No one hurt Made May 8, 2026, sent to the company May 19, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 3, 2026
The product, in the report: Whirlpool Electric Dryer - Purchased September 2025 Model # WED5010LW1 Serial# ME3689248
I am filing this complaint regarding a Whirlpool dryer purchased from Lowes on September 20, 2025, for over 700.00 including tax. Model # WED5010LW1 - Serial# ME3689248. The dryer is still well within the manufacturers one-year warranty period. On May 3, 2026, the dryer suddenly stopped heating and began producing a strong burning smell during operation. Upon removing the back panel, we discovered burned wiring and evidence of significant electrical failure. Due to the obvious fire hazard, the dryer was immediately unplugged and taken out of service. Whirlpool dispatched a technician from [REDACTED] out of Lexington, Kentucky, to inspect the appliance. During the service visit, the technician advised that there had been a major failure within the dryer and stated they could not determine what component failed first or what specifically caused the failure. I was further informed that multiple major electrical components would require replacement. When I questioned why Whirlpool would not simply replace a less-than-one-year-old appliance that experienced a severe electrical malfunction and potential fire hazard, the technician stated that he personally agreed replacement would make more sense, but that the decision was Whirlpools to make. Whirlpool, however, stated they would only authorize repair if the technician deemed the unit repairable. This response is unacceptable given the circumstances. This was not a minor mechanical issue. This was a significant electrical failure involving burned wiring and an unexplained overheating event inside an appliance operating within my home. Even Whirlpools own authorized technician could not identify the root cause of the failure. That creates a serious safety concern because there is no assurance the same unidentified failure could not occur again after repair. I purchased a new Whirlpool appliance because I trusted the brands quality and safety standards. I do not believe consumers should be expected to continue using an appliance that experienced a major electrical malfunction with burned wiring, especially when the exact cause of failure cannot be determined. The potential risk of future electrical fire or property damage is deeply concerning. I am requesting that Whirlpool replace the dryer rather than attempt piecemeal repairs to a unit that suffered a major unexplained electrical failure within the warranty period. I believe replacement is the only reasonable resolution that adequately addresses both consumer safety concerns and product reliability expectations.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool dryer, model number WED5100HC2, front load dryer. Silver /gray in color
My Whirlpool Dryer, Model WED5100HC2 which is less than six(6) months stops drying before the cycle is done. The drum stops spinning BUT the heating element stays on. I believe this is safety issue and could cause a fire if the problem is not recognized and the dryer turned off as soon as possible. It has done it several times and a repair is trying to be accomplished.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dryer
This is a Whirlpool Dryer Model WED4815EW1 Serial Number M80322986. The dryer appeared to stop working. The drum does not spin and the blower does not work. However we noticed that the heating element was still on and red hot. The clothes taken out were so hot they burned to the touch. We needed to unplug the unit to get it to turn off. This certainly has a chance to start a fire and I would have expected some sort of safety features to prevent this. I don’t care that it broke, but the safety is very concerning.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool - Cabrio 7.0 Cu. Ft. 23-Cycle Electric Dryer, White
I heard a popping sound come from the dryer and smoke started coming out of the top rear instrument panel. The dryer was still running and it did not trip the breaker. I unplugged it, the smoke increased and I could smell an electrical fire. The panel then started melting. The Fire department came and removed the dryer from my home. The fire was contained to the dryer control instrument panel. Took off the rear panel and there was a paper Service Manual (by the manufacturer, this dryer has never been opened to be serviced) that was sitting directly on top of the circuit board. The manual had caught fire and the electronics around it were burned. Why would a paper manual be installed inside of a dryer where electronics get hot? Incoming electrical wires coming into the back of the unit was completely fine. There was no lint buildup so was not caused by lint. I couldn’t stay in the house because of the smoke and I had already suffered with smoke inhalation while I was waiting for the fire department. I was very lucky that I was standing right there when it happened to be able to unplug it.

No one hurt Made Feb 17, 2020, sent to the company Feb 25, 2020, published by CPSC Mar 10, 2020
The product, in the report: Whirlpool Calypso Electric Dryer
Yesterday I started a load of clothing in my Whirlpool Calypso electric dryer (model GEW9868KQ3). Immediately after I pushed the start button, sparks and smoke started coming from the control panel area. I disconnected the dryer from the power source, grabbed a fire extinguisher and opened the control panel. The inspection revealed that we had been incredibly lucky. The “technician service manual” that had been taped to the inside of the control panel wall had come loose and made contact with the control panel itself. The manual was on fire and so was the control panel.
This fire was not due to negligence, lack of maintenance or improper use. It was due to a dangerous practice of taping a paper manual less than one inch from the circuit board. Upon reviewing other complaints filed with the CPSC, apparently Whirlpool has done this with multiple models. In this instance, we were very fortunate that the fire did not spread, mainly because we were home at the time and put it out immediately. Had this happened when we were not at home, the fire could have destroyed our entire house.
This is a dangerous oversight that can, thankfully, be corrected if Whirlpool addresses it. I urge the CPSC or other oversight bodies to address this immediately before someone loses their home or life to a completely preventable fire.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool electric clothes dryer
Whirlpool electric clothes dryer stopped working and it was believed a circuit breaker was popped as the dryer gave no indication that power was working. Strong smell of burning electrical wires / components followed.
Service repair tech opened dryer and found a seriously burner circuit board and lots of smoke damage within the circuit board / controls compartment.
Below the burned circuit board is stored the owners manual for the dryer. This manual is placed in this location by the manufacturer.
Service tech commented “we were lucky the manual didn’t catch fire”

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet electric clothes dryer Model
While using the Whirlpool Duet / Steam electric dryer, Model # WED94HEXR0 , I noticed an electrical burning smell from the dryer. I turned the dryer off and unplugged it. The house electrical circuit breaker did not trip off, No smoke was noticed from the unit, just a heavy acrid electrical burning smell. The dryer lint screen and the dryer exhaust pipe had little or no lint build up. The dryer tub also had the electrical burning smell. The clothes inside the dryer did not catch fire. Upon further investigation, after removing the dryer top cover, I noticed a heavy acrid electrical burning smell. I found that the main electrical harness to the inner to electronic control board was burnt from bare wires where the wire insulation had chaffed away and short circuited the the wires to the dryer metal top cover. Black soot was noticed in this area and the electrical harness, electrical control board were burned, melted and covered with black soot from the internal electrical fire / short circuit. This dryer has been in normal use for about 8 years.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Cabrio Electric Clothes Dryer WED5800BW0 S/N:M40301713
The dryer is a Whirlpool WED5800BW0 S/N: M40301713. Our smoke detector went off. We smelled smoke coming from our dryer which was running. We unplugged it, emptied it and made it safe. Upon examination, the screen inside and at the back of the drum was black and there was a piece of burned lint on the other side of the screen. The exhaust vent and sides of the machine were not hot.
The next day, I took the machine apart and there was about 3/4” of lint on the entire floor of the machine which appeared charred and there was charred lint on top of the box containing the heating element. We clean the lint screen prior to each use and I have brushes which I use to clean out the area inside the machine below the screen along with using a vacuum cleaner on it. You can not get to the back of the drum as the back of the machine is welded to the sides and bottom. The exhaust duct had some lint but it was nowhere near being blocked.
We are getting rid of this piece of... but I do have pictures which I can forward if contacted. This could have been a lot worse if we had not heard the smoke alarm.

dryer control board ignited paper pamphlet stored beneath control board, inside dryer cabinet
-------------------------------------------------- Our dryer failed at the end of a drying cycle and created a house-wide “electrical-burn” stench. I shut off the electrical outlet for the dryer and when the lid was removed, the underside was coated with soot and a section of the control board was burned/melted down. The wiring harness was also rendered “crispy” in that region. The plastic carnage was distorted but fortunately the paper pamphlet which was tucked beneath the board did not ignite.

The product, in the report: electric clothes dryer (front load)
The consumer’s adult nephew was home, when he noticed a burning odor. The dryer was in the off position. The dryer had been used the previous night, but the odor was emitting from it.
The nephew contacted the consumer and she immediately went home. There was smoke in the back of the dryer, coming from the portion of the electric plug that is connected to the dryer. The consumer unplugged the dryer from the wall outlet and when she opened the dryer’s door, she discovered that the clothing was on fire. The consumer immediately began to remove the clothes and threw them into a plastic clothes basket. However, the basket burned and melted to the point that it was not usable. When the consumer noticed that the clothing was on fire, she moved the clothes basket outside, but in the process, some of the clothing fell on the floor. The nephew grabbed a fire extinguisher and extinguished the flames. However, several burn marks were left on the consumer’s rug.
There was some yellow discoloration to the outside of the dryer. The consumer had to discard all of the clothing that was inside of the dryer
The consumer sustained a burn to her right arm, approximately 1” -1-1/2” in dia. , while attempting to remove the dryer from the home. When she returned to work, a nurse treated her burn by applying an ointment to it arm and wrapped it in a bandage. An ice pack was also given to her to apply to the injury.
The consumer has never had any problems with the dryer and has never had it serviced in the past.

The product, in the report: Clothes Dryer - Whirlpool Duet model #WED94HEXW0
My 5-year-old Whirlpool Duet Dryer (model WED94HEXW0) recently started overheating and smelling like smoke. When the top cover was removed, we discovered that the control panel had been on fire at the power leads connection. Wires were burnt to a crisp, and the inner side of the dryer cover was scorched with soot from the fire. (See attached pictures.) We’re extremely lucky that the fire was contained to the dryer and didn’t burn the whole house down.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool part number 22003062 is being supplied as a replacement power cords for Electric Dryer model Number MDE 7658 BYW. This is not the correct power cord.
This e-mail is to inform you about a potential problem with a replacement part on a Whirlpool/Maytag electric dryer. I ordered a replacement power cord for my dryer, model number MDE 7658 BYW. I received whirlpool part number 22003062. This is not the appropriate power cord, this cord is for a normal wall outlet, not the larger dryer outlet. I have spoken to two different parts suppliers for whirlpool and they both have this part listed. I received a cord from Parts Select and Marcone.com sent me a picture of the part they are supplying, it is the same one. This is the wrong power cord and it is entirely possibly that if someone wires up this power cord to an electric dryer the power drawdown will melt the cord and start a fire. I can’t get anyone at Whirlpool to talk to me and I am done trying. If you would like any additional information please feel free to contact me.

The product, in the report: My Whirlpool Electric clothes dryer purchased in February 2011 does not turn off automatically as it is supposed to when on normal setting or when on setting which allows user to choose “more dry” options. I discovered this after I forgot I had loaded dryer and when I checked it 24 hours later, the dryer was still running and the machine and the clothes were extremely hot. This is obviously a fire hazard. I have run it again to check that this was not a one time incident and fails to shut off every time. The product, in the report: Whirlpool Duet Steam Electric Clothes Dryer
I recently purchased a Whirlpool Washer and Dryer at Costco. The dryer model number is WED9610XWO. While removing a load of clothes from the dryer, I scraped my left arm as I was removing the clothes and i started to bleed. As you face the front of the dryer, the door was fully opened to the right. There is a hard , square plastic recess/insert located in the door jamb at about 9 o’clock. This recess is quite sharp. It was as I withdrew my arm with the clothes that I dragged my arm across this spot and got scraped.

I have had this dryer for about 4 years and now I’m washing/drying a lot more in the past 9 months. And about every 4 moths the dryer stops drying the clothes. We took the back off & then the cover off the vent that covers the back where it blows lent out and you can reach down barely get in that area & there is a lot of lint pressed tightly in that small area. I’m afraid this is going to cause fire. Whe should not havve to take the back off & all that to prevent this--please help.
