How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 2 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Mainstay Glass Canning Jars, pints and quarts

Several complaints regarding “Mainstay Canning Jars” sold through Wal-Mart that break during tempering and processing. Lids also have crimp in them which does not allow proper processing and sealing causing product in jars to spoil

The product, in the report: Mainstays Canning Lids

I made jelly and pickles using Mainstays canning lids from Walmart. The jelly did not seal. I reprocessed it with new lids. It did not seal. I reprocessed with [REDACTED] canning lids. It sealed. The lids on the pickles looked uneven and bent in places. When I opened the jar, they were only slightly sealed. I threw them out.

Botulism kills people who eat improperly canned food. I returned the unused lids to Walmart and asked that they take the Mainstays off the shelf. The manager said that they are not responsible for manufacturer defects. They only sell the products and that I could address my concerns to the manufacturer.

When I search for Mainstays online, I am directed to Walmart products. I have not been able to find a separate manufacturer. I did write my concerns to Walmart. In the meantime, I do not feel that these canning lids are safe for people to use.
