  1. No one hurt

Made May 21, 2024, sent to the company May 30, 2024, published by CPSC Jun 13, 2024

The product, in the report: All Chinese crate covers that are sold on Amazon are made of PVC. They claim they are breathable, but we tested the material and there is zero air flow.

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the sale of non-breathable Polyvinyl Chloride dog crate covers sold on Amazon by several Chinese companies making false claims that their crate covers are breathable. My company, [REDACTED], has been making crate covers since 1999. After reading horrific reviews on the lack of breathability resulting in overheated dogs and numerous adults complaining of toxic smells causing headaches, my company purchased dog crate covers on Amazon from 3 different Chinese companies. After much research, it was determined that the ASTM D-737 would be the best test to measure the Air Flow and Breathability of these crate covers. [REDACTED] hired an accredited lab ISO 17025 to test our dog crate cover and 3 Chinese crate covers that are coated with PVC. The ASTM D-737 test results show the Chinese crate covers had zero air permeability. I urge you to take immediate action to ban PVC Coated dog crate covers due to the following Health Risks:

    1. PVC Coated Material is not breathable and does not provide the proper amount of oxygen for our dogs basic needs. When material is coated in PVC, no oxygen can pass through. Everyday thousands of dogs are kept in pvc covered crates forced to breathe toxic chemicals in a low oxygen environment. Not only are non-breathable crate covers extremely dangerous for dogs but families with small children are the largest demographic of dog owners therefore if adults are getting headaches from the toxic smells of the pvc imagine what these chemicals are doing to the children and pets in the homes. Please read the attached reviews, many dog owners mention their dog crying in the crate due to the lack of breathability, dogs panting and wet bedding from overheating, several mention condensation and mildew on the inside of the crate covers and even dogs getting skin irritations.

    2. Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, is a major source of phthalates that are known endocrine disruptors that can cause skin irritation and cancer. They were banned from children’s toys and should be banned from pet bedding and pet toys. Children and pets are particularly vulnerable to the effects of phthalates because of their body weight. Much like humans, our pet’s skin is permeable and will absorb harmful chemicals it comes into contact with. PVC is carcinogenic if inhaled or eaten. Dog crates are used to train puppies and contain older dogs. Crate Covers are part of the crate bedding and provides den like privacy. However, dogs should not be enclosed with these PVC coated covers and forced to breathe toxic chemicals in a low oxygen environment. Puppies and young dogs are teething when they are crate training, chewing on material is common. It is not safe to ingest pvc coated materials and when they lick their paws and their body, the chemicals are absorbed faster. According to The Veterinary Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death in 47% of dogs.

    3. Chinese sellers on Amazon claim that their dog crate covers are Well Ventilated, breathable, Made of harmless high-quality materials to bring comfort and safety to pets, The ventilation design not only provides private space for your dogs, but also prevents them felling anxious from stuffiness, provides good breathability are all examples of their false claims. The certified test results on all 3 Chinese crate covers showed 0 air permeability.

    4. Labeling- None of the 3 Chinese crate covers had a fabric content label which should be a violation of The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. It is obvious that these crate covers are all coated with pvc however only 1 of 3 covers had a CA Prop 65 chemical warning label affixed to the product. One of the Chinese companies, [REDACTED] had no labels not even a Country-of-Origin label or Manufacturer name and place of business affixed in a permanent fashion as required by US Customs. Amazon should share in the responsibility of labeling just as most large retailers do. Just like children, pets are extremely vulnerable and must be protected. Phthalates in pet products including beds, crate covers, and toys should be banned for the health and safety of our furry children that have no voice. [REDACTED] has been designing pet bedding since 1999. All our products are made with pet-friendly materials. Our factory is certified by OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Our products were tested and passed CA Prop 65 test and CPSC Lead and Cadmium. We prioritize the health and well-being of our pets over profitability.

I hope you will take immediate action to ban the sale of PVC dog crate covers on Amazon and PVC in all dog products.
