Emergency room Made Feb 16, 2026, sent to the company Feb 20, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 13, 2026
The product, in the report: Kenmore stackable washer dryer its white dont have access to model number or manufacturer info cause its burnt so bad
I was using a Kenmore stackable washer dryer. I was on my second load drying my clothes. It was about 2 AM in the morning and I dozed off and when I woke up to a loud buzzing, continuous sound, I opened my eyes, and my kitchen was full of smoke and it smelt something burning. I walked over to the unit towards the back of my apartment and looked behind it to see if something was on fire behind it and I could see an orange flame inside the metal backing, and I immediately turned off the gas valve and then I went to open the dryer to get my clothes out and flames just shot out and I lost my balance and fell and I pushed my back door open. My dog ran out. I ran back to my room to get my phone to call 911 and as I was running out the windows busted out and flames were just everywhere so my apartment to burnt up the whole backside

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Natural gas dryer. white Model 796.91022900
On my gas dryer, 796.91022900, SN 912KWLR00072, was not drying the clothes. It turned out that the manual reset high limit switch trip twice in three weeks. The first time, the dryer was disassembled to investigate root cause. It turned out the high limit was tripped and then manually reset. The vent pipe and vent exhaust were cleaned at this time. Dryer was reassembled and worked fine for three weeks. Again the dryer was not drying. The high limit was accessed through the side vent opening and revealed that the high limit was tripped again. The manual reset button was pushed down. The dryer was turned on and the burner does turn on. I researched root causes on limit switch tripping and came across this recall information.

Fire started inside in our Kenmore 91383 7.4 cu. ft. Gas Dryer on 9.9.2020. I had load of dried clothes inside of the dryer and put it on a 10 minute wrinkle release cycle to grab a shirt out of the dryer to wear. When the cycle was complete; I grabbed the t-shirt out of the dryer and shut the door. The dryer was off at this point. About 1 hour later, there was a subtle burning smell in the house. But I determined it was inconclusive, as nothing was powered on/ the stove was off/ and also, I live in California where there are currently fires burning. I decided it was the smell of the fires in California and left the house/ as I couldn’t locate where the smell was coming from. Approx. 30 minutes later, my husband arrived home from a work interview. He also detected a subtle burning smell but also had the same conclusion as I, because again, nothing was turned on in our house. I returned home 30 minutes after he had already been home and the smell I had detected before (2 hours previously) was no longer faint but more recognizable and I didn’t believe it was from nearby fires. I inspected the house and then came over to our laundry area where the smell was a bit stronger. I opened the dryer (which had not been running for hours) and I opened the door to find a fire inside of the dryer. Smoke came billowing out of the dryer with visual flames. Our smoke detector then went off. My husband called 9-1-1 as I began the process of trying to extinguish the flames as well as trying to get the clothes out of the dryer and onto our lawn. The firefighters arrived <5 minutes post the realization of the fire. And by then, I had been able to extinguish the fire. We lost not only a $1000 Kenmore dryer that was <2 years old but also ~ $500-700 worth of our clothes. Luckily, no one was injured and our house is still standing. But the reason for this fire occurring remains a mystery. lives could have been lost and we are very grateful that this was not the case

The product, in the report: gas dryer
The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a fire hazard.
He put a comforter in the dryer and selected the bulking bedding setting with low heat. When he went to check on the load he noticed the machine finished the cycle but when he removed the comforter he noticed it had melted and the inside of the dryer had burn damages. He noticed the plastic inside had warped and the vent is black. He indicated that the unit still turns on but he does not plan to use it.
He contacted the firm today but the automated system re-routes callers to the retailer, Sears if the appliance was purchased from them. He spoke with the retailer and reported the incident (Case #[REDACTED). He was told that any inspections or repairs would be at his expense. He doesn’t believe he should pay for the inspection or repair and requested to speak with a supervisor. He was told he would receive a call back from a supervisor but has yet to hear back.

The product, in the report: dryer
Kenmore dryer model#417-93142200
The incident took place on April 1, 2018, about 9am. My tenant [REDACTED] notified me that the Kenmore dryer in my rental property was on smoke/fire. The Fire Department came. I went to the house at about 10:30am and could smell the smoke all over the house. The garage, where the washer and dryer were located, was damaged and full of smell of smoke. The dryer was totally damaged. The washer next to the dryer was also partially burnt. Both washer and dryer could no longer be operated due to the fire caused by the dryer. My tenant [REDACTED] told me that morning her daughter tried to dry her clothes before an event. They smelled something different. Then they went down to the garage and found the garage was full of smoke. They called the Fire Dept. If the Fire Dept did not come in time, my house would be burned down by fire and my tenants could be injured. So far I do not know the cause of the smoke yet. The report from Fire Dept did not include the cause of fire. My tenant told me they would properly clean the lint trap after each use. But I think no matter what, the dryer should have a device by the manufacturer to stop the dryer from running when there is something wrong instead of letting the dryer catch on fire. After the incident, my tenant complained that: “Everywhere had to be cleaned. There is stain on everything. All my furniture has to be wiped down. All dishes need to be washed and everything that was out has to be cleaned. It is a big job.” They hired a house cleaner for me to clean the house. As a result I had to pay $1200 for the house cleaner, $4000 for smoke restoration company- [REDACTED], and $1300 for the handyman to fix the garage. I had to buy a new washer and dryer for $1453.58. In addition, I lost $1945 -half month rent because my tenants could not live in a smoky house until everything was cleaned up. Financially, I had paid in total $9898.58 out of my pocket so far on top of the manual work and research involved in restoring my house due to this incident. The washer and dryer were included in my purchase of this rental property in 2010, so I could not locate the model# and serial# for the dryer, especially since partial of the dryer melted due to the fire. What I do know is that the previous owner bought the washer and dryer from Sears. I called Sears 1-800-579-2395 on 5/21/2018. Per the representative from Sears, [REDACTED], the record showed the purchase was from [REDACTED] - the previous owner. She also was able to confirm the Kenmore dryer model# was 417-93142200. But she said she is not able to find the serial# for me.

No one hurt Made Nov 14, 2017, sent to the company Nov 22, 2017, published by CPSC Dec 7, 2017
The product, in the report: Gas Clothes dryer
I purchased this dryer new from Sears in February 2010. Shortly thereafter I smelled gas coming from the drum and vent. Sears came and changed the valve.
This year the smell has become more frequent and consistent. Around September 2017 I called Sears for repair (I purchased an extended warranty). I was told that I had to call the gas company before they could come out. The gas company determined that my vents are clear, the gas lines are in good condition and there were not leaks and the gas smell was coming from the dryer. I called Sears and they scheduled a repair visit. Approx. 2 weeks later the repairman came and changed the valve and left. I ran the dryer an hour later and the gas filled the drum and vent again. I called for the repairman to return but they scheduled a visit for approx. 2 weeks later again.
I went ahead and called for the gas company to come out and check the dryer again and they determined it was the dryer and the dryer was on recall.
The Sears repairman came and smelled the gas and ordered new parts from where the gas goes into the dryer to the valve. 3 boxes of parts. Approx. 2 weeks later he arrived again with an older more seasoned repairman who thought it unnecessary to change all the parts. He changed some parts and left with the ones he didn’t use. He ran a cycle and didn’t detect gas and left. I also informed him that the gas company said the machine was under a recall. He was unaware of the recall. The recall recommended a valve change which was done on the first visit.
Approx. a week later about November 11, 2017 I ran the machine on a 40 minute timed cycle on medium heat and after 30 minutes opened the dyer door and was hit with the strong smell of gas. My clothes smelled like gas too!
I called for a repairman again and Sears said they will not send someone out if there is a gas leak. I had to explain again that the smell is there only when the machine is running and the gas company had been out twice already and determined it was coming from the dryer. I had to insist they schedule a repairman visit. Another 6 days from now is the date!

My Kenmore elite [dryer] caught on fire from the inside of the circuit board, luckily I was able to unplug gas line and electricity before it got out of control. When my husband opened the unit, there were papers for technician only right next to circuit board. which was really dangerous and that was burned as well, Sears keeps passing the buck and doesnt want to help because dryer is 7 years old, and the salesman I spoke with laughed and said yeah thats normal its 7 years old, what ? I have a small child and kids, and my house could have been a total loss and you are laughing ?

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 110.97087601 gas dryer
Under normal household conditions the dryer started to develop a brown ring towards the front of the tumbler drum. After the drying cycle we noticed brown spots in our clothing. Now there are large holes being burned in the garments within 10 minutes of the dryer coming to a stop.
A friend of ours told us that her dad had the same model 110.97087601 from Kenmore that exploded and damaged their home. It would appear that our machine is well on the way to the same fate. 7 series models are known for this and the problem appears to be the gas shutoff.
Sears will not cover the unit if Kenmore does not flag the product first.

The product, in the report: gas dryer
The submitter states that the dryer has a defective gas valve. The submitter is filing the report on behalf of his mother.
The submitter indicated that there have been many instances when his mother smelled a gas odor in the home. The submitter believes that the gas valve is getting stuck partially open after being used. The submitter indicated that this occurs randomly and does not occur after every cycle.
The submitter noticed burn marks inside the dryer and on clothes put inside the dryer. The submitter believes the dryer poses a fire hazard.
The submitter contacted Sears about his safety concerns and he was advised that his dryer is not recalled. However, the consumer believes the dryer should be included in recall # 12-251 because it has the same fire hazard as stated below:
“The gas valve in the recalled dryers can fail to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete. High temperatures inside and on the exterior surface of the dryers can scorch the drum, as well as burn or damage the dryer contents, posing a risk of burn, fire and smoke inhalation.”
The submitter indicated that the coil was replaced a few months ago by a third party repair company. The submitter stated that the coil was an original Kenmore part.
The submitter would like the firm to replace the gas valve free of charge but they refused.
The submitter states that a Sears technician examined the dryer today and confirmed that the gas valve is defective.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite HE4 gas dryer. Model # 110.95088401.
We own a Kenmore Elite HE4 gas dryer, model number 110.95088401, s/n MS3703944, that we purchased new from Sears some years back. Due to what appears to be a design flaw, lint escapes to the area underneath the drum, which includes the burner assembly. It has caught fire twice. The first time, I thought it was our error in not keeping the vent clear, but this time I am sure the vent is clear and I am now seeing postings suggesting that this is not an isolated problem. Fortunately, the fire has never spread from the underside of the unit, but it takes me hours to clean up the residue, and the smoke stinks up the house and any clothing that is in the dryer at the time.

This caller is reporting his clothes dryer purchased from a retailer in California around the middle of 2007. He had no problems with the unit until July 28th, 2016 when the caller was relaxing at his home and around 10:00PM he began noticing that there was a gas odor coming through the room.
He went to his backyard because he was dizzy then once his head was clear he contacted the gas company who came to his home and noted that his dryer was emitting gas. The gas company turned off the connection to the dryer. He will attach a copy of the gas company’s report. Other than dizziness the caller has not reported other injuries during the incident. He said that he did contact the manufacturer July 28th, 2016 and was advised only that there is no recall but that a repair tech can be dispatched at the consumer’s expense.

Daughter was getting ready to use the clothes dryer, loaded it,and pushed start and came running for me, Dad, dryer is smoking. I ran to the utility room and smoke was coming out the back of the dryer. I put my hand on top of the dryer to reach across and unplug it and it was extremely hot. Asked my son in law to grab a fire extinguisher. I removed the screws from the back of the dryer and carefully lifted the top and saw flames engulfing the printed circuit board. I closed the top, reached for the extinguisher, opened slowly and saw that the flames had gone out. After it cooled, I removed the board, it is a total wreck, severely burned

When folding sheets from dryer, pillow case was burned. Upon further investigation, there is a burned spot on the drum of the dryer. Sheets had been in dryer for a few days before I started to remove them.
A day earlier, my family and I noticed quite a few plastic and styrofoam items in the kitchen which appeared to have a black sooty film on them.
After searching the net, found that this is not the first time this has occurred with this model and other models.

The gas valve in my Kenmore Elite (model 110.95091402, series MT4405127) fails to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete. High temperatures inside and on the exterior surface of the dryers have scorched the drum, posing a risk of burn, fire and smoke inhalation. The gas to the dryer was shut off since this was the only way to cool the machine.
My hand was tender after touching the inside of the drum.
Between November 2009 through August 2010 Sears voluntary recall of 21,000 LG Electronics and Kenmore Elite gas dryers. A faulty gas valve can fail to shut off properly, continuing to heat the dryer and its contents after the drying cycle is complete.
My machine experienced the same problem and I am not able to use the dryer.
After five phone calls, Sears has provided no concession to me or any concern. Please help!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Dryer Model number 40299032010 purchased from Sears new in 2011
My dryer caught fire. I clean the lint filter each and every time I put clothes in my dryer and check and clean the lint filter if I check the clothes before the cycle is complete. On 3/23/2015 I placed a load of clothes in my dryer, cleaned the lint filter, set the dryer settings to high, extra dry and pushed the start button. I stepped away and as I opened the door from my garage (where my washer and dryer are located) to my kitchen, about 3 feet away there was an explosion and flames shot out, up the back of the dryer and curled out into the room. Flames also came out from the front from under the dryer. I grabbed the fire extinguisher from my kitchen and put the fire out using most of the contents of the fire extinguisher to do so.

The product, in the report: Kenmore natural gas clothes dryer
On 9/27/2013 the residential gas dryer had been used to dry two loads of clothing. The second load only consisted of a few shirts. The cycle was turned off manually because the shirts were dry. As the shirts were removed from the dryer a strange smell was noticed coming from the dryer. The dryer appeared to be in the off position. The dryer was empty and unattended for about 5 minutes. About five minutes after removing the shirts from the dryer, the smoke alarms activated in the house. Smoke was then observed coming from the clothes dryer. The fire department responded and disconnected the dryer and removed it from the house. The upper rear of the dryer was very hot. The natural gas line runs behind the dryer along the wall. The gas line got extremely hot. Burn marks can be seen on the rear of the dryer. The light lense and the plastic drum attachments inside the dryer drum all melted due to the high heat. The retailer sent a repair technician who looked at the dryer and said that it appeared that the heating element had not shut down due to a bad sensor and had continued heating the dryer after the dryer was shut off. The dryer is only about 9 months old.

The product, in the report: Dryer
Caller purchased her dryer approx. mid year 2001. When it was installed the service tech converted it from natural gas to propane gas. She used it very regularly for seven years then she moved from the address where it was delivered and stored it in her boyfriends walk out basement until sometime around January 2013. In January 2013 the caller moved the dryer into her own basement until she could have it installed.
The washer was installed the week of June 16th - 22nd June 24th the dryer was installed and another conversion kit to change back to natural gas was installed. All new venting was placed. Dryer was plugged in by master plumber, it was plugged possibly twenty seconds, all seemed good, safety tech attached dryer with new venting to the dryer and put it in place. Tech started the dryer, it ran for approximately 30 seconds when the tech leaned his hand on the top left front side of the dryer just above the hinges but pulled it back immediately due to it being hot to the touch. He touched it one more time immediately, yelled “fire”, “get water” then poured the water into a one inch by one inch square where the fire had blown the plastic plug out.
Another plumber was present to help get water. He used a faucet near sump pump and near dryer that is usually used to transfer water to the horse barn to fill buckets more quickly. He said that because it was an internal fire they had to use more water because there was gas involved and if the fire had been an external fire her would have used a fire extinguisher and instructed the caller to contact 911. They were able to extinguish this fire successfully with water.
Plumber stated that this was the simplest dryer to work on, you can’t obtain the incorrect fittings or parts and these were all installed correctly. He stated that in his honest opinion this incident is causing the fire to keep going constantly instead of lighting and going on and off and the thermostat wires did catch fire due to the extreme heat.
The gas was disconnected and the dryer was taken out of the house immediately There were no injuries reported

The product, in the report: Kenmore Gas Dryer Manufactured 1999
Our 1999 Kenmore Gas Dryer poses a fire hazard because it collects lint inside the metal compartment where the gas burner is found. For the past 14 years, we have always cleaned out the lint trap inside the door to the drum of the dryer itself. However, when we had a repairman come by and repair the dryer, he opened up the metal compartment and found a huge amount of lint had collected inside the compartment which poses a serious fire hazard, since that is where the gas burner is also found. He claims that only the 1999 Kenmore Gas Dryer has this problem; other Kenmore dryers do not. There was nothing in the paperwork we received when we purchased this product that would warn us of this hazard.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite gas dryer
In 2005 I purchased a Kenmore Elite front load washer (HE3) and matching gas dryer (HE4). For the last few weeks we have been smelling a burnt odor occasionally when drying clothes. I cleaned out the dryer exhaust venting system last summer and have rigid sheet metal ducting so that wasn’t the issue. I decided to check the interior of the dryer and removed the back panel. I was shocked to see the entire interior covered with a scorched layer of lint. This dryer could have easily caused a massive fire. I have since cleaned up all of the scorched lint as thoroughly as possible but I believe the issue is that the exhaust duct is not sealed against the blower housing, which allows lint to escape into the interior of the dryer causing this very serious safety hazard. I have since sealed this joint with foil tape used for sealing furnace ducting. This is the way that it should have come from the factory. I’m hoping that someone will take notice and perhaps institute a change in the assembly process where the sealing of the exhaust duct to the blower housing becomes the norm before someone dies in a fire caused by their Kenmore dryer.
I have photos of the entire cleaning process and the sealing of the duct to the blower housing.

Hurt, care not known Made Jan 29, 2013, sent to the company Mar 25, 2013, published by CPSC Apr 8, 2013
The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite gas clothes dryer
Consumer is writing regarding his Kenmore gas dryer (Model# 110.95866402, serial# MT2702598). Consumer’s model dryer appears to have experienced the same problem for which a recall was issued in August 20 12 (and consumer believe there was an earlier recall for the same issue), but my model was not included in the recall. One Sunday morning (1/27 /13) consumer was removing clothes from the dryer and noticed a scorch mark on the drum. When consumer reached into the dryer to remove a piece of plastic that was on the scorch mark, consumer burned his finger and noticed the drum was still blazing hot, even though the dryer had finished its cycle more than an hour earlier. The drum remained scorching hot for several hours and consumer had to have the fire department come out and help him disconnect the dryer and move it out of the house as I was concerned that the dryer would catch fire. The repair technician came out that Wednesday and confirmed that the gas valve had stuck in the on position, which is the EXACT same reason for the August 2012 recall. He ordered a new part and the new part has a different design, meaning Sears realized this was a problem on my model. The consumer called the Sears recall number to see if my dryer repair could be covered by the recall, but was rudely and abruptly told since my model number wasn’t included, it could not be considered under the recall. The consumer believes that Sears should do the right thing and recall the dryer, or at least compensate me for the repair and aggravation (consumer was without a dryer for two weekends).
Call to Sears on 1/30 and emailed them 2-14.

We were drying a shirt that had water spilled on it. After 15 minutes, we removed the shirt and it was dry. We turned off the dryer and did not notice any problem.
A few minutes later we noticed strong smoke smell and called 911. My wife left with the kids while I waited for the fire department. The City of Novi firefighters arrived and determined that there was a fire inside my dryer.
I removed the back of the dryer and the bottom left half of it has burned lint throughout. This is a major fire hazard. After searching online, there are many people with this exact same problem! This product should be recalled and fixed at no charge to everyone who owns one of these dryers. We are lucky we were home during this incident!

(08/21/2012) The consumer stated that she was drying clothes on low heat for about 10 minutes. The consumer stated that she smelled smoke. She turned the dryer off. She called an air vent cleaning service. The technician came out immediately. The technician cleaned out the ducts and cleaned inside of the filter area of the dryer.
(08/21/2012) The consumer called American Home Shield for service on the dryer. A Sears technician was dispatched on 08/25/2012. The technician stated that there was a flash fire under the drum that was caused by lint. He also stated that this area is not accessible by the consumer . The technician vacuumed the lint from the dryer. The consumer stated that she had to pay for the service visit. The lint where the fire was under the drum was 1/2” deep.
The consumer stated that the dryer can be used but it has a burned smell.
(8/27/2012) The consumer called the Recall hotline for Sears. She was advised the unit was not a recall. She was advised that the product was not under warranty. She was referred to Whirlpool.
(08/27/2012) The consumer stated that she called the service repair for Sears. She was told that it was not a design defect. She was also told that they did their job by sending someone out.
The consumer stated that she plans to call Whirlpool.
The consumer stated that no clothes were permanently damaged. The clothes smelled like smoke.
UPDATE: Whirlpool says if Kenmore brand, must deal with Kenmore (Sears). If lint collects in sealed-off areas, dryer design seems defective. The product instructions emphasize cleaning lint filter screen after each use. The consumer should be warned of flash fire risks associated with this and other dryers. See attached Use and Care Guide. Additionally, when the dryer has been serviced in the past, the technician has not cleaned the area under the drum or warned me about the issue. It has always been serviced by Sears technicians.
This lint problem is a fire risk inside the unit. Consumers think they are operating the unit safely by regularly cleaning the filter screen and by making sure exhaust vent is clear. It was never clear to me that the dryer (that was operating normally) should have a technician vacuum the interior for lint. The repair technician said they see this type of flash fire all the time, some causing severe health and property damage.
In addition, consumers should be advised never to operate appliances when they are away or asleep, in case of fire (at least washer, dryer , dishwasher).

I own a Kenmore Elite Oasis ST gas dryer that I purchased from Sears in 2008. On Sunday, Nov. 13th, 2011 my dryer started having a burning smell again. I say again because back in March of this year I had a lint fire in the back of this same dryer. I unplugged it and called my independent repairman. He confirmed that it was the lint that was burning again. [REDACTED] told both my mother and myself that this was the WORST lint collection design he has seen. He also told me that the fan was very poor as well. He has been in the repair business for over 40 years. This is the second time in 8 months that the lint has caught fire INSIDE my dryer, not the outside vent. I clean the lint screen after EVERY cycle and fortunately never run the dryer when I am not home. I also have pulled the screen out and tried to vacuum down the lint screen hole. I probably do about 6 loads of laundry a week. I have never had this problem with any other dryer I have owned in my life. I am 46 years old and have done more than my fair share of laundry. I am VERY fearful that someone will be hurt, die or lose their home because of this dryer. Please investigate this dryer as I could not locate any recalls for it. I cannot be the only one who has had this problem with this clothes dryer. If you need them I took pictures this time of the inside of the dryer before it was cleaned out. Thank you so much for looking into this.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Gas Dryer, model # 110.70092991 / Serial # MK4802053
My Kenmore Elite Gas Dryer, model # 110.70092991 / Serial # MK4802053 is acting dangerously. Yesterday it turned itself on by itself. Gas burner on and hot, tumbling with no clothes, constantly beeping, multiple led’s on the display panel flashing. No idea how long it ran before I just happened to be passing by from outside.
When I discovered it running, I tried to press the “stop” button to terminate the cycle. Every time I pressed the stop button, it would make the lights on the display panel go dark and stop beeping, but it would not turn the dryer off or make it stop. At this point, I don’t recall if I eventually got it to stop using the stop button or if I unplugged it.
After unplugging the unit, I tried plugging it back into the 110V power. Several times when I plugged it back in, it would start by itself without a cycle being selected or the start button being touched.
Currently I have left the unit unplugged since I don’t want it starting up again by itself unattended. I am concerned that it could start a fire if it starts on its own and runs for hours.
After doing some internet research, I have found other reports similar to mine (flashing and beeping), but so far mine is the only one that I have found that had the problem of starting up by itself.

The product, in the report: Gas dryer
I have a Kenmore gas dryer that is leaking gas. The utility company first discovered the problem when they fixed some gas leaks in pipes in the laundry room. At the time, they determined that the gas dryer was also leaking gas and that the connector hose had been connected to the back of the dryer without the use of any sealant. They added sealant, but still detected gas coming from inside the dryer. A Sears technician confirmed the gas leak. He detected a gas leak both inside the dryer and in the flex pipe that connects the dryer to the gas pipe. I believe that this dryer contains a serious manufacture defect that poses a serious safety hazard.
