The product, in the report: Whirlpool gas dryer. Stainless steel outer finish.

I was using our natural gas fired clothes dryer. The dryer cycle finished and dryer was “off” for about 20 minutes. However i found that the dryer’s burner was still going. In our laundry room i could smell a burning smell. I could hear the gas burner was still going even though the dryer was otherwise “off”. The drum was not spinning, all lights on the dryer were out, just like when it normally finishes a cycle. There was a burning smell. Also, the outside of the dryer on top of the dryer was extremely hot, i would estimate 80 Celcuis, too hot to touch for more than a second. I knew there was a problem but did not know what to do to fix it. I opened and closed the drum door, but the burner kept going. I turned the dryer on and off from the control screen, still i could here the burner still going. I opened and closed the drum door again. I think i slammed it closed as i was starting to panic. At that moment i heard the burner go silent. I think the gas burner valve was stuck open and the vibration from me slamming the door was enough to un-stick the valve. Had i not caught the failure at that point or had the burner not closed (i.e. became unstuck at that moment) i think a fire external to the dryer would have happened very soon. I have not had this failure before. Also after the incident as the dryer cooled back down to room temperature i also noticed an odor of burnt electrical. I have not used the dryer since. I phoned Whirlpool and told them about the incident, they offered no help other than saying they could send a technician and i would have to pay for the service. I am buying a new dryer from a different manufacturer and will be getting rid of this dryer tomorrow (12/30/2022) afternoon

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio Dryer White Gas Dryer

The product was being used to dry clothes.

    Here is what took place:

We believe there is a product safety issue with Whirlpool Cabrio Dryers. >>>> There was a Class action Lawsuit against Whirlpool, and we believe this was dismissed. Unfortunately, everything we see regarding these dryers is what happened with ours. We hope and pray you will investigate this. Since we have purchased this dryer, we have had trouble with the heating element. It just stops heating. We realize now; it stops heating because there has been a fire, and it automatically trips an internal shutoff. Unfortunately, this takes place after it smells like we have had a fire in it. We have had at least three visits to our home in the last five years to fix this dryer. The technician fixed the unit the first two times. However, this last time, it was a significant fire. When the technician pulled the inside of the dryer out, there were at least 4-5 inches of lint build-up. Lint was all over the inside of the bottom and on different parts of our dryer. There was nowhere for the lint to go. It was apparent the vent unit in the dryer never worked correctly. The way the dryer was designed did not allow for appropriate venting. We previously had an [REDACTED] dryer, and we never had issues like this before. When seeing if our outside vent was blocked, air quickly passed through our homes vent. We are concerned about this model of dryer and believe it should be immediately recalled. With this fire we could have lost our children, spouse, animals, our home, and belongings. We have a hard time understanding with so much documentation online, and with the danger of this product, why it has not been recalled yet. If you could please investigate this and consider a recall, we would appreciate it.

The product, in the report: WHIRIRLPOOL DUET DRYER

On October 21, 2018 at approximately 4:00pm I was at home with my wife [REDACTED] age 50 and my Son [REDACTED] age 8 when without warning my CO and Smoke alarms located in the basement where my furnace and Whirlpool Dryer are located sounded a warning. I immediately got my family out of the house to the safety of the next door neighbor and returned to investigate further why the alarms were warning audibly active. I observed smoke in the basement and immediately determined the Whirlpool Dryer which was not in use at the time was burnt on the inside of the drum. I disconnected the electricity to the dryer, proceeded to vent the house by opening the windows, but the CO and Smoke alarms continued to alarm. I exited my house and had my wife telephone and dispatch a service technician to inspect my Whirlpool Dryer. At approximately 5:00pm the technician named [REDACTED] arrived at my house. I informed him of what I had observed. The technician entered my house, went to the basement, and discovered that my Whirlpool Dryer had a catostaphic failure of the internal Gas Value and High temperature sensor. Gas was actively flowing into the Dryer although it was not in use. The gas was being consumed by the pilot light releasing CO as well as burning the inside Dryer drum at a very high temperature. The technician immediately shut the Gas line to the my Whirlpool Dryer. Upon further examination the technician observed the internal Gas Value to be stuck in the open position which caused CO and natural gas to flow unimpeded into my house. The technician stated,” ITS A GOOD THING YOU CALLED ME BECAUSE YOUR FAMILY COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BY THE CO, AND THE HOUSE WOULD HAVE EXPLODED IF THE GAS CONTINUED TO BUILD UP.” THe technician documented the failure on the report which states,” NEEDS NEW GAS VALUE. STAYING OPEN FIRE HAZARD.’ On October 23, 2018 I telephoned Whirlpool Customer Service at 1866-698-2538 and spoke with a representative named [REDACTED]. The representative document what had transpired and indicated she was going to transfer me to the “Safety Team” in regard to this matter and provided me with a Case # [REDACTED]. After 30 minutes on hold I spoke with a “Safety Team” representative who advised me that Whirlpool would send a Whirlpool certified technician on Thursday October 25, 2018 to examine and investigate the open Gas Value and burn in the drum of my Dryer. On October 25, 2018 a representative named [REDACTED] from [REDACTED] arrived at my house. The technician inspected the Whirlpool Dryer for approximately 5 minutes. The technician stated, THERE WAS NO REASON TO OPEN THE DRYER, HE OBSERVED THE BURN MARK IN THE DRUM AND CONCLUDED IN FACT IT WAS A INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE GAS VALUE.” The technician then informed me the technician was going to telephone the Whirlpool “Safety Team” and ask for Authorization to replace the gas value and the drum which cost $600.00. The technician went to his vehicle telephoned the “safety Team” at 1-800-253-1301 and after approximately 30 minutes came back to inform me the “Safety Team had denied authorization to make the appropriate repairs stating due to the age of the Dryer that is the reason for denial. NOTE: THE DRYER IS 8 YEARS OLD. I ten received a call from the “Whirlpool Safety Team” who indicated they would not repair the Dryer and if I wanted the Dryer repaired it would cost $600.00 dollars. I advised the representative that the solution provided was not acceptable to me. The representative stated,” She would give me 30% off the new purchase of a Dryer that’s all the representative would do. MAY I STATE MY FAMILY NEARLY LOST THEIR LIVES AND HOUSE DUE TO A FAILURE OF MY WHIRLPOOL DRYER INTERNAL GAS VALUE, AND THE RESOLUTION IS A305 DISCOUNT ON A PURCHASE OF A NEW DRYER. UNACCEPTABLE! I want the Whirlpool Corporation to replace my dryer, and hope this does not happen to any other family. Life is very important, and a company like Whirlpool should stand by there product given its only 8 years old. Please help me resolve this situation. I finished a load of laundry and removed it from the dryer at 4:30 p.m. Six hours later, before going to bed, I checked if anything was still in the dryer because my son was packing up to go on a trip. Luckily! The dryer had been off but had somehow kept heating. It felt warm on the outside, and the tub was hot on the inside. I burned my fingertip when I touched the burn mark, but it was just a minor injury.

During the course of regular laundry, I noticed a burning smell when I went into the laundry room. In the dryer were blankets used for our dogs, so no chemicals or anything like that ( as when washing cleaning rags). The smell was profuse, and I opened the dryer for further inspection. I could still smell a smokey smell, but the lint collection was clean and thought maybe something caught and resolved itself. Later, though, the smell remained in the dryer, and upon further inspection noticed the rear vent or stainless grate on the back wall of the interior was covered in brown/black burn such as you would find on a stove burner. Checked online for recalls, and although a big mess in the UK, I did not find one for the US. I have never had this happen before, and am disheartened to see several complaints about this happening on this forum, and yet Whirlpool does nothing? It was quite the investment a few years back for this washer and dryer set, and I would expect better quality. Quite the hazard in a second-floor laundry room for a gas dryer.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Gas Clothes Dryer Model# GGW9260PW3 purchased in August 07, 2006 and installed August 28, 2006. Serial # MT3501789

Uncontrolled heating of the burner tube in a Whirlpool Duet dryer (model GGW9260PW3) poses gas fire danger.

On the morning of October 28, 2014 the consumer’s wife ran a load oflaundry in our Whirlpool Duet dryer (model GGW9260PW3). The dryer finished the job and she unloaded it. Three hours later she noticed a dark brown scorch mark had appeared on the interior of the drver drum near the front on the right hand side. She touched that spot and found to be extremely hot, too hot to touch without burning her fingers. The dryer had not been in operation for over three hours. There was no odor or smoke and no sign of flames or flame damage to the exterior of the dryer. The consumer estimated the temperature of the drum surface near the brown scorch mark was in excess of 300 F and possibly as hot as 500F. The consumer unplugged the dryer and shut off the gas supply.

The dryer drum eventually cooled off and the consumer opened the front panel to examine for damage. The consumer did not see any sign of damage; no smoke stains, no flame marks, no melted parts. The exterior of the dryer drum did show a brown scorch mark directly opposite of the mark on the interior of the drum. The exterior scorch mark on the drum was directly above the igniter and burner tube assembly.

The consumer set up an appointment with Sears appliance repair service and a repair technician came and inspected the dryer. He said the hand encountered this problem before and he replaced the dryer’s electronic control broad (part# W1 0542001) and the dryer drum (part# W10381481). The technician took the original parts that he replaced. We have now run four loads of wet laundry through the dryer and the problem has not reoccuned.

Evidently the original control board suffered a failure that allowed the igniter to heat the burner tube (part# W693140) to an extreme temperature and maintained that temperature even though the dryer was not in operation. This extreme heat caused the scorch marks on the drum directly above the burner tube. Apparently this heating would have continued had not the power been shut off to the dryer. The potential for starting a fire is self-evident. The high heat might eventually damage the igniter assembly and cause a leak in the gas feed line. The gas from such a leak would be ignited by the hot burner tube and engulf the entire appliance in a gas fed fire.

This dryer was purchased from Sears and installed by Sears on August 28, 2006 and has been in continual use since that time. It has never been repair or modified previous to this incident.

Three documentation photos are attached to the email message used to send this form.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Stackable Gas Dryer, Model WGD9151WY0

We were running a load of clothes in the dryer. We noticed a burning smell coming from the dryer. When we felt the door, it was very hot. We pulled the clothes out, and saw that the interior of the dryer was melting. We called the fire department, who started arriving within 5 minutes. They inspected the dryer, removed it from the home to the yard, and started running water on it. By this point the door was starting to melt, along with the dials. The fire department ran water on it for 30 minutes.

A week later a service technician from the store where we bought the dryer (Abt, Glenview IL). He said it appeared that the thermostat that controlled the heat malfunctioned. The gas kept running to the dryer, heating it to the point that it started to smoke and melt. He said that it was definitely a product malfunction, not a vent fire.

This is a Whirlpool Duet gas stackable dryer, model WGD9151WY0. We purchased it in Nov, 2012. The location is a weekend home, and is not used that often, perhaps 6-10 times a month. We have been in touch with Abt and with Whirlpool. This model has been discontinued and we are trying to get a replacement that will fit in the space that we have for a dryer.

We have photos of the dryer as it was overheating and of the fire department working on it.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio dryer

I purchased a whirlpool washer and dryer from Home Depot March 2013. The red vent light continuously lit so I called for a service appointment in February 2014. HD sent a technician who claimed the thermometer shorted. Installed a new one, and declared it ‘tested good’. Next day. Red vent light lit again. I called for repair. HD sent out a new technician who looked at dryer and said I needed a new fuel gauge. He left without opening dryer. I asked that technician why the inner drum was all charcoal gray. His answer was “One of your children must have had a crayon in their pocket”. This same technician came back 2 weeks later with part, opened dryer and said it didn’t need a fuel gauge, it needed a conversion kit. Apparently, the dryer that was sold to me was for use in a natural gas setting, I have propane! The technician demonstrated what had been occurring all these months; large flames of FIRE running up the back of the dryer, each and every time I operated it. Thus the charcoal gray of the drum. Burn marks!!!

I complained to HD. They gave me the runaround, and sent me to 6 different people to speak to. I submitted a request for a replacement, which they declined. They are only offering to install a conversion kit, which is what the dryer SHOULD have had in it when delivered.

HD refuses to do anything but install the conversion kit into what is now a damaged dryer.

I have been without a dryer since February 2014. I have a family of 4 and this has caused me MAJOR stress and inconvenience.

On 3/21/2014, the gas dryer overheated to a point that one of the interior plastic baffles, along with the lightbulb lens, melted. The thermal fuse did not trip, to stop operation of the dryer. Room filled with smoke, unit chassis became hot to touch, but no flames were observed.

On 3/27/2014, Whirlpool dispatched a repair technician. He was not able to replicate the problem, and noted that the unit components are currently working normally. Replacement plastic parts were ordered to replace the melted components.

Whirlpool’s “Consumer Safety” department representative indicated that at this time, they are unable to diagnose the problem.

Cause of overheating & potential for fire remains unidentified.

Re: Whirlpool Gas Dryer Model number CGW9250P S/N MT012526 Fire/Explosion

    Dear Madam/Sir:

I am writing to you concerning an unusual event that occurred with the aforementioned gas dryer. The dryer had been purchased 8 years ago. There was a very loud “thud” at 07:00 AM last Saturday’s morning which apparently was caused by the apparent flash fire within the dryer. What made this unusual was that it was not a vent fire anomaly, but an apparent accumulation of fine lint and apparent feline hair (yes we had three during this time) that apparently caused the incident inside the dryer cabinet. While this was not a vent fire, need to alert current Whirlpool gas dryer owners to this for apparently it could have been preventable if Whirlpool would have alerted the owners to this potential by routinely cleanly out the dryer cabinet. This was our third dryer in almost 40 years of house ownership and this is the first fire incident. Oddly, I had purchased a vent clean out kit manufactured by [REDACTED] on Sunday to evaluate vent cleanliness. Within their instructions, it was noted to routinely clean out the inside of the cabinet only if the the home owner was proficient in gas dryer maintenance. Again, no mention of this process either in the CGW9250P dryer or the new WGD88HEAW2 model ower’s instructions. I have enclosed a copy of my correspondence to Whirlpool and a copy of the pictures showing the damage. Anticipate that this could be useful to you and current owners to alert them to this unforeseen hazard. By the way, there was very little vent debris while using the [REDACTED] vent cleaner. However, it does work very well.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this letter. If you require additional information, kindly refer to the contact information in the letter head.

    Best Regards

    [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Gas Dryer

Gas dryer manufactured by Whirlpool, model WGD9400SW0, serial MU3510660, purchased new & professionally installed circa November 2007.

In September I noticed that, after running the dryer, the smell of natural gas was present. As the dryer runs unattended in the basement, I believe that this had been the situation for some time. I contracted the original retailer for repair. Initial diagnosis on September 27, 2013 was a faulty gas valve. The repairman noted that the glow igniter was shutting off prematurely, and the dryer was venting unburned natural gas into the dryer while the dry cycle was running. The gas to the dryer was shut off while parts were on order, as accumulating natural gas in the dryer and/or dryer vent is a fire hazard.

Final repair was done on October 15 when the parts came in. My understanding is that both the flame detector and gas valve needed to be replaced.

The consumer says that he noticed a burning smell coming from the gas dryer. He shut off the gas supply line valve and unplugged the unit front he valve.

Upon inspection he pulled off the back cover and noticed a fair amount of charred lint. He pulled off the front cover on the unit and also noticed a massive amount of lint build up on the bottom of the cabinet. He says there is a heavy concentration of it where the ducting is that was on top of, around and external to the exhaust ducting section. He says it resembles a roll of insulation.

The consumer contacted the manufacturer who would offer to send out an authorized technician. He was not satisfied with the company’s response.

On Feb 14 or 15 my daughter turned our Whirlpool Gas dryer on, It started to smoke immediately, we turned it off right away. Opened the windows to remove the smoke and unpluged the item and called whirlpool for service 800 253 1301 confirmation# [REDACTED] they sent a service rep from A E Factory Service, he found that the “board” had started a fire and the board needed to be replaced along with a plastic sheet (cover) that melted due to the fire. Both items needed to be ordered. I called Whirlpool on Feb 25 and spoke with [REDACTED] a second rep for Whirlpool she gave me her direct line and extention 866 640 7146 X [REDACTED] explained that I was waiting for this plastic sheet part to arrived so the dryer could be repaired, she told me she would put my request in on a prioroty basis, do to the fire it caused, told methat A E Factory Service, would be reimbursed the 311.66 I have spent so far with no repair and that if by Wed Feb 27th I did not rec. the part I should call her again. It is now Feb 28, I have recd. 3 different deliveries on 3 different days that all contain the same part the “board” I now have 5 “boards” and no plastic sheet (cover) to fix my dryer. I have made 3 additional phone calls leaving a message each time, asking for a return call which I have not yet had. The most distrubing part is, if the fire had started when we are not home to turn the dryer off, I could have lost my house and my 2 dogs. This was NOT a lint fire the control board is where the fire started.

Smelled smoke smell coming from laundry room. Found out it was from a Whirlpool brand Cabrio AccuDry gas Dryer purchased in 2010 (model # WGD5600XW0), after searching the web for similar occurrences (found incident on Safer Products.gov website here). Removed bottom panel from my dryer and saw tons of black burnt lint covering the bottom of the burner compartment. It evidently had a “flash” fire of the most fine lint on top, because none of it was still smoldering nor was there any more smoke.

The product, in the report: Gas dryer

Upon opening our gas dryer after the 3rd load of laundry, we immediately noticed a strange almost chemical smell and noticed that the dryer seemed extremely hot, even on the outside wall. We left the door open for about 15 minutes, but the smell and heat did not dissipate. At this point I noticed a brownish discoloration in the dryer drum and (OK, [REDACTED]!) reached in and touched it. I burned my finger, badly enough that it hurt for a couple of days afterward. The entire drum was very hot. At this point we unplugged the dryer, but the burn mark continued to get bigger and it was clear that there was heat continuing to reach the drum. Eventually, we realized that we needed to shut off the gas. After that the dryer cooled down.

Other facts that may or may not be relevant: 1. This dryer had a gas leak that was repaired by the manufacturer (just after the dryer was out of warranty). This was done at no cost to us. We reported this to CPSC also. 2. About 4 months ago, the control board for this dryer was replaced because the dryer did not seem to shut off when it should (this happened intermittently). 3. We found no clogs in the vent. The installers of our new dryer confirmed that the vent was clear.

My son did laundry and used our dryer on Monday night 1/09/12, on Tuesday/1/10/12 morning our laundry room smelled very smokey, and near the dryer the odor was very strong. I called Geek Squad as we bought the extended warranty and they came out today/1/12/12, after taking off the front door, they removed the drum and the kick-plate to find the bottom of the dryer filled with burnt lint. There had been a fire under the dryer, even the sticker on the bottom of the dryer was burned, the fire was contained to the bottom of the dryer. They said the lint screen gets most but not all lint, the dryer is only 5 years old. The lint will build up again & I am concerned this dryer is a fire hazard. I asked the Geek Squad if I could somewhow vacuum the lint from that area and they indicated I could not reach the area without taking off the door and other parts. I am very afraid the dryer could start on fire again and am upset the fire occurred at night when we were all asleep in the house. Looking on line, this is acommon complaint, I am shocked this appliance has not been recalled.

This is a picture of my outside dryer vent. This lint build up is approximately 40 days. My wife and I are the only two people that live here. The lint also builds up below the lint filter. The lint filter in the dryer hardly collects any lint. The two repair men from A & E Maintenance said this is normal and that the customer has to keep these 3 areas clean. In order to clean the lint from underneath the lint filter, a plate has to be removed from inside the dryer. Two screws hold this plate in place. Both Whirlpool and Sears refuse to return my money. The maintenance man agreed with me that this could become a fire hazard. Thank you.
