Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

  1. First aid

The product, in the report: Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers packaged meal (10X10)

On February 20th I microwaved a Healthy Choice Cafe Steamer for the time recommended on the package. When it was done I removed it from the microwave and as I carried it over to remove the insert or tray it touched the inside of my arm by my wrist causing a 2nd degree burn. This happened in a matter of seconds. It is painful and took several weeks to heal. This product should never get so hot that it causes permanent scaring as it did to me.

The product, in the report: Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers Barbeque Seasoned Steak with Potatoes

I was cooking a “Cafe Steamers” microwave dinner by HEALTH CHOICE and reached into the microwave to retrieve the product. As my hand approached the bowl, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE TAB USED TO PULL BACK THE COVERING, steam escaped from under the film and LITERALLY BLISTERED THE TOP OF MY POINTER FINGER. I did not even TOUCH the bowl! The warning on the back of the packaging states: 2. STIR steamed food into sauce bowl. CAREFUL, IT’S HOT!

I had not even touched the bowl to pull it out of the microwave, let alone get it out to pour it into the sauce bowl!

I did take pictures of my finger and the blisters.

Made Aug 6, 2017, sent to the company Aug 14, 2017, published by CPSC Aug 28, 2017

The product, in the report: Healthy Choice Simply Steamers frozen meal (Grilled Basil Chicken)

Healthy Choice Simply Steamers frozen meal contained sharp plastic shards. Edge of plastic bowl was cracked. However, a review of the broken edge revealed that potentially a small piece of plastic, less than 3/16” in diameter, appeared to be missing. The shards contained in the frozen meal were much larger and different in shape than the potential missing piece. If ingested, the shards could cause puncture wounds in the mouth, or worse yet, a puncture in any portion of the digestive tract. The issue has been reported to the parent company, ConAgra, via their website. For me, this is the second occurrence of this issue with the same frozen meal entre. I always take care to buy products whose outer container shows no signs of damage. When the first issue was noted, I simply assumed that the broken plastic resulted from rough handling even though there was no indication of damage on the outer packaging. However, the second occurrence indicates that the bowls are likely being damaged during processing since the shards were obviously not from the cracked edge of this specific bowl. My background includes over 3 decades of failure investigation so I don’t make this accusation lightly. Digital photos are available of the bowl, plastic shards, and outer packaging manufacturing code.
