  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Aug 5, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 23, 2011

The product, in the report: meridian nurturecalm pheromone collar--feline calming collar for cats and kittens.

After placing the collar on my cat, there was a large amount of loose powder. My husband was nuzzling with the cat and playing and subsequently inhaled the substqance. He immediately became dizzy, disoriented, lost feeling in his limbs, eyes dialated, and became almost giddy. I immediately took him outside and washed his nostrils with saline. After being outside for approximately 30 minutes he felt better. During this time, I went back in and removed the collar and cleaned up the powder residue from the cat. I opened the windows and turned on the air to try to remove any airborn powder left. When he returned inside the dizziness returned but not severe, nor did the other symptoms reoccur. He did experience a throbbing headache when all was done. I realize the allergic reaction he had was probably rare and due to the inhalation of the product immediately after being put on, but if this had been a child, I fear the damage could have been more severe or permanent. There is a warning to wash hands, but nothing regarding children, inhalation, or ingestion of the product. After receiving the MSDS sheet, the primary inert ingredient is acetic acid ethenyl ester, polymer with ethene which is used in anesthetics and alcohol.
