  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Jul 7, 2026, sent to the company Jul 10, 2026, published by CPSC Jul 24, 2026

The product, in the report: Ortho Weed B-gon Lawn Weed Killer Ready-to-Spray, 32 fl oz. Approximately 11 in tall by 2.25 in wide. Packaging has a garden hose connection and a white flow control lever on the top, which is easily pushed with your thumb.

I purchased the Ortho Weed B-gon Lawn Weed Killer + Crabgrass Control Ready to Spray in the 32 fl oz container from Home Depot. This package is designed so that you hook up the garden hose to it, push the flow control lever on top and the water mixes with liquid herbicide concentrate as you spray the lawn. I set the container on the floor carpet in the back seat area of my truck. A half hour later I noticed a strong chemical smell when I opened up the door of my truck. I grabbed the bottle by the neck, and my fingers were covered with the herbicide concentrate. Approximately 2/3 of the container had leaked out into the carpeting. The flow control lever on the top has three positions: Off, Water and On. The lever was in the “Water” position and would have been in this position when I purchased the product. Further inspection revealed that in addition to leaking profusely in the “Water” position, it also leaks out in the “On” position. There is no mechanism that prevents this lever from being inadvertently positioned in the “Water” or “On” position and leaking concentrated herbicide if tipped over. The container is quite narrow in relation to its height and tips easily. I went back to the store and all the bottles of this product were the same: No mechanism to keep the lever in the “Off” position. A competing brand has a different package design that requires the end-user to remove a piece of plastic to prevent the flow control lever from being moved from the “Off position. During the carpet cleanup process, I was exposed to the fumes of the concentrate herbicide for several hours.
