The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: CamelBak Eddy+ Kids 12 oz Bottle, Insulated Stainless Steel with Straw Cap - Leak Proof When Closed,Biking Dogs Amazon’s Choice

My toddler was able to fit her finger in to the straw of her children’s camelbak, cutting off circulation. The no-spill mechanism design of the straw, made it impossible for her to pull it out. We want to make sure this does not happen to anyone else.

UPDATED ON 4/5/2023: [When I originally submitted my report on 4/1/23, we had not taken my daughter to see a doctor and just administered first aid at home. After the first 24 hrs, the injured finger continued to swell and we have since sought care from two different doctors — 1/ was her primary care doctor seen 4/3 who had never seen an injury such as this so referred us to a specialist, and 2/ was a hand specialist at [REDACTED] Children’s hospital who was seen on 4/4. My child was very lucky to have not lost her finger, and I will reiterate that this product poses a great risk to other children as there is an inherent design flaw in the stop flow mechanism of the straw. It essentially acts as a finger trap meaning once the child sticks their finger in it, the flaps on the straw make it impossible for a young child to pull it out. Attaching additional photos of the injury that were not originally submitted with the case, plus photos of the straw with an adult finger inserted including the referenced flaps. ]

The product, in the report: Camelbak Podium Water Bottle, current recall but not this date code which had same problem.

This concerns the existing Camelbak Podium water bottle recall, but happened with a different date code than is recalled. One cap with a date code not in the recall lost it’s silicone piece. I am not sure where it went, don’t think I swallowed it. I have 7 of these bottles. None of the other Podiums are in the recall and neither was the one that failed.

The product, in the report: Insulated drinking bottle

Quoted is an email to the Camelbak Corporation.

Gentlemen, attached are pictures of Camelbak insulated bottles. My wife has been using the blue one with the blue tip for years. We wash it out daily with hot soapy water with bleach in it. We take it apart and wash the container, the straw and the top. We have not taken the tip off the top since it didn’t appear possible to disassemble. Today she got a mouthful of llarge black flakes that looked very unhealthy. I examined the container and straw and they were clean. I then pulled off the blue tip and it was clean. However the ring the blue tip sits on was black. I got out my brush for cleaning Camelbak tubing and inserted it into the orofice in the ring and ran it through to the tip that fits into the straw. The brush came out heavily caked with black mold.

I notice that the green isulated bottle has a clear rubber tiip. We seldom use this one and it did not have this same problem. However if your products come with a clear tip this would help the users notice a similar buildup and recognize the need to clean it. I suggest the you issue a product recall and substitute clear tips for all the blue ones. In addition I suggest that you issue instructions to users about this issue.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter. This makes me wonder about your other products with blue tips.
