The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Jun 6, 2013, sent to the company Jun 14, 2013, published by CPSC Jun 28, 2013

The product, in the report: cat deterrent- used to prevent cats from urinating in unwanted locations

We bought Sunbeam Barricade Max cat deterrent because our cats had begun spraying in the house. This product was purchased at Petsmart. It comes in a white bottle without any safety features to open it. It does say keep out of reach of children on the front (but most things say that). The back of the bottle simple says “Ready to us pump spray discourages cats from urinating, defecating, and digging in treated areas”. My husband sprayed it all over the problem area. Immediately we noticed it was very irritating to our lungs and opened the window. We then red the warnings and first aid. Here it is directly from the bottle: “if inhaled: Move person to fresh air. If person is not breathing call 911 or an ambulance. Then give artificial respiration- perferably mouth to mouth if possible.”

My husband and I had a cough for over a week after using this product.

It the product is so toxic that it needs to explain how to give mouth to mouth resuscitation it would see that the warnings should be more evident and that there should be a safety device to prevent kids from getting into it. The packaging is very unassuming- a cute little kitty on the front of an average looking white spray bottle.

The active ingredients are as listed: methyl nonyl ketone 1.9% related compounds 0.1%
