  1. No one hurt

The product, in the report: Petnova CatGenie self-cleaning litter box

Purchased a new Petnova CatGenie litter box 3 years ago. It caught on fire in our home on 11/1/24. We were home at the time, so my husband unplugged it and put it out. Its just over 3 years old, never gets used, its only plugged in for the *never* occasion that the other two boxes our 3 cats actually use are occupied. We run a cleaning cycle bi-weekly so the water doesnt stagnate, but the box is otherwise unused and in pristine condition. I called the customer support number on CatGenie.com and told the rep the events and she sounded SHOCKED, saying Ive never heard of that before! Ill escalate this to management right away!! And said the words It couldnt have caught on fire. Its designed not to. I finally get a call back 3 hours later. The resolution I was offered was to ship it back free of charge, and they could repair it for $250. She said thats all she can offer. Turns out, theres a significant number of people reporting the same issue on several social media platforms. This isn’t a warranty issue, its a safety recall issue. My home still smells like burnt plastic throughout and were lucky thats our biggest concern

The product, in the report: Self cleaning and flushing litterbox

There was an electrical fire from our CatGenie 120 unit, used by our cat, possibly overheating during a drying cycle. The plug was burned, the outlet was scorched and melted and the wall above the outlet was scorched. The unit was plugged into a GFCI outlet. After contacting CatGenie the only offer they have is to repair the unit for $200. This could have burned our house down.

The product, in the report: Product is described as a self cleaning, self washing litter box. It uses plastic pellets as litter, is connected to a water supply, and flushes itself after the cat uses it. It then uses hot air to dry the plastic pellets.

At approximately 1 am on March 28th, 2014, my wife and I were awakened to the smell of smoke in our house. We discovered that our automatic litter box, sold under the name “Cat Genie” by a company by the name of PetNovations, was on fire. We immediately unplugged the unit, and once the fire was out, removed it from our home. I received a minor burn to my right palm while attempting to remove the unit from our home. I did not require medical attention for the burn. I later disassembled the main power unit and took pictures of the inside, which I will attempt to attach to this report. I contacted the manufacturer’s customer service via email the next day. Today I received a call from a supervisor in their customer support center and was told this was a common problem and that the unit was designed with specific safeguards to prevent fires. He also stated that by looking at the pictures of the charred insides of the unit, the safeguards “worked as designed”. I was stunned by that statement. He stated that they would send us a check for the cost of the unit (we purchased it in May of 2012 and it was still under warranty), and would also be willing to pay a company to clean the smoke smell from our home. He then emailed me a shipping label and asked that I ship the power unit back to the company so their engineers could examine it. I have not shipped the unit back yet, and am hesitant to do so pending further investigation by an independent source. Had this happened in the middle of the day when my wife and I were both gone, I am certain our house would have burned to the ground.
