  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Dec 4, 2025, sent to the company Dec 8, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 2, 2026

The product, in the report: Demdaco brand soft busy book titled Mermaid Friends where are you? Its about 7 squared and made of polyester with an image of a cartoon mermaid on the front and miniature soft pop outs throughout. One of these pop outs is a squishy honking starfish attached to the book with a shoelace.

My 6 month old baby had a dangerous incident occur where a string from a toy wrapped around her throat and could have cause strangulation. The incident left a red band around her throat from where she pulled on the string to try and free herself. I had left her for less than a minute unattended in her play space with a cloth book made by Demdaco and titled Mermaid Friends. It is a busy book with gentle and soft pop outs. One of these pop out toys is a starfish that make sounds and is attached to the book with a short shoelace less than a foot long. However, it is still too long because my baby managed to wrap it around her neck by falling back on the book and pulling on the starfish toy as she rolled. If I had not come straight back into the room I dont want to even imagine what could have happened! The red shoelace cloth burn on her neck proves the force she was pulling with and that it could have choked her. The shoelace length was simply too long. The book has a cloth tag but no warnings are on it and I don’t recall any other removable tags that listed concerns or any age limits. This was incredibly dangerous and should be recalled for any other potential risks to children as soon as possible!
