No one hurt Made Apr 5, 2022, sent to the company May 5, 2022, published by CPSC May 19, 2022
The product, in the report: Pot pie and container
Caller stated that he placed the pot pie in the microwave and it started smoking after being in there for 2 mins he was able to remove it before any damages to his microwave. He stated that this is the second incident, the first incident happened in June or July 2021 which destroyed the microwave and he had to replace the unit. Caller stated that this incident caused smoke to engulf the room. He stated that there was smoke damages to his wall.
Caller stated that he does not know if the container or the food content caused the incident.
Following is a history of these 2 incidents in which a Marie Callender Turkey Pot Pie began to smoke and burn in my microwave.
Date: June/July 2021 In the 1st incident, I took the pot pie from my freezer, read the instructions and put it in my microwave. I programmed the microwave for 5-6 minutes per the box instructions (I believe). I went into the adjoining living room to watch TV and a few minutes later smelled smoke. I went into the kitchen and it was filled with smoke and smoke was pouring from the microwave. I opened the microwave and the pot pie and its container were flaming and pouring off smoke. I took the pot pie, etc. to the sink and poured water on it to ‘put it out’ and then opened all the doors and windows and turned on fans to remove the smoke from the house.
This incident made the microwave unusable because of a horrible odor in the microwave that no amount of cleaning would remove. This odor was also transmitted to any food subsequently placed into the microwave. Also, there was a dull yellow color over its entire interior. The microwave still functioned, however. I disposed of the microwave at a recycling business. Actually, I thought I had accidentally programmed too many minutes into the microwave and this was the result.
This incident left a greasy smoke film on the walls and ceiling in the kitchen and adjacent rooms (dining room, living room, hallway, utility room).
Date: 2/3/2022 An identical 2nd incident happened on this date with another Marie Callender turkey pot pie. I took the pot pie from my freezer and put it in a new 1100 watt [REDACTED] microwave (Model [REDACTED]) according to the box instructions, I programmed the microwave for 5 minutes. At 3 and ½ minutes the pot pie and box began to smoke (no flames). I removed the pot pie, etc. from the microwave and put in sink and sprayed water on it and then took it outside to cool This also filled the house with greasy smoke.
I kept the remnants of the 2nd pot pie and photographed it. The box had the following labels: 5014 10630 P1 09 09 P45 BEST IF USED BY AUG 25 2012. The bar code= 0 2113150114 3. The box for this turkey pot pie said to microwave in a 1100 watt microwave for 5- 6 minutes. Date: 2/7/2022 I called CONAGRA at 1-800-595-701 O around 8am and registered a complaint about these 2 incidents with Marie Callender turkey pot pies where both started to smoke and burn in the microwave. I talked to a [REDACTED]. I told her about these 2 incidents. She tried to get me to talk to a supervisor but none were currently available and she told me that one would call me back.
Date: 2/8/2022 I received a call from CONAGRA between 6-7am this morning. I talked with [REDACTED] who is one of the supervisors. I again told her what happened with these 2 incidents. I told her the 2nd incident happened on 2/3/2022. She asked if I could take some photos of the remains of the pot pie and box. I told her I would do this. She asked about the walls and asked if I could take some photos showing the smoke damage. I told her the walls were an off-white (beige) and I was not sure a photo would show the smoke damage on the walls/ceiling. I told her that the walls in the house will need to be professionally cleaned. I requested re-imbursement for this work.
She told me to send the photos to:
CONAGRA Brands % Consumer Care Case #= 05832189 PO Box 3768 Omaha, Nebraska 68103
Date: 4/5/2022 I called CONAGRA today at 8:05 am and spoke to a representative. I gave her my case number and told her I was calling back because I had not yet heard back from CONAGRA about the incidents I reported. She told me she could not get me a 2nd level supervisor and asked for a callback number. I gave her [REDACTED]. She told me I would get a call back sometime.
Date: 4/5/2022 I called the Consumer Product Safety Commission (800) 638-2772 at 8:12am and talked with a representative. I told her the same information I told CONAGRA and she told me she was unsure if it falls under their purview or the Food and Drug Commission BUT would take the information anyway. I gave her the information that I gave CONAGRA and my phone number and address. She told me this would be reviewed and a letter sent to me which would indicate IF this was something that is covered by this Commission. My case number is: 20220405-AFE75-3650998.
Date: 4/6/2022 CONAGRA (800-595-7010) called around 1:20pm today and told me they would not compensate me for smoke damage. etc. because it is their policy to not do so for products used AFTER their expiration date (e.g. 2012). Date: April 2022 I received a letter dated 4/6/3022 from the Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding my complaint. It asked for more details, pictures, and my permission regarding this complaint.

No one hurt Made Apr 24, 2012, sent to the company May 2, 2012, published by CPSC May 23, 2012
The product, in the report: Marie Callender’s Beef Pot Pie (frozen) 16.5 oz
I had placed a frozen beef pot pie into the microwave to be cooked. The package states to cook for 9 1/2 to 11 minutes (1100 watt oven or more). I set the timer for 9 1/2 minutes. At the nine minute mark, I saw that the package was on fire. Smoke filled the oven and a five or six inch flame was coming from the side of the package. As soon as I turned off the oven, the fire died out.
My big concern is, if I had set the timer for a longer time period and not checked the product, my house could have been burnt and someone injured. This is not due to a faulty microwave oven. It worked just fine before this incident and still works fine. It’s due to a problem with the packaging. This is the second time this has happened to me using the same product.
