit was purchased at closed down and so he is unable to return it.
The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard to consumers.

The product, in the report: Bissell Spotbot Pet series, carpet cleaning robot
I acquired a Bissell Spot Bot Pet Series carpet cleaner approximately 2 months ago, and have been using it regularly since its purchase, new. Last evening, I put the appliance into use, as intended, and within a minute began to smell smoke. I disconnected the unit from the power outlet, and examined it at which time more smoke began to emanate from the unit. Fortunately, the unit was supervised on this occasion, and there was no loss besides the burned up motor and electrical components of the device. I am concerned about the product’s fire safety since it is intended to be used on the carpet of a home.

The product, in the report: BISSELL 10M2 ZING BAGLESS CANISTER VACUUM CLEANER
I was using a Bissell 10M2 ZING vacuum cleaner when it started making a bad smell, like burning rubber. The cleaner started making a whining noise so I turned it off. I waited a few minutes and turned it back on.
The rubber smell came back, so this time I took the exhaust port filter off and saw the ORANGE SPARKS were shooting out of the back. The smell came back and the vacuum started to smoke and I could smell electrical burning.
The vacuum cleaner was purchased by me, brand new, from Amazon on January 8, 2012. I went back to the Amazon web page and saw that other people were reporting the exact same thing, rubber smell, sparks and then fire.

In March of 2013, I purchased a Bissell Vacuum cleaner heppa filter type. I used it a few times, then all of the sudden I started getting shocked from it. My cousin [REDACTED] tried the Vacuum and did the same to him. I took it back to Walmart on Friday May 17th.,2013. Because I did not have a receipt, only the box, I had to get one as the same price or more. The price was $69.99 for the first vacuum. So I upgraded to a ten dollar more Bissell vacuum that has the [REDACTED] filter and push button for the cord to go in. Got it home put it together, the same thing happen. Got shocked again. So I borrowed my sisters [REDACTED] vacuum cleaner today and used it. Did not get shocked.

The product, in the report: Bissell Powergroom Multi Cyclonic Vacuum Upright vacuum with hose and attachments.
We purchased a Bissell Model 92l3-W vacuum cleaner and whenever you use the hose attachment the vacuum falls over. I was not overextending any of the times and it has hit me in the head, the arm 2 times and this final time fell on my dog who was asleep on the couch. I contacted Bissell and they maintained I had to be overextending the hose but it is so tight it is impossible to extend at all. The first time I was sitting on the floor doing the case boards and it was less than 1 foot away from me and as I bent my body over it fell on top of me and hit me in the head and hurt very badly. It is like if you turn or make any movement with the hose extended the top is so top heavy and the bottom of the vacuum so light it will fall over. The last time I was right by my dog who was on the couch and I has using the house attachments to clean beside the couch and it fell on top of him. He was shaken up all night long and went to the vet the next day. No obvious injury but now one dog who completely freaks when he sees a vacuum. I will never use this vacuum again and Bissell refused to do anything about it so I guess we are looking for another vacuum. My hope is that this piece of junk gets taken off the market before someone, human or pet, gets seriously injured.
