The product, in the report: Life of the Party Soap Making Kit

Consumer wanted to report that her daughter suffered 3rd degree burns when her Life of the Party soap making kit malfunctioned. The consumer stated the instructions off the product were very vague. On the outside of the product it states that it is marketed for children 12 and older with adult supervision, where as the instructions on the inside of the box don’t mention anything about adult supervision and stated the product is for ages 9 and up. The consumer’s daughter, as directed placed the solid wax from the product in 1 and 1 half inch chunks into a measuring cup then placed it into the microwave. The product indicates to place the wax in the microwave for 40 seconds at 10 second intervals. Her daughter removed the product from the microwave, then placed a few drops of color and proceeded to stir the product. Afterwards, her daughter placed the product in the plastic mold intended for shaping the wax.

Right after stirring the contents, the mold container exploded and hot wax projected itself on to the consumer’s daughter face. The product went from her right eye resulting in 1st degree burns and up to her forehead just below her hairline resulting in 2nd degree burns. The consumer had her attorney contact the manufacturer. The consumer’s attorney sent her a letter on May 24th, 2011 stating that he has been in contact with an officer from Life of the Party. The consumer stated that her attorney will also call the retailer. The consumer’s daughter was taken to the Provina St. Joe’s Hospital in Joliet,IL after the incident for a couple hours and a cold compress placed on her head, while the hospital were in contact with another hospital for the duration of her stay. The consumer by direction of the hospital in Joliet, then had to take her daughter to Loyola hospital in Maywood, IL 40 minutes away from the hospital in Joliet.

Her daughter was in the hospital overnight until five o’clock in the afternoon the next day. Her daughter was given Tylenol with codeine as well as bassatracin ointment. The consumer had to take her daughter to the hospital in Loyola 3 days after the incident for a follow-up examination. Her daughter was not referred to a primary care physician but has to have an SPF of over 100 for the summer to avoid sunburn on the affected area. The consumer has been directed by her attorney to file this report to the CPSC and express just how unsafe the product is.
