  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made May 17, 2023, sent to the company May 19, 2023, published by CPSC Jun 5, 2023

The product, in the report: The product is made by “Applaws” and it is a 5.5 ounce can of cat food. The flavors I had bought were a 12 pack variety of “Tuna Fillet in Broth”, “Chicken Breast in Broth”, and “Tuna Fillet with Salmon in Broth”. The “Tuna Fillet with Salmon in Broth” can is the one where the piece you pull on, snapped off.

The small 5.5 oz canned cat food made by “Applaws,” I have been trying to open these cans, and it has been extremely difficult to open. It takes me sometimes 5-6 hard “pulls” to open it, and it opens extremely quickly and much differently than any other can of cat food I have bought. I have probably used 10 other canned foods or brands before which I have never had problems with. Most of the time, I cannot open the Applaws cans without putting my other left hand (or fingers) overtop of the metal top in a dangerous location that makes it come into contact with my skin when I open it. It has not cut me yet, but the edge did graze my skin twice now, and once I was shocked it did not cut me. I have only recently purchased this product for the first time. I am a highly coordinated 40 year-old male, and can juggle four balls, and I lift weights from time to time. I’m just implying that I don’t usually have issues like this. I never complain about products and I am not a cynical person at all. I have a positive outlook. This is not an ordinary thing that I do. I am afraid every time that I’m going to cut myself badly when I open the can for my cats. I like the product itself, as do my cats, so I had kept trying to ope it. But the last can I tried to open, the piece that you pull on just snapped off. In fairness, this has happened to me before with another company, and I am sure that it happens from time to time with any can of food for cats, etc. However, this is a much bigger concern. Every time I do open the can, (which has been about 6-8 times now) I take a sigh of relief that I didn’t slice my fingers with an extremely sharp edge and need to go to the hospital. I will not be opening another single can of this product until I discover that the product has been changed, or until an official of some sort notifies me. I am returning the rest of the cans today to the store if they allow me to do so. I don’t even feel like giving the product to an animal shelter is good because I feel like it is unsafe for anyone to open. So I will be throwing it away if I cannot return the product for my money back (I don’t have my receipt). I believe this is a pretty serious manufacturing issue. The company makes a great product, I’m so satisfied with their product! Its just unsafe to open their cans!
