The product, in the report: GE Dryer, model GTD45EASJWS, delivered new to my home January 3, 2022, by Home Depot.
GE dryer I purchased 26December2021 is a fire hazard; the heating element stays on even when the dryer’s drum is not turning. The consumer has to manually turn the control panel knob to the off position in order to turn off the dryer’s heating element, otherwise, it stays on until the next use. It is a GE dryer, model GTD45EASJWS. I discovered this hazard about two weeks after the dryer was installed in my house, and on that day, I figured out that the control panel knob needed to be in the off position to turn off the heat. There have been no injuries to date, however, somebody else in the household used the dryer this week, forgot to turn the knob off, and the next day, the dryer’s room was hot as can be...it is a fire hazard. I discovered today that other consumers know about this, and there are [REDACTED] videos explaining what is causing it (faulty parts).

General Electric Dryer Model - GFDR270EH0WW Serial - ZD102239G
On April 20th, 2019, I placed some clean sheets into our clothes dryer, which was purchased 4 years ago. I pushed the “Power” button, then the “Start” button. When I pushed the “Start” button, instead of the dryer starting to spin, I could see a bright light emanating from a space between the control panel and the dryer frame and a sound similar to a short circuit. Then, I could see black smoke coming through a space between the control panel and the dryer frame with a pungent burning smell. I immediately turned off the dryer as well as quickly unplugged it from the wall to make certain that there would be no chance of the machine, the short circuit or anything else related to the dryer could start again and potentially start a fire in my house. On April 21st, I contacted General Electric through their Facebook page outlining my frustration with the product, mainly concerned with the safety of my family. They had arranged for someone to come out to my house on May 1st to look at the dryer. At that time, they were willing to forgo the trip charge of $109.95. The service person came out May 1st and diagnosed the problem very quickly - the main control board had shorted out from what anyone could tell, for no reason. The technician initially indicated the initial cost to replace was around $800. But when we explained what happened and the danger of what occurred, he was able to get the price of repair down to $310.00
Though I acknowledge General Electric stepped up and waived fees and the service person reduced the fee as much as possible, we have heard of other people experiencing something of a similar nature. The technician was aware of a few other times he had seen this same issue, but when we commented that perhaps it is a bigger problem, he stated that if there was a bigger issue, there would be a recall. While that may be the case, it takes enough people reporting an issue in order for them to know and take action. We are filling this out in the hope of a record of our experience is added to your database so that it is on record with your organization.
It should be noted that we did file a complaint with the Arizona Attorney General’s office. Since the complaint, General Electric did step-up and reimburse us for the cost of the dryer repair.

Text of Submitter’s email message dated June 09, 2019:
Subject: Dryer Fire
I am a fire investigator for the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department. I recently ran a dryer fire that was the result of a malfunction of the dryer. I am attaching pictures. The drum of the dryer was rubbing against the front face and wore through to a point it rubbed the two wires leading to the door closed switch. The fire occurred when the owner opened the door and sparks caught a towel in the drum on fire. The dryer had not been used for about 12 hours. The owner reported the dryer had recently been turning off on its own.

The product, in the report: GE electric clothes dryer
My product is a GE electric clothes dryer that was supplied by the builder. Model number is GTD45EASJ2WS. Serial number is DH769937C. Upon using this dryer, we found large clumps of lint at the base of the exterior vent with little or no lint in the lint trap. We had a technician come out under warranty and inspect it. He said it was a common problem and the GE engineers didn’t know what was causing it. On April 12, 2018 had a tech out for an unrelated problem. When we took the front off, there was a ball of lint about the size of a grapefruit in the blower section. Again, very little lint in the lint trap. Again, was told, GE doesn’t know what causing this. Seems to me to be a fire hazard as lint is not properly trapped and is accumulating in the dryer and the dryer venting system.

Hurt, care not known Made Nov 16, 2017, sent to the company Nov 27, 2017, published by CPSC Dec 11, 2017
The product, in the report: GE Electric Dryer
GE Electric Dryer about 1 year old. Model number GTD42EASJ2WW Serial number MG704070C . On November 15, 2017 the dryer overheated and ruined a load of clothes and melted the flap on the outside vent for the dryer. When I went to take the clothes out I burned my hand on them they were so hot.
This dryer is made by the Chinese company that bought GE appliance and is made in Mexico. I should have never bought it. I have called for service and will be trying to have the dryer replaced because I cant trust that the heat didnt harm other components in the dryer.
The service technician showed up today and replaced the thermostat. It seems to be functioning properly now. But the thermostat should have shut off the dryer when it malfunctioned so that it didn’t damage the clothes and the dryer vent. Instead the heating element just kept heating until it was an unsafe condition.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
I bought the dryer from Lowes in [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and they have all my info for my extended warranty in their computer system.

No one hurt Made Sep 26, 2017, sent to the company Feb 15, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 2, 2018
The product, in the report: Electric Clothes Dryer
While drying clothes on the “medium” heat setting – on 09/15/2017, the dryer began to spontaneously burn its electrical wires in the control board. This produced a vapor and acrid smell, which even permeated the clothes. This is the SECOND time that this has happened in 18 months. The first time was on February 26, 2016. The dryer was originally purchased on 09/12/2013 for $1244.44. It is a General Electric, electric model # GFDR485.
A General Electric repairman came to inspect the unit on 03/02/2016. He pronounced that there was a short in the master control board and therefore the board must be replaced. Eventually GE did replace the board in March of 2013. Eighteen months later, the exact same thing happened on 09/15/2017.
As I have informed General Electric, this is a fire hazard that has now happened twice in 18 months with this electric dryer. Consequently, I asked them to replace this dryer with a different model. They refused to replace it. But they will sell me a different model for $630.00. It has a list price of $1199.00. Although I think that GE should stand behind their product and replace my burned model for free, I have no other practical choice but to buy their dryer.
I sincerely believe that this model should be recalled, as mine is proof that it is an obvious fire hazard.

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 12, 2016, sent to the company Feb 24, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 9, 2016
The product, in the report: electric dryer
(11/15/15 approximately) When the consumer turned the knob (one farthest to the right) clockwise, the knob broke and fell on the dryer. Immediately after the control panel (that was behind the knob) fell on the dryer and the consumer felt a strong shock come in from his left hand and go throughout his body. The consumer used his right hand to turn the knob and had his left hand resting on the dryer. The consumer states the circuit breaker was tripped from the incident. The consumer then unplugged the dryer. The consumer did not seek medical attention. The consumer does not have burn marks on his body. The consumer noticed a burn mark on the dryer, where the knob is supposed to be.
(7/15/15 approximately) The consumer states he had a similar incident with the dryer but the control panel did not fall and he did not get shocked. The consumer’s wife contacted the firm and paid $6 for a replacement knob. The replacement knob was mailed to the consumer’s home and the consumer installed the knob.
(1/12/16) The consumer contacted the firm and informed them about the incident. The consumer was offered a repair at his own cost. The consumer expressed his safety concerns and advised the Rep., [Redacted] that this was the third time an incident such as this has happened. The consumer was then given the number to CPSC Hotline, a fax number and the customer service number to GE.
The consumer filed a similar report on his other GE electric dryer.
The consumer uses the dryer daily.

The product, in the report: Electric clothes dryer
Our General Electric Dryer Model GHDS365EFRR Serial Number GA949178G stopped working January 5, 2015. We called to have it repaired. The repairman pulled the front panel and discovered the cause of the failure was a wire harness fire. We were lucky that the fire was contained by the sheet metal and no clothes were in the dryer at the time.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dryer Model DPSB620EC2CC Serial #HG714191A
Our dryer a General Electric Profile Model #DPSB6203EC2CC Serial# HG714101A had a malfunction of the relay on the control board which burned the console and control board. The repairman said that if we had not unplugged the dryer it would have caught fire and perhaps have caught the house on fire.
The dryer was purchased in May 2004.
We and the repair man believe this is a very dangerous hazard to others who own the same type of dryer.
To replace the control assembly WE19M1454 would cost $381.30 . However, we feel that it is not worth the risk and feel others with this model and other related models should be alerted to the danger of catching fire!
We will not repair this GE Dryer or buy another GE dryer....We had a similar experience with a GE dishwasher that was recalled. We wonder if the relays that GE are using are defective or not appropriate for the machines in which they are installed.
We will attempt to contact and seek redress from GE but wanted to alert you to this problem immediately.
The repairman is from Westside Appliance in Urbandale IA at phone number [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: GE Profile™ 7.0 Cu. Ft. Super Capacity Electric Dryer with Stainless Steel Drum http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=DPSB620ECWW Model DPSB620EC4WW White 27 inches wide 24.5 inches deep 36 inches high (in the front)
GE Electric Clothes Dryer had an internal wiring issue that during use caused a short and large blue sparks were seen from the front of the dryer.
GE Electric Clothes Dryer Model DPSB620EC4WW Serial GL764073A
People in the room saw the sparks in the door of the dryer and the lights in the house dimmed when the sparks occurred. The dryer was turned off, unplugged and it was examined.
There was no visible damage to the outside of the dryer or in the tub. I disassembled the dryer to determine the root cause. Once the top of the dryer was removed it was evident what the root cause of the problem was - the two wires providing power to the light in the dryer tub when the door was open had shorted out. The wires and area on the drum were scorched and parts of the drum and surrounding areas were damaged.
It appears that the two wires providing power were rubbing against the drum for quite a while and the insulation on the wires had been worn down. After the hot wire had worn down all insulation it was shorting out against the drum.
We were very fortunate to have been in the room at the time of the sparks and were able to address the problem prior to a fire starting and that no one was injured.
