Made Jan 15, 2021, sent to the company Feb 8, 2021, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2021

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet XT3 yard tractor

I purchased a new Cub Cadet yard tractor from Turf Depot in Salem, NH. Upon using it it became evident that a dangerous situation occurred when operating in reverse. When letting up on the reverse pedal the tractor immediately stopped creating whiplash in the neck and pain in the back where contact is made with the seat upright. In some situations the front wheels will come off the ground. On a hill this could lead to a rollover.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet SLTX1054 Model number 13WK92AK010. Serial number 1F180H60078. With Hydro-gear transaxle part number 618-04270B and transaxle serial number 0161H10033.

I was mowing uphill and suddenly for no reason lost power to move forward and brakes also failed. The lawn tractor and I both ended up in the trees/brush line at the bottom of hill. Thankfully not the creek that is just past the trees. After getting it towed out and into the shop they say the transaxle is broke. My mower is a Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 model # 13WK92AK010, Serial #1F180H60078. The transaxle #618-04270B and the transaxle serial number is 0161H10033. It does not appear to be on the recall list, but it is near the same time of manufacture and resulted in the same incident that other models were recalled for.

The product, in the report: 45” deck lawn tractor

On 9/22/16 I was mowing my lawn on my Cub Cadet LTX1045. I parked it about 10 feet from my house and came inside. I got a phone call from my neighbor who told me to come outside because my tractor was on fire. When I got outside, the fire was about eight feet high and was fed by the gasoline. I melted the siding on my house to a height of about fifteen feet. The LTX1045 is a 2011 model and I see other mowers of MTD manufacture have had a gas leak problem.

The product, in the report: Lawn Tractor Cub Cadet Hydrostatic Lawn Tractor LTX 1045

Before staring my tractor I opened up the air cleaner and checked under the hood for any nests or any other foreign material. My Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor model LTX 1045 was purchased new in 2009’ I was running the tractor when I smelled and saw black and white oily smoke coming from the left front in the area of the carburetor. Next I saw burst of flame. I stopped the tractor and lifted the hood. Fire burst around the plastic air cleaner assembly on the carburetor. Everything was starting to melt so I moved a safe distance away in case of an explosion as the gas began feeding the flames through a melted hose. Soon the entire tractor was engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. I live in a rural area and did not have a cell phone with me so no help arrived.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet lawn LTX 1050 lawn tractor; V Twin hydrostatic; Hydro-Gear transaxle part No.: 618-0319; Transaxle Serial No.: 1335H40624

On 07/02/15 (approximately) while the consumer was using the lawn tractor he noticed that the lawn tractor slowed down and then spontaneously went full speed. However, the consumer did not change speed or move the gas pedal. The consumer had been on the lawn tractor for an hour before the incident occurred. The consumer turned the lawn tractor “off” and waited for about an hour for the lawn tractor to cool down. When the consumer tried to use the lawn tractor again he noticed that the lawn tractor was still doing the same thing. The consumer decided to turn the unit off. The following day the consumer used the lawn mower and noticed that the lawn tractor still jolted while being used. The consumer states the lawn tractor jolts more frequently and the issue has become worse. The consumer has noticed this occur while he drives the lawn tractor at any speed. The consumer normally uses the lawn tractor at full speed.

On 07/09/15 the consumer contacted the firm (888-848-6038) and informed them of the issue with the lawn tractor. The consumer spoke with a firm rep (name unknown) and was told that the lawn tractor was not recalled.

The consumer has reviewed recall # 12-132 and believes the lawn tractor should be included in recall # 12-132.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 lawn tractor

I bought a Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 lawn tractor from Home Depot in May of 2010, all was well until last year, after my son stopped cutting grass because it was getting dark he parked the tractor in our barn and the next morning when he went out to finish cutting there was a pool of oil and gas under the tractor. We called a repair shop and they picked up the tractor and had to replace the carburetor because something had broken inside allowing fuel to leak into the engine crankcase. Now one year later we are having the same issue, fuel leaking into a hot engine crankcase seems like a serious safety issue to me on a product that is not very old?

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet LTX1045 46” 20hp Hydro riding lawn tractor. White and yellow color.

On Saturday 11/22/14, my 16 year old grandson was cutting our lawn and mulching up the last few leaves in the yard for the final time this season with our 2 year old Cub Cadet LTX1045 riding lawn tractor. He has used this lawn tractor for the past two years every week, so he is very familiar with how this mower operates.

When he was done cutting the grass, he parked the lawn tractor by the rear door to the house, shut it off, and went inside. Within less than a minute he was in the kitchen and happened to look out the window and observed light smoke coming from the front of the lawn tractor. He immediately went outside, pulled out the hydrostatic bypass rod to put the lawn tractor in freewheel mode, and then pushed the mower approximately 50 feet away from the house while yelling to my wife (who was outside in the yard at the time) that the mower was on fire. He also opened the hood to see what was burning. He observed a very small fire from somewhere underneath the front of the engine with light smoke coming from it.

The outside water was turned off for the winter, so my wife went inside and filled a pan of water, gave it to my grandson, and he threw it on the engine. It seemed to help a little, so they got more water and threw it on the engine. They then realized that the smoke was increasing and the small fire was not going out.

My grandson ran across the street to where I was visiting and told me that the lawnmower was on fire. I went with him immediately, and as we approached my house I told my grandson where the fire extinguishers were in the house and said to go in the front door and get them. As I came around the corner of the house and saw the lawnmower in the backyard, I could see that the flames were shooting 4 to 5 feet above the engine. My grandson came out the back door with the extinguishers. I took one from him and put out the fire with a short burst from the extinguisher - it was an A, B, C rated (chemical powder type) fire extinguisher.

All of the damage appears to be located on the front, middle, and top of the engine. Whatever plastic shrouds and wires that were in those areas are either burnt, melted, or unrecognizable. The fire didn’t make it through into the gas tank, but a corner of the plastic gas tank is charred. The hood doesn’t appear to be damaged because my grandson had opened it right away when he initially moved the lawnmower.

We are very thankful that my grandson saw the smoke when he did and was smart enough to put the tractor in freewheel mode and strong enough to be able to push the lawn tractor away from the house, otherwise it would have been a much worse situation if the house or gas grill (which was also right next to where he initially parked the lawn tractor) had caught fire.

We don’t know what caused this fire. It was a cool day, the lawn tractor was not working hard at all, and there is no sign of a gas leak from the gas tank or the fuel filter. We changed the oil and filter early in the season and at that time we had thoroughly cleaned up any dirt between the engine cooling fins and on the engine itself, so there was no dirt accumulation on the engine. I also checked the oil level after the fire and it is full.

I will contact the manufacturer this week.

The product, in the report: Lawn Tractor

The consumer says when he was operating the bagger, the mower blades pushed the leaves into the bagger. He says the blades continued to turn as he was bagging leaves. He says that the power take off shaft is disengaged which is supposed to make the blades stop. He says that the blades were not running at full speed which is deceptive. He was not injured because he did not put his hands in the wrong spot.

He says when he opened the top of the bagger, he noticed that there was still air pushing into the bagger. Thats what indicated to him that the blades were still turning.

He contacted the manufacturer who said that they would fix the mower at no charge since ti si under warranty due to it being only 15 months old.
