The product, in the report: [REDACTED] https://shopbvv.com/collections/glass-vac-aluminum-vacuum-chambers/products/glass-vac-5-gallon-aluminum-vacuum-chamber BVV Glass Vac 5 gallon vacuum chamber. Glass lid with silicon gasket.
A Glass-Vac 5 gallon vacuum chamber (made by BVV) imploded during use, and the glass lid shattered sending glass flying. One of our technicians who was in close proximity to the vacuum chamber had glass fly into his eye and was taken to the hospital. He also experienced some hearing loss due to the implosion.
Our engineering team ran an investigation and concluded that when the lid is placed off center it can lead to an implosion when the lid slips into the stainless steel chamber. The lid is 12” in diameter, so atmospheric pressure results in over 1500 lbs of downwards force. The engineering team recreated this failure with an identical Glass-Vac 5 gallon chamber.
This product is dangerous because there is no centering feature for the lid. Further, the rubber gasket around the glass lid hides exactly where the glass sits on the stainless steel chamber rim. I contacted the company and they sent me photos of identical failures that they received from other customers, so this is not a one-off incident.
