The product, in the report: Large clear glass food storage jar with a glass clamp top lid, metal clamp mechanism, and silicone sealing gasket. Mason Craft and More Airtight Glass Jumbo Clamp Jar with Lid. Capacity is 4.5 liters or 152 oz. The jar is designed for storing dry food and snacks and is advertised as having an airtight clamp lid with a silicone gasket.
I am reporting a serious safety concern involving a Mason Craft and More large glass clamp top storage jar, approximately 152 oz. I use the jar in my home to store my dogs treats.
I was the person using the product. I was using it normally by opening and closing the clamp lid to take treats out for my dog. The jar was not dropped, forced, or misused.
I closed the clamp lid normally and did not realize anything had broken. I later opened the jar and gave my dog a treat. When I opened the jar again afterward, I noticed that a piece of the glass lid had chipped off beside the metal clamp mechanism. I then discovered that broken glass had fallen into the dog treats inside the jar.
The jar is fairly new. The silicone gasket is clean and appears to be in very good condition, with no visible cracking, discoloration, dryness, or deterioration.
Because I had already given my dog a treat before discovering the broken glass, I cannot rule out the possibility that he may have ingested a small glass fragment. At this time he is not showing any symptoms, and I do not know whether he actually swallowed glass.
The potential injury would have occurred from my dog eating a treat that may have been contaminated with a glass fragment from the chipped lid.
I am concerned that the clamp mechanism may be putting excessive or uneven pressure on the glass lid during normal use, creating a breakage and ingestion hazard. I have photographs showing the chipped area of the glass lid, the metal clamp, the silicone gasket, and the treats inside the jar. I have preserved the jar and remaining contents.
