  1. First aid

Made Jan 7, 2025, sent to the company Jan 13, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 28, 2025

The product, in the report: Skoon cat litter is a pebble shaped litter made of diatoms, the color mostly ranges from white to light grey. Skoon makes two sizes of pebble, a larger pebble and a smaller pebble. I have used both products. I have only used the unscented litter.

I have used Skoon cat litter for the past few months and every time I open a new bag and pour it, there is a lot (the most of any car litter I’ve ever seen or used) of dust. Especially for a litter brand that claims 99% dust free. It’s a huge dust clouds that lingers and I either walk away for it to settle or push through to get my litterboxes refilled. And then every time I scoop or stir the litter or my cats dig, it kicks up dust again. Well, being made of diatoms, there are silica crystals in the litter. And diatomaceous earth is regulated and not used around animals and limited with humans and not in the home, because it is a powder. But Skoon is unregulated and used specifically for animals and in the home even though it is made of the same thing as DE. Skoon claims safety because it’s a pebble and not a powder, but the vast amounts of dust says otherwise. Many people continue to use the product for the pros even though the con of the dust is a problem.

Yesterday evening, I opened and poured two bags of the diatom cat litter. Clouds of dust went into the air in my bathroom and while my bathroom fan was on, it was not enough. As it is the middle of winter and the heater is on, I did not open the window this time. I proceeded to refill my litterboxes, all while breathing the dusty air. My chest felt tight after and my breathing became shallow, so I used my rescue inhailer to help. Today, I woke up with heavy/tight lungs that hurt when I breath, and a very spare throat but no swollen tonsils (which would be a sign of sickness, so it doesn’t hurt because I’m getting sick, it hurts from inhilation of the dust). I have asthma/use a rescue inhailer sometimes when I get sick with a couch, when I breath extremely cold air, or when the air is heavily polluted. I stay indoors during my areas annual fire season and wear a mask outside if I have to go outside. I am just lying in bed currently and my lungs feel like I’ve just run a mile. I’m hoping with some use of my inhailer, the effect goes away and I won’t have to go to the doctors. Today I realized my cats have been coughing/hacking/throwing up more frequently in the last few months, since I’ve started using Skoon cat litter. If it’s dusty every time I pour new litter out, and every time I scoop and stir the cat litter, then it’s dusty every time they dig/use it too. Which means their lungs are also being affected. Since they clean themselves by licking, any dust that settles on their fur or paws is also being inhaled/ingested.

I am stopping use of this litter and switching back to grass seed litter which has much lower amounts and non diatom dust. I will continue to monitor my breathing, use my inhailer, and seek a doctor if it does not improve in a few days or gets worse.
