Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: The product is a Rubbermaid brand plastic bowl/storage container. The bowl is square in shape and clear in color about quart sized with a snap on red lid. It came in a package with various sized matching bowls. I do not know the model or UPC code.

I was heating up a bowl of water, uncovered, in the microwave using a Rubbermaid brand container. After heating for about 2 minutes I heard a pop or explosion. The microwave door was flung open and hot water was splashed on the floor, stove, and countertop. There were no injuries but had someone been in front of or near the microwave they could have been scalded with hot water. I believe the incident may have been caused by the design of the bowl base. The base has a rim or “lip” that goes around the entire base with an indention inside the rim. The outside of the bowl was wet and as the bowl was heated the rim may have trapped the steam pressure until the bowl “exploded” and overturned. This theory developed because I have since noticed all the other plastic bowls in the kitchen have slits or openings in rim at the base, perhaps to let the steam escape? I hope this report helps to prevent injuries in the future.
