The product, in the report: Whirpool gas dryer, white, cabrio plantinum model, model number WGD8600YW, NMFC CODE 122920

I bought a Whirpool dryer (cabrio platinum) from Home Depot (order No. 0603-400643). It was delivered and installed by Home Depot on Nov. 17th, 2012. We started using this dryer since then. On Dec.8th, 2012 at around 9pm, we were doing laundry at upstairs laundry room while my family stayed downstairs. Suddenly the fire alarm rang. We rushed upstairs and there was burning smell everywhere. The alarm system began to say “Fire, Fire.......”. I saw smoke came out of the dryer and it got so hot to touch. My husband unplugged the power. I took the clothes out, and they are very hot. We opened all the windows and the laundry room ventilation. when everything calmed down, my husband found that the internal plastic parts in the dryer had melted.

My clothes are shrunk/ruined due to the high temperature. The plastic burning smell is still lingering around the house as of now (Monday Dec.10th, 2012). I just moved in to a brand-new home, thinking about this dryer might burn down my house is really a nightmare.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio Gas Dryer. Model # WGD6400SG0, Serial # MT4701820

I purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer in Jan 2007. I have the extended warranty with Lowes Service Advantage. Recently, I identified a safety issue with the dryer, model # WGD6400SG0, serial # MT4701820. If the drum belt breaks or falls off, a safety switch is to be made and shut off the gas burner. There is a safety switch in place, however, the designed belt idler/tensioner arm is not long enough to trip the safety switch if the belt breaks or comes off. The gas burner continues to flame with the dryer drum not turning. This situation creates a fire safety hazard. Clothes are setting in the dryer drum not turning with the gas flame on. This is a major fire hazard.

I contacted Lowes Service Advantage to report the issue. Lowes scheduled warranty repair. The repair company identified the same issue I have and ordered another idler/tension arm. The replacement arm is the exact design I have in place now.

I contacted Whirlpool in Benton Harbor, MI. Customer Service checked with their safety design team and they indicated this particular model has been manufactured since 2006 and they have never received any safety related issues concerning this product and no product recalls have been issued. I explained the safety issue and my concerns. They acknowledge my concerns but are not prepared to address the issue further because of no safety history issues. I continued to reinforce my safety concerns and offered to have their engineers further discuss and review the issue with me. They are not interested at this time. I also indicated that safety issues arise all the time and this should be looked into. They declined to further discuss this issue and take the stance of no issues related to their product.

My biggest concern obviously is my product safety. In addition, how many Cabrio gas dryers are in operation with this same issue? Just because there has not been a problem does not mean we should sweep this under the rug.
