The product, in the report: cat litter
(Information was taken from an email that the consumer sent to the Info Center)
Last night I watched a TV news program that implicated light weight cat litter in causing respiratory problems in cats. I also checked the internet and found a substantial number of anecdotes alleging similar problems. I too have a cat that has, in my opinion and several vets’, been affected by this type of litter. However, I am not as concerned about this issue as the fact I personally now am suffering the effects from this material.
I have had a low oxygen issue and CHF but it has been made much worse since I began using this product about nine months ago. The product container bears no warning labels of any kind relating to any hazards of any type. (Tidy Cat light weight litter).
However, to relate my experience, over many months my cat and I became very sick and the cause was mysterious.
We both went to our respective medical doctors and learned we both had developed severe “asthma”. This material clings to the pets paws unlike previous litter and it spreads everywhere in the house. The cat tracks the material to our bedroom and bed, to the kitchen, to the living room and everywhere.
Cleaning the litter box generates a cloud of dust, and the vacuum too produces a large amount of litter dust. Just pouring it into the litter box produces excessive dust. Our sputum and the cat’s sputum has been filled with this material as determined upon examination. We were literally dying from this material until I discovered the issue and tracked the problem’s origin as the litter.
We are asking that you investigate this product and if my allegations and analysis prove true either ban it from the marketplace or put strict warning labels on the product to warn users of the potential harm. Please respond to this in a timely manner as many people could be harmed and die from this unknown menace to our health. People and pets with sensitivity or preexisting conditions need to be protected.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer about the issue and was advised that the material in the product could not have caused the problem.
