The product, in the report: Maytag (Whirlpool) natural gas clothes dryer, white.

We have a Maytag gas dryer that caught fire inside the machine housing. It’s a few years old. The dryer was malfunctioning so I opened the unit up to perform diagnostics and repairs. To my surprise, I found a large amount of lint buildup inside the housing, especially around the gas burner assembly. The lint was burnt which indicates that there was a fire at some point. With this being a gas dryer, there is definitely a major fire and explosion risk with any kind of fire around the gas burner assembly. There were no injuries. The people using the dryer are all older adults who are familiar with dryer operation and safety. The dryer was installed and used in accordance with the product manual.

The product, in the report: Gas clothes dryer

I was drying a load of bath towels. Several minutes passed, when I heard the basement fire alarm go off. Frightened. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran downstairs. It smelled like something burning, but I saw no flames. Panicking, I ran through the basement. When I got near the clothes dryer I felt heat. The outside of the dryer was very hot. I immediately pulled the plug, and shut off the gas line. When I opened the dryer, the towels were too hot to touch. A while later, after calming down, I pulled the items from the dryer. They were all scorched! One of the three baffles inside the drum had MELTED, along with the light bulb cover. I reported this to Maytag, via their website, after waiting 30+ minutes, multiple times, on their 800 number. I have not heard back. I question why there was no automatic shutoff.

The product, in the report: Maytag Bravos gas Dryer

We have a Maytag Bravos gas dryer purchased new in 2011. We clean the inside (open cabinet, vacuum out excess lint that gets trapped inside the machine) at least every year. The most recent cleaning was a few months ago. Yesterday we smelled burning plastic coming from the dryer. Today I took the dryer apart to see what was going on. Apparently the inside of the dryer caught fire and burnt up some of the electrcal connections. Luckily it put itself out and didn’t burn down the house. This was definitely an electrical fire - not a fire due to trapped lint.

The product, in the report: Maytag gas dryer model MGDB835DW.

Our Maytag clothes dryer, model MGDB835DW has a very sharp, pointed protrusion that is part of the door latch mechanism. It is triangular in shape and resembles a knife blade in appearance. I have been scratched by it several times, but this morning I received a deep cut with substantial bleeding on my forearm as I transferred laundry from my washer to the dryer. I would suggest that Maytag redesign the door latch using a more rounded protrusion. I can provide a photo of the item if desired.

The product, in the report: Maytag Maxima XL gas dryer

We purchased the washer and dryer Maxima Xl on December 23, 2013, yesterday the dryer started vibrating make a noise also. I am a retired firefighter and for 20 years have done repairs on Gas appliances also. When I started to trouble shoot the dryer I found an excess of lint build up in the blower wheel. Some of the fins had a quarter of an inch on each fin. After each use we always clean the lint screen. However, the lint duct always has large amounts of lint, which we clean with the vacuum and brush. Of great concern is that my brother has the same washer and dryer. After calling him he said he had the exact same problem when his was about 3 years old. He had an extended warranty and when the repairman came out he watched the man not clean the blower wheel , but replaced it. He has always had the same experience with the lint build up that the screen DOES NOT CATCH. Over the many years in fire fighting, dryers were some times involved in the cause of the fires. Which is our concern on this Maytag dryer, that apparently many others on the Internet have experienced the same problem. For the lint screen NOT doing properly what it should be doing is the problem and the reason I am asking for someone with Whirlpool to address.

The product, in the report: front loading gas clothes dryer

The clothes dryer was on 5 to 10 minutes and it was on the “wrinkle free” cycle (not the high heat setting).

The smoke alarm went out in the home, but the consumer did not see any smoke. The smoke alarm is located the hallway, near the bedroom of their home and approximately 35’ away from the [dryer]. The consumer said his some came out of his bedroom, because he could smell smoke. The consumer said approximately 30 seconds after the smoke alarm sounded, he found that his kitchen was filled with smoke. The consumer immediately turned the dryer off and unplugged it from the wall. The consumer opened the windows and doors in the home to allow it to air out. There was a burn on the back of the dryer on the “bulk-head”. The burn mark was not very dark, but it was approximately 3” in diameter.

The consumer called the retailer on the same day of the incident. The retailer contacted A&E Factory Service and their technicians came out on 1/23/13 to look at the dryer. The technician [REDACTED]. last name unknown; I.D. #[REDACTED]) found that the wiring harness was melted. Additionally, it was discovered that there was a problem with the door switch. The consumer noted that the dryer continued to turn even when the door was opened. The tech. said that this was not supposed to happen.

While at the consumer’s home, [REDACTED] called his company and started ordering parts on his computer. At the same time, the consumer called the mfr., because he did not want replacement parts for a dryer that was not 2 months old. The mfr’s rep. asked the consumer to speak with the tech. and the consumer handed him the phone. The rep. on the firm ordered some parts for the dryer and the tech. ordered some other parts.

(1/29/13) The bulk head, wiring harness and a new door safety latch, were delivered by FedEx to the consumer’s home.

The consumer asked the mfr. to replace the dryer, but their rep. told the consumer that their tech. did not indicate that this was a unit that need to be replaced. The rep. told the consumer that regarding the lemon-law, 3 attempts would have to be made to repair a product, before they replaced it.

The consumer went to the mfr’s website and filed a report on this incident. The consumer received an e-mail from the firm’s rep. indicating that they would like to speak with him further about this matter, but he has not heard from them yet.

Although the [dryer] was purchased 11/20/13, it delivered & installed 11/27/2012.

UPDATE: Maytag is replacing the dryer, after receiving the parts a new technician came out to repair it and after looking at it he said it wasn’t safe to repair. The first technician did not look at it thoroughly, there was more damage to it that he did not see because he did not take the drum out. The thermostat was disintegrated, the inside of the cabinet was black from being burnt. He said the integrity of the unit was compromised. It is being replaced Feb 6.

The product, in the report: Neptune Dryer

The consumer says she set dryer for 10 minutes and after it was done the gas smell was overwhelming. Her husand tightened the gas line but the smell persisted. The consumer contacted a repair shop who told her the issue was with the gas valve. He said the valve was not shutting and staying open. The technician told her that they should just buy a new unit altogether because this brand is a piece of junk and none of them work. The salesman when she bought a new dryer told her the same thing.
