No one hurt Made May 10, 2026, sent to the company May 13, 2026, published by CPSC May 28, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a Speed Queen branded, front-load residential electric clothes dryer. It is white in color with a stainless steel drum and a rear-mounted internal exhaust grate (outlet cover). Product Name: Speed Queen Electric Dryer Model Number: ADE4BRGS177TW01 Serial Number: 2311010066 Manufacture Date: November 2023 Dimensions: Approximately 26.8 inches wide, 42.7 inches high, and 28 inches deep. The unit features a mechanical control dial on the top console and is marketed as a heavy-duty, commercial-grade appliance for home use. The specific component failing is the internal rear exhaust outlet cover, which is a circular metal grate with a black nitrocarburized coating. This grate is approximately 7 to 8 inches in diameter and is located at the back of the dryer drum.
I am reporting a recurring thermal failure in a 2023 Speed Queen dryer that results in the internal melting and scorching of the rear outlet cover (exhaust grate). This defect creates a significant fire hazard and has resulted in damage to clothing. The product was purchased in late 2023 and professionally installed by an authorized retailer. In March 2026, the consumer discovered that the black coating on the rear exhaust grate had liquefied and scorched, transferring a burning plastic residue onto a load of laundry. Usage and Circumstances: The product is used for standard residential laundry. Critically, the consumer spouse intentionally operates the machine only on Medium or Low heat settings to protect delicate fabrics. Despite these precautions and the lack of High Heat usage, the machine continues to generate internal temperatures high enough to melt its own internal components. Service and Technical Findings: An authorized service technician inspected the unit and replaced the melted grate. The technician explicitly stated that the house venting was clear and not the cause of the issue, however, he noted that this is a known condition for this model series and warned that the melting would likely recur. The manufacturer has attempted to attribute the failure to the type of flexible venting used. However, this venting was installed by their own authorized vendor. Furthermore, the fact that internal components are liquefying even on low-heat settings suggests a failure of the unit thermal sensors or high-limit thermostats. Injuries and Potential Hazards: While no physical injuries have occurred to date, there is a high risk of a structure fire. The internal components are reaching temperatures that exceed their material melting points during normal, low-heat operation. This indicates a failure of the safety cut-off mechanisms designed to prevent overheating. The consumer is aware of similar incidents (e.g., Report No. [REDACTED]) where temperatures in this model series were measured at 750 degrees F.

First aid Made Dec 24, 2025, sent to the company Dec 30, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 14, 2026
The product, in the report: Speed Queen electric dryer, model ADE4BRGS177TW01 (DC5003WE series)
I have a Speed Queen electric dryer that repeatedly overheats during normal household use. (First service visit was February 2023.) Three of its internal rear metal grates/covers have melted over time. The exposed metal surface becomes hot enough to cause burns when removing laundry.
Most recently (12/8/25) a repair technician measured the temperature near the rear grate at 750F before stopping the reading because the heat was damaging his probe; the tip of the probe melted. The dryer is reaching temperatures far above what would be expected during safe operation.
The dryer has had multiple service visits and replacement parts, including installation of a lower wattage heating element and I was even advised to only run it on delicate by a service technician. Despite all of this, the overheating continues and the safety concern remains unresolved. I am reporting because I am concerned about the potential fire and burn hazard.

No one hurt Made Aug 2, 2025, sent to the company Aug 8, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 22, 2025
The product, in the report: clothing dryer for home use
Our Speed Queen dryer does not stop running, if the settings knob is turned counterclockwise. On one occasion, I put the dryer on a setting that should have turned it off when the laundry was dry. Instead, the dryer ran for 9 hours while no one was home. On another occasion, the dryer was on for 4 hours, but we eventually noticed because we were home.
The manufacturer is aware of this design flaw. When I called their customer service line, they said that turning the knob counterclockwise puts the dryer in a “dead zone” in which the timer and shut off features do not work. This is not explained in the manual or anywhere on their website. The dryer itself has “Turn Clockwise” written in very small font above the knob, but there is no explanation that this is required for safe operation of the dryer. The knob easily moves in both counterclockwise and clockwise directions, with no indication whatsoever that counterclockwise is the wrong direction.
This is a design flaw that creates a major safety hazard. I am asking the Consumer Product Safety Commission to consider a recall and required safety retrofit on these dryers. There should be some repair or device that could be installed that would prevent the knob from being turned counterclockwise.

No one hurt Made May 22, 2025, sent to the company May 28, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 11, 2025
The product, in the report: Speed Queen electric dryer
I own a Speed Queen electric dryer (model ADE3SRGS177TW01) that fails to shut off at the end of a cycle. This issue has now happened twice, including after a prior warranty repair. The dryer continues running indefinitely unless manually shut off, even after the timer reaches zero. This poses a serious fire hazard due to overheating and unattended electrical operation.
The issue first occurred within warranty and was “repaired” by Speed Queen. However, the same issue has now returned, raising concerns about a defective design or recurring mechanical fault. Speed Queen refuses to replace the unit and will only offer additional repairs, despite the known safety risks.
I am submitting this report due to the repeated failure and safety concerns. This product may pose a risk to other households if the issue is systemic.

No one hurt Made Feb 3, 2025, sent to the company Feb 5, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 20, 2025
The product, in the report: Speed Queen Electic Dryer DC5 (DC5003WE) DC5 Sanitizing Electric Dryer with Extended Tumble Reversible Door 5-Year Warranty Product label says Alliance Laundry Systems (parent company I believe) Color: White
I recently purchased a Speed Queen DR5 dryer in November of 2024. After about the two months of use, the dryer ran twice without stopping, once for several hours and once for about 24 hours. After looking up this problem, it has become apparent that there is a design flaw with the timer in this unit. While the text above the timer dial plainly states to turn clockwise, it is natural for people to not notice the text or simply intuitively back the dial up a little bit should they spin it a little past the desired settings. It seems as though the dials can malfunction when spun the counter clockwise. The dial will freely rotate in a counterclockwise direction and there is no mechanical or other protection preventing the dial from being turned counter clockwise. When the timer malfunctions, the dryer will run forever. The technician who replaced my timer says he is well aware of this issue. I called Speed Queen customer service and they acted like they had not heard of this problem, despite numerous reports being on this website with parent company Alliance even responding! Further, I found many online accounts of this exact same problem. Here is one example: [REDACTED]
If Speed Queen believes this isn’t a design flaw and not a safety hazard because of other protections built into the dryer, then I humbly ask their executives to install and use these dryers in their own homes. Speed Queen is marketed and sold as a premium machine and has a commensurate cost. The design of their timer and failure mode of the machine is indeed a massive safety flaw and inexcusable in a product like this. Speed Queen should at least redesign and offer an alternative part that remediates this issue.

The product, in the report: Speed Queen DC5003WE electric dryer in white. My unit is barely two weeks old.
My brand new Speed Queen DC5003WE electric dryer ran for hours and heated up laundry room/smelled like smoke. This dryer could have burned my home down. Apparently this is a very common issue and the dials are flawed in design. The dials will break if you turn them counterclockwise, which allows the dryer to then run forever. The dial can turn both counterclockwise and clockwise to choose a dryer setting. There is no indication on the dryer to NOT turn the dial counterclockwise.

No incident, no one hurt Made Jul 5, 2022, sent to the company Jul 18, 2022, published by CPSC Aug 1, 2022
The product, in the report: Model Number: ADEE9RGS175TW01 Product Code: DR7000WE Serial Number: 1812022155 Speed Queen Dryer. Purchased in 2019. Installed by an authorized dealer and never uninstalled and reinstalled by us.
On March 24, 2022, I was drying my cotton, queen size down comforter (manufacture’s recommendations states machine wash and dry) in the dryer and noted a smoking/hot smell. (I have washed/dried that comforter on multiple occasions in the past without incident. The dryer can handle the size.) When I opened the dryer, I found my comforter with burn marks (I have photos – area covers a 3 foot x 3 foot area). The lint trap had minimal lint in it. I called Alliance Laundry Systems and spoke to “[REDACTED]”. My dryer was still under warranty, so [REDACTED] provided me with contact information for appliance repair companies in my local area. [REDACTED] also advised me that: - “we are aware this is a problem with this dryer” - “the way it is designed it can’t cool down the grate” -“ the grate can’t handle the high temperatures. Everything else in the drum can cool down, but not the grate.” - “typically you will notice it sooner, as you start to see black flecks on your clothes” - “the grate is made of a lighter metal, so typically we just need to replace that with one made of a stronger metal” I asked if there was a recall on this - “no”. I asked about a replacement dryer - “typically no”. I asked if this grate is replaced, is there the potential this can happen again - “I haven’t seen that”. I asked if I need to be concerned, as this could lead to a house fire - “the likelihood of that would be very low”. I told him I am not comfortable with that response. Even if the likelihood is low, there is a possibility, since this is a known design defect. I am not comfortable with the response “low likelihood”.
Upon our inspection, our vent from the machine to the wall had no lint. There was absolutely no trace of lint in the hose.
On March 30, 2022, my husband sent me this email to document his encounter with the service repair man. The service man with Nebraska Home Appliance came out to service our Speed Queen dryer this afternoon. He replaced the heat shield screen with a carbonized one. He said it should be better than the old metal one. He asked if we had gotten a notice via email or US postal about the upgraded heat shield. I told him no that we weren’t notified that they were having an issue with them. He did take a picture of the comforter and the damage that was done from the old heat shield. He also said that Speed Queen in the 70’s - 90’s were good quality. He said when [REDACTED] bought the brand and reintroduced the brand it’s just [REDACTED] parts with a Speed Queen brand on it.
On April 2, 2022, my husband went on the roof to check that end of the dryer vent. There was ABSOLUTELY nothing blocking the opening and just a minor amount of lint around the periphery.
Speed Queen customer service was notified on several more occasions and changed their story from a problem with the grate to a problem with the vent. They insisted that the authorized repair person come out and take readings with a manometer. The service repair person came out on June 30th, 2022 and confirmed the readings were “perfect” within Speed Queens manufactures recommendations.
