The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Gas dryer

Caller stated that after installation of the gas dryer it started to emanate a gas odor. He stated that the original unit was replaced by the retailer about 14 days later. Approximately 4 days of receiving the replacement it had the same problem and the retailed advised him to contact the manufacturer. A service technician came out and parts were ordered to repair it. However, after the repair he smelled gas odor and he had to call the gas company to come out. The gas company shut down the gas line. It took the manufacturer awhile to send out another technician for repair. He requested that they replaced the unit instead of repairing it since it was not resolving the issue, and he is having this problem with a new unit. The manufacturer does not seem to be willing to assist

Caller feels that this gas dryer is unsafe and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: GE gas dryer.

I was running a load of towels in a ten-year-old GE gas dryer. It blew the circuit breaker and when I came back in from the garage after resetting it, I smelled something burning. When I opened the dryer door, black smoke poured out. I slammed it shut and ran for the fire extinguisher. When I returned and opened the door, there was a growing fire in the dryer drum. It took most of a good sized extinguisher to put the fire out.

The vent duct and rear of the machine were clear of lint. The fire department suspects it was an electrical issue such as a short or overheated motor.

We had a remediation team at our house for two days wiping, washing, scrubbing and shampooing every room on two floors.

Thank goodness the fire was contained to the inside of the dryer. Can’t say the same for the smoke that likely contained toxic particles from the burning plastic parts.

    The product, in the report: GE Wshr/Dryr combo Model # ? GTUP270GMWW S/N TD005816C

On October 27, 2014 we purchased a GTUP270GMWW which was delivered on November 11. I had requested delayed delivery so I could clean and paint the area. Approximately Feb 5th we noticed the dryer was not heating as it should, called for a service appt which was scheduled for Feb 11th at that time the technician diagnosed a faulty igniter. He did not have one on his truck, so the order was placed. On February 21st the same technician showed up. He took the front panel off and replaced the faulty igniter with the new one that was shipped to our house. Before putting on the front panel he verified that the dryer indeed did warm up. 6:45 PM Approximately 45 minutes after he left I placed a load of laundry to dry, my wife asked me how many minutes I had put on the timer, I said 35, she then opened the dryer. The smell of natural gas was starting to permeate the house. I told my wife and grandson to get out. I called 9-1-1. I opened all doors to ventilate… Fire Department was on scene quite quickly. They came in and using a gas meter verified that indeed there was some type of gas leak.

The product, in the report: GE 7.8 cu ft Gas Dryer

After following the installation instructions, we turned the product on to run a test cycle. We opened the door to see if the dryer was working and heating properly, and found the drum did not stop running and continued to spin. The only way to stop the drum is to power the entire dryer down. When speaking with the manufacturer, the representative was uninterested in the potential safety issue. The retailer has been contacted for a replacement.

The product, in the report: White gas GE dryer, regular size for residential use. dwsr405gb1ww

My gas dryer tripped my GFCI outlet, then when checking it on a non-GFCI protected circuit, it tripped the breaker. I opened it up and checked everything and almost gave up, on re-assembly, I found that both wires leading to the drum/interior light, were running through the felt drum-seal area and the insulation had been abraded from both wires by the rotating drum. I cut and wire-nutted both wires, since the wires were too short to run properly. Oddly, this short occurred with the door closed and running, not door open, when you would expect the light to be on. The bulb was burnt out for a while. This is the first time I have opened the cabinet. This dryer does not fir the numbers for the Feb 2008 recall.
