  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made May 9, 2017, sent to the company May 17, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 8, 2017

The product, in the report: 16.9 oz plastic water bottle (Arrowhead) bar code is 71142 00050 bottle’s label is: 43772443

This was a manufacturing defect on the base of the twist off cap. It was a standard 16.9 oz plastic bottle filled with Arrowhead Water (Nestle is the parent company). When I opened the bottle by twisting the top of the cap, a sharp protrusion at the base of the plastic cap (that which remains on the bottle), sliced open my thumb about a half-inch. I just opened it in the standard fashion - just twisting it as usual. I usually drink bottled water on a regular basis - probably 5-6 bottles a day - for the past 30 years or so...not exclusively Arrowhead, and this is the third time in the past 5 years that I have had a similar occurrence, and all have been on Arrowhead bottles. It’s the same small piece of protruding plastic that has cut me. I still have the bottle and the sharp point, although small, is certainly large enough to cause the damage in each of the 3 injuries. Now the cut to my left thumb was not severe, but t bleed for awhile, and I simply placed a bandage on it - I never required medical assistance on any of the 3 injuries. I kept to bandaged for a week ( the pain was somewhat considerable, but the bandage controlled it. I called up Arrowhead, and they told me that they could only offer me $5 for my pain and suffering...really both inadequate and insulting. They gave me a case number: [REDACTED] Here’s the thing: I didn’t report this to anyone because it wasn’t a major injury (but it happened 3 times over about 5 years)...but it has no doubt happened to untold numbers of consumers over the years (with very few reporting it to you)..but it is a real problem, and I felt that I should be a good citizen and alert you folks as to what is should be considered a very painful, and moderately serious problem that has existed for a considerable period of time. Hopefully, your department can do something about this product defect and the quality control associated with it. Many thanks.
