Subject: Injury Caused by Sharp Edge Inside Maytag Dryer Request for Investigation and Follow-Up
Dear Investigator,
Im writing to report an injury I sustained from a newly purchased Maytag dryer and to request that this issue be investigated for product safety concerns.
On Saturday, October 4th, my husband and I purchased a new Maytag dryer from Lowes. The following day, I did a load of laundry (towels), and after the cycle ended, I emptied the lint tray as usual. I noticed there was still some lint deeper in the compartment, so I reached in with my right hand to remove it.
As I pulled my hand out, my pinky finger was sliced open by a sharp edge inside the lint compartment. I was home alone at the time and immediately grabbed our first aid kit to clean it and try and stop the bleeding. I was frightened, but managed to wrap the wound and try to get it to stop bleeding. I waited for my husband to return. He arrived home after 9:00 PM and helped me clean the wound and wrap the injury, advising me to see a doctor as soon as possible.
The next morning, I went to Immediate Care at 7:00 AM. The wound was assessed, and due to its nature and the time that had passed, it could not be stitched. I was given a tetanus shot, the wound was cleaned and wrapped, and I was asked to return in two days for a recheck due to concerns about infection and loose skin that may need to be removed.
I returned on Wednesday morning at 7:00 AM. The medical staff again cleaned and dressed the wound and asked that I come in over the weekend for follow-up care. I am due to go back tomorrow morning 10/12) for yet another check and to possibly remove the skin that was pushed away from the wound. The doctors visits at this point are on-going.
Upon further inspection, we noticed a metal fold inside the dryer that appears to be a design flaw or manufacturing defect, it is extremely sharp and not visibly labeled or protected. Regardless of intent, it caused a deep and painful laceration that required professional medical attention.
I believe this poses a serious safety risk, especially to unsuspecting users like me, and I strongly urge your team to investigate this issue. I am also requesting information on how to file a formal incident report and a claim for compensation due to the injury, and related medical expenses.
Please let me know the next steps or if you need additional documentation (medical records, photos of the injury and product, etc.).
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: MAYTAY petpro electric dryer
I purchased a brand-new Maytag PetPro electric dryer from Lowes (Oak Grove, MO, delivered from [REDACTED]) in July 2023. On September17,2025, the dryer quit heating. When inspecting the back, I discovered the ductwork between the heating coil and the drum was completely missing from the factory.
All heat was venting directly into the back panel, creating visible burn marks and heavy lint buildup a serious fire hazard in my home. Lowes refused to assist and directed me to Maytag, who has not yet resolved the defect. This is a manufacturing issue that could have caused a house fire.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dryer serial # MEDB835DW, used in a private home. Purchased in 2019 from Lowes
I opened my Maytag dryer door and heard a “rattle”, but didn’t notice anything, then I shut the door, and heard it again, I opened the dryer door and the inner glass in the door was shattered. The dryer hadn’t been used in a few days, and I was checking to make sure I had gotten the clothes out of it from the last wash day. I’m not sure when it shattered, but it hadn’t been in use when it did, glass was all in the dryer.

Maytag Bravos dryer. Dryer overheated during use. Shut the dryer off and discovered that the heating element would not disengage unless the door was open or the dryer was unplugged. Entire back of dryer was scalding to the touch. No lint build up in vent. No obstructions to vent.
Dryer drum failed to spin, dryer failed to engage after overheating... but, plugging dryer back in and closing the door immediately engaged the heating element again.

The product, in the report: Maytag Dryer Electric Model MEDC215EW1
Maytag MEDC215EW dryer lint filter bypasses a larg volumn of lint due to a gap where the bottom on the screen filternmeets the exhaust plenum of the dryer. This causes the exhaust system of the dryer to build up and plug prematurely causing a fire hazard. Maytag tech sent out and ordered a new screen but new screen is the same az the orig kne. A chat was done with Maytag support and they stated there was no known issue. It appears to be a design flaw

Lucky it did not cause damage to the laundry room or my home other than soot staining on walls and very strong electrical burning smell. I have pictures of the dryer and the burnt control panel. Most concerning is happened when the dryer was not in use and only our two dogs in the house! I have submitted a complaint on Maytag USA customer support website.

The product, in the report: Maytag centennial dryer
I purchased a maytag centennial dryer a couple years ago. It had to be repaired for the same electrical issue 4 times now. The main board or controls wiring have burned completely four times as well as other wiring in the hoysing. I have had my electric check by an electrician who assures me the outlet and wiring specifically for the dryer is proper but something is wrong eith the product housing and wiring overheating which causes the plastic sheating on the wiring to completely burn off exposing the wiring and overtime and continued to burn the wiring till it was destroyed and the product stopped working. This wiring unit or hoysing piece was replaced four times due to the same issue happening again and again. My house could have caught fire and i believe this product should be investigated yo prevent this again

No one hurt Made Sep 30, 2015, sent to the company Oct 9, 2015, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2015
The product, in the report: Maytag Bravos XL electric dryer, model# MEDB880BW
The Maytag Bravos XL electric dryer, model # MEDB880BW, electric heating element failed and fused itself to the frame of the dryer, meaning the body of the dryer became a 240 volt potential instead of a 0 volt potential and was an electrocution hazard. Instead of failing outright, the dryer continued to function in this condition for months meaning the risk of shock or electrocution was present each time the dryer was used.
The failure of heating element was cleary due to a manufacurting defect. The lead wire of the heating element had everal “crimp” marks on the pieces which were recovered from the failed component, and it is clear that when the heating element was hot, normal expansion of the wire caused the lead end to separate at one of these crimped locations. See attached letter which I sent to both Maytag and Sears about the problem.
Fortunately, no one was injured.

Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 16, 2014, sent to the company Feb 25, 2014, published by CPSC Mar 12, 2014
The product, in the report: Maytag Epic Front-Load Electric Dryer
Maytag Epic Front-Load Electric Dryer, purchased Lowes 10/23/07, also 4yr svc plan (Expire 10/23/12?). Lint Screen maybe defective from start, to-many poor excuses for just now reporting... Dryer used lightly 1-2x/mo 2007-current (Yes properly vented to outside), first few uses seemed like crackling noise as I normal/gently removed lint from screen, screen appeared ok-ish, sometimes removing lint seemed to slightly snag at screen-edges (thought was 1/16-3/32in on-screen residual plastic from where it mounts to screen-frame). Sometime 2011 screen-cleanings, snagging more noticeable, 2012 noticed slight screen-to-frame separation top-mid & bottom-mid. Both separations appear 2-3in along inner-frame edge, ie-If you’ve ever DIY’d a window-screen and pinch-cut screen using metal roller to install the retainer-spline, sometimes initially unnoticeable cut-damage? Reporting now due to making time to research/replace that part. Belated thoughts fire hazard &/or excessive escaped-lint buildup after filter? As a professionally experienced aero-space inspector etc, I can see this was a manufacturing defect, however, as one that generally is not reported and is just a worn part replaced.

They are sending service tech but because it is not under warranty they cannot fix only get a free evaluation for me to have fixed. I m thinking it was a good thing I was Home! There was not lint not vents clogged. I have read up alot on this dryer and this is a common complaint of many consumers and there has been no recalls! I could’ve had some serious damage to my home or children if I had not been home to smell the fire. Very upset consumer. replacement cost is above $1000.00 and I am A single mother of two. Dryers should not be catching on fire for no reason. The dryer is very clean lightly used and no lint clogged anywhere.

Her brother said it was so hot when he opened it up it was if it were on fire.
