Complaint: Sale of Product Labeled ‘Not for Human Consumption’ in Retail Stores

I am writing to bring to your attention a concerning issue regarding the sale of a product labeled as ‘Not for human consumption’ in retail stores, which appears to contradict its intended purpose and raises serious consumer safety concerns.

On January 11th, 2025, I purchased a product called ‘YRS PAN CHUTNEY’ from India Bazaar in Chantilly, Virginia. Upon closer inspection of the packaging, I noticed that it prominently states “Not for human consumption” and provides no list of ingredients or nutritional information.

This is alarming because the product is being sold openly in the food section of the store, and the term ‘pan chutney’ clearly suggests it is meant to be consumed. I also observed that similar products are commonly available in many Indian/Asian grocery stores, further compounding the potential risk to consumers who may unknowingly purchase and consume such items.

As a consumer, I find this practice misleading and potentially dangerous. The lack of clear ingredient labeling and the contradictory message on the packaging can lead to serious health risks, especially since buyers may assume it is safe for consumption based on its placement in the store and its product name.

I request the FTC to investigate this issue and take appropriate action to ensure consumer safety. It is crucial that such products are either removed from shelves or made compliant with labeling and safety standards.

If further details or documentation are required, I would be happy to provide additional information. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
