The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. First aid

The product, in the report: 750 ml. bottle of olive oil, green glass with metal twist off screw top. It is marked Destination Series, EVOO, Everyday.

Trying to open a bottle of California Olive Ranch Destination Series Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 750 ml glass bottle. It is sealed with a twist off metal top with a serrated ring at the bottom. It did not separate from the top, so it was twisting round and round but not unscrewing. I tried a knife under the edge. No traction. So i got a 4” flat-headed screwdriver and got it under the bottom edge and broke off a piece. I took the piece in my hand to continue ripping it off and it sliced through my thumb. I continued to take off the attached bottom rim link by link using the screwdriver as leverage and was able to open the olive oil. In the meantime my thumb started bleeding. Somehow in the process i managed to slice my left thumb too, but it didn’t bleed. My right thumb bled solidly for an hour and off and on until i went to bed last night. This morning, it had opened and started bleeding during the night.

This kind of dangerous packaging should be withdrawn from the market.
