The product, in the report: GE black dryer model number GTD72EBPNODG
Dryer caught on fire even though we have taken meticulous care of it. It has given us problems from the start. Not drying clothes well and taking 2-3+ times just to dry one load. We have had the belt changed multiple times, heating element, bought a special kit to keep ot thoroughly cleaned of lint and nothing matters. Now there was a small amount of lint trapped in the back and it caught on fire. A shirt was burned and ruined. Thank God, it wasn’t worse.

No one hurt Made May 9, 2026, sent to the company May 21, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 5, 2026
The product, in the report: GE 7.2 -cu ft Capacity Electric Dryer Model GTD48EASW0WB, White, W27inxD29.4inxH44in
I bought a brand new GE Electric Dryer model GTD48EASW0WB from Lowe’s on April 6, 2026. 2 weeks later on April 21, 2026 while using it I heard “pop pop” and it blew a fuse. I reset the fuse, turned the dryer back on and it immediately popped and I saw a flash and it blew the fuse again. Luckily I was near the dryer to ensure there was no fire. It scared me as I have never had this type of thing happen before. I searched the internet and found many references over the years to “the purple wire”, and many professionals claiming it’s a design flaw. So now, while GE has just replaced my Dryer (after 2 hours of “discussion”with GE Consumer Relations), I am quite skittish and feel I need to be near the dryer when it’s in use in case this happens again. I have moved my fire extinguisher to be near the dryer. If this truly is a design flaw, it should be recalled and corrected, not just fixed with electrical tape as the GE repairman did or even use a “repair kit” that seems to be available. For me this was a FIRE HAZARD caused by a defect, not just the dryer not heating anymore as some reports claim.

The product, in the report: GE Profile 7.3 Cu. Ft Smart Electric Dryer with Fabric Refresh, Steam, and Washer Link - Sapphire Blue
Under normal operations, our GE Profile clothes dryer, model: PTD90EBPT0RS stopped drying clothes. Upon investigation of the cause, I identified a connection to the heating element had experienced a short and/or small fire. The wire was no longer connected to the terminal connector and there are scorch malls on the heating element connection, the connector itself and the wire is blackened and shows signs of heat damage.

No incident, no one hurt Made Oct 17, 2024, sent to the company Nov 5, 2024, published by CPSC Nov 20, 2024
The product, in the report: GE electric dryer
My GE electric dryer stopped working after being used for less than two years. The dryer no longer would provide heat to dry clothes. Upon inspection of the dryer during service, I observed that there was a purple wire inside of the dryer that was melted. Although no injuries occurred and there was no fire, I am concerned that a melted electrical wire could possibly lead to a short circuit , fire or produce smoke conditions. GE should inform all owners of similar dryers and repair this problem if it is a common issue that GE is aware of (and it indeed appears to be a very common occurrence according to a quick internet search).

The product, in the report: Electric dyer
I purchased a GE front loading electric clothes dryer (Model GFD65ESSNWW) about 16 months ago. The drum that holds clothing being tumbled is cracking an coming apart allowing the clothing to get stuck and potentially stopping the drum and creating a fire hazard. This is a very common complaint with this appliance which you can see on GE’s website at https://www.geappliances.com/appliance/DRUM-WE21X29724 This deserves a recall.

The product, in the report: GE ENERGY STAR 7.4cu. ft Capacity aluminized alloy drum Electric Dryer with Sanitize Cycle and Sensor Dry
Product: GE Dryer (Model GTD72EBPN0DG) Type: Electric Dryer Use: Light Duty Home Use Problem: Loss of heat function in unit. No clogs in venting system. Disassembled the unit to check for continuity in fuses. All fuses were working and in good condition. Discovered the purple wire connecting to the heat element had melted and burned out just below the connection. GE was contacted and deemed this to be safety issue. Unit will not be replaced by company and no techs are available to work on the unit. No injuries occurred. I disconnected the unit when the heating function ceased as a precaution.

The product, in the report: electric clothes dryer
The consumer has a safety concern that the product can potentially catch on fire due to the defective knobs on the dryer.
The consumer stated that she has replaced the knob for the dryer settings four times because the knob keeps cracking. When the knob cracks, it will gets stuck and will not advance. The issue with the knob started about nine months after the product was delivered in September.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer when the issue first happened and was advised that she did not purchase the three year warranty and would have to purchase a new knob.

The product, in the report: Stackable electric clothes dryer (GFD14).
Purchased a GE electric clothes dryer. Received one with an opening on its side exposing an electric motor and pulleys, all within easy reach. Apparently, it was shipped with a missing vent “knock out panel.” When contacted, GE parts department said they didn’t offer any type of cap, plug or cover for that opening. I was told “that’s just the way it’s made.” Other manufacturers do offer caps (e.g., [REDACTED]).

No incident, no one hurt Made Apr 22, 2021, sent to the company May 3, 2021, published by CPSC May 17, 2021
The product, in the report: GE Electric Dryer, Model No. GFDR270EHWW, Serial No. RF178370 The web site for the model is here: https://www.geappliances.com/appliance/GE-8-1-cu-ft-capacity-RightHeight-Design-Front-Load-electric-dryer-with-steam-GFDR270EHWW
On April 22, 2021, our GE electric clothing dryer, model no. GFDR270EHWW, serial no. RF178370, was operating on a low heat, manual time cycle. It began to make what sounded like a loud “buzz” sound, so we immediately turned it off. When we did, a significant amount of black smoke was emitted from the space between the top right of the dryer and the control panel. We immediately unplugged it and grabbed a fire extinguisher. Fortunately, while there was a lot of smoke, there was no visible flame.
After giving the machine time to stop smoking and cool, we removed it from the laundry room and, eventually, to the garage due to the noxious smell it continued to emit. After watching a YouTube video, we removed the control panel to make sure whatever happened stopped. When we did so, we discovered that one of the harnesses apparently failed, but incredibly, the plug to the harness was held together or secured with what appeared to be masking tape. We do not know, but strongly suspect, that this haphazard installation or build caused a short, which had we not discovered it so quickly, could have resulted in flame and burned down our house and caused bodily harm or death to any one or all of us.
We purchased the dryer in May or June of 2016. It had been serviced once, while it was still under warranty, for failing/failed rollers on the drum by a GE authorized or certified technician. (The warranty claim was made to GE.) We never serviced the dryer ourselves, as we had no need to. However, we regularly cleaned the lint trap and the exhaust hose to the exterior of the house.

No one hurt Made Dec 28, 2017, sent to the company Mar 16, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2018
The product, in the report: GE® 8.3 cu. ft. capacity RightHeight™ Design Front Load electric dryer with steam (GFDR485EFRR)
I had just put a load of wet laundry into my 18mo old, GE front loading, electric dryer. The appropriate settings were chosen, and the unit was turned on. Approximately 10 mins later, acrid smoke began to emanate from the front-right of the control panel, which set off my home fire alarm. The unit was still running, and I quickly turned the unit off via the panel, as well as unplugged the unit from the wall outlet. After the smoke cleared, I checked the vent to ensure it wasn’t a lint fire (it wasn’t). I subsequently hired an appliance repair company to come out and diagnose/repair the unit. Upon inspection and removal of the control panel from the dryer, significant damage was obvious on the control panel. Several electrical wires from the electrical harness were melted at their connectors, several panel relays were charred and melted. There was melted and burnt plastic and wiring in multiple places on the panel. It appears that 220v electrical arching across the wires led to melting of electrical components, but was not sufficient to trip the home (30A as code compliant) circuit breaker, nor enough to disable the unit. Had I not been present, it more than likely would have continued until a fire started, which could have burned down my home with my pets within.

Circuit board in our electric dryer caught fire, we had this exact same thing happen after 5 years of owning this product. Started smelling burnt plastic and luckily caught it before more damage was done. I had the entire top of the unit replaced at that time with the same GE product and now less than 5 years later we have another fire exactly the same as before. We don’t feel safe trying to it repair again.

The product, in the report: GE electric front load clothes dryer, model DPSE810EG0WT, purchased approximately 7/2007
Our GE electric clothes dryer was running and drying a medium load. The control board began to sizzle and arc. It caught fire before I could turn the power off. The fire self extinguished. The damage appears limited to the control board assembly. This dryer is model number DPSE810EG0WT. It was the original control board. This only identifier for that board that I have is AP4980747. The current replacement board part number is WE04M10004.

The product, in the report: GE® Electric Dryer Model #: GTDP740ED0WW Serial #: HA803691C
I moved my GE Electric dryer Model #: GTDP740ED0WW away from the wall for cleaning. The Dryer remained plugged in but the flexible vent hose was removed from the dryer exhaust. When re-attaching the flexible vent hose, there were sparks when the vent hose touched the dryer vent.
Upon review of the manual and installation instructions, there is no mention that the dryer needs to be unplugged when working with the vent hose. In fact, page 2 of the Installation Insturctions lists: Step 5: Connect the Power Supply Step 6: Connect the external exhaust
Product Information: http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=GTDP740EDWW
*Note that the link to the installation instructions on this site were not working at the time of this message.
My solution was to unplug the dryer, attach the vent then plug the dryer in. This worked and there were no issues.
My concern is that if the flexible vent hose becomes detached from the dryer, then touches the back of the dryer, sparks could cause a fire in the vent or laundry room.
GE was contacted and there is a service appointment scheduled for 8/21/13

Turned dryer on timed cycle, low heat. 5 minutes later, dryer beeped three times and shut down. Smoke was coming out. When turned on power again to try to identify problem it was evident with in 4 seconds that there were sparks/flames behind touch pad. Immediately turned off dryer and unplugged waited for dryer to cool and removed back panel. Obvious wiring charring. Picture and video attached. Disturbing that I am the fourth person to report this and my picture looks identical to the others. To repair would be over $350, only paid about $700 6 years ago.
