The product, in the report: Revlon Curling Iron Model RV050, Type RC050N1AP, outlet engraved 5214
I am writing to report a serious safety incident involving s Revlon curling iron that malfunctioned and nearly caused severe injury to my wife.
While she was using the product under normal, routine conditions, the curling iron suddenly emitted a burst of fire. As a result, her hair caught fire, she sustained burns to her hand and chest, her sweater was ruined, and our wall outlet was damaged.
Although my wife had owned this curling iron for some time and had used it many times without issue, this incident occurred unexpectedly during standard use. We are grateful that the outcome was not more serious, but we are deeply concerned and frustrated that such a dangerous malfunction occurred at all.

The product, in the report: Revlon curling iron, model RV051. “Helen of Troy” line. The number 3621 was embossed on one of the electrical plug prongs
A Revlon curling iron (Model RV051) spontaneously started shooting 4” to 5” sparks out from near the tip. At the time, it was resting on the counter top (fortunately it was not being used on the hair at that moment, and was not near flammable materials, so no injuries or damage occurred). My wife was in the midst of using the product. Additional product information: “Helen of Troy” was embossed on the unit itself. On one of the electrical plug prongs was embossed the number “3621”.

I was using my Revlon hair straightener when I heard a pop and a small fireball shot off the end. Thankfully I had just finished straightening my hair so I was not holding it near my head. No one was injured and nothing harmed, except for the straightener. I took a picture of the burn mark on the straightener.

The product, in the report: Revlon Rvst2046 Pefect Heat Ceramic Straightener, 1 Inch, Black
I was using a Revlon flat iron to style my hair when I heard a loud popping sound and saw a ball of sparks exploding out of the place where the cord connects with the flat iron. While I managed to prevent my hair from catching fire, my arm was burned. In addition to the red burn, my arm had a black soot-like substance on it. Washing off this substance was painful due to the burn. Burn cream was used to treat the wound along with OTC medication for pain.

The product, in the report: Revlon 1 1/2 inch barrel curling iron . pink in color The model # RVlR1021. Type: RC1021AP
I was curling my hair today with a fairly new Revlon curling iron. It made a really loud pop noise and then a fire ball shot out of the end of it ( almost blowing the wires completely out) and burned my arm. Upon further investigation I have discovered that the very exact same incident has occurred to other people. Luckily our breaker tripped cutting off the electricity. And also thankful it burnt my arm and not my face or eye area. I have pictures of the burn.

The product, in the report: Revlon 3/4-inch curling iron MODEL RV052 with black handle and gray barrel; Type [REDACTED] - Helen of Troy; Intertek 3095900
I had finished using the Revlon curling iron Model V052 and put it in an aluminum stand I use to hold it. I did not turn it off (big mistake) as it has an automatic shut off.
I was in the next room for a couple of minutes and smelled something burning. The cord inside the barrel had overheated. When I picked it up, the barrel fell downward revealing the scorched cords inside and the melted plastic holding the barrel to the handle. My immediate reaction was to put the barrel under cold running water. If I had done that, I would probably have been a big crispy in the sky.
Purchased the iron in September of 2014.

The product, in the report: Revlon Perfect Heat 1” Curling Iron, RV051
Using a Revlon 1 inch ceramic curling iron for about 8 seconds, I noticed a burning smell. I immediately tried to remove the curling iron from my hair but it melted & burned off about 2 inches of my hair & the barrel of the curling iron appeared to be broken off from the handle. The curling iron was purchased in November 2014 at Walmart. I took pictures of my poor hair melting on the iron to send you. I’ve used this brand/type curling irons for years with no problem whatsoever. I believe this must be defective. Please contact me with a response. Thank you. The product, in the report: Revlon model RV051 Perfect Heat curling iron with a 1” barrel.
I plugged in my curling iron to heat it up and proceeded to blow dry my hair, which took about 3-4 minutes. During this time I smelled something ‘hot’. Assumed it was the blow dryer, I have had them overheat before when not enough air can get through. I then move to curling my hair I sectioned off a piece of hair wrapped it around barrel and rolled it up, immediately smoke started to come off my hair and I could smell singed hair. I removed the curling iron and my hair came with it. I immediately unplugged the curling iron. It took about 4-5 minutes for me to get all the singed hair off what was left of that section of hair, most of it fell to ash on my back and the floor and counter. This curling iron was a Revlon R051, I had been using it for about 6-8 months. I contacted Revlon who referred me to Helen of Troy.

The black and copper washed off my wrist and I wasn’t burned. I felt a small shock. Thankfully this wasn’t near my face.

The product, in the report: curling iron
I purchased a Revlon branded curling iron bearing an ETL test mark about 30 days ago from Amazon. I have used the curling iron once a day for most days of the week. Earlier this week, I plugged in and turned on the curling iron and was stunned to see the plastic tip fall off, smoke start coming out the exposed end, and one of the sets of combs along the side start to rise due to the heat. I unplugged the curling iron and moved it outdoors.
Revlon stated that the curling iron comes from Helen of Troy in El Paso, TX. The curling iron is marked as: - Model: RVIR1054 - Type: RC1054AP - Rating: 120V/240V, 60/50Hz, 80W Helen of Troy - Intertek: 3095900 - Conforms to ANSI/UL Std 859 - Made in China
Although there were no injuries or property damage in this case, I can see where a recurrence might result in injury or property damage.

The product, in the report: Revlon Wet/Dry Straightner model RVST 2025 type rc2025bl.
My Revlon Wet/Dry straightner is a really good straightner. However recently after I use it I turn it off. Hours later I would go back in the room and find it is hotter than when I left it. I know have to unplug it after every use or it will not cool down.

She stated that she looked at the iron and she noticed that the screw that held the barrel and the handle together came loose. The consumer stated that she tried to use the iron again and when she picked it up the iron came completely apart.
The consumer contacted the retailer and they offered to take the product back. The consumer returned the iron to the retailer on 06/28/2012 and received a refund.

The consumer believes that this product should be investigated due to the burning hazard that it poses to the consumer.

The product, in the report: Revlon Curling Iron Model #RV052 Type RC52M with a .75” barrel, sold by Revlon and Manufactured by Helen of Troy
3/15/2012 I plugged in my curling iron (Revlon Model #RV052 Type RC52M with a .75” barrel) and let it heat up as I do with every use. I began to curl my hair. On the second roll of hair near the crown of my head, and while holding the curling iron with my right hand, I heard a loud “snap” and a yellow fire ball blew out of the end of the handle. At the same time I received a terrible shock and burn to my right arm. Thank goodness my curling iron was plugged into an G.F.I. outlet, as it immediately cut the power to the curling iron and tripped the circuit breaker. I dropped the curling iron and looked at my arm and realized that I had been burned by this. I had received a shock and was obviously shook by this incident. I inspected the curling iron and where the cord meets the swivel end (to keep the cord from getting tangled), I saw that the cord had been literally blown out of the swivel and a couple of the copper wires were melted.
I had not had any problems with this curling iron prior to this happening. No frays, no over heating, absolutely no problems prior to this.
I did see my physician for the burn who told me that it was definitely an electrical burn and that I needed to watch it carefully for 24-48 hours to make sure that the tissue under my skin is not damaged.
I did some research online on this model and there are numerous reports of the same thing happening to others as well.

The product, in the report: Revlon model RV484 1875W, 125 vAC, 60 Hz, Helen of Troy - Made in China...Interek 3175842 - Type RD484FA
While blow drying my hair, the Revlon Model RV484 - 1875 W 125 Vac 60 Hz - Helen of Troy - Made in China model blew up in my face with sparks showering into my face and neck. The failure site was where the cord fed up into the unit. I was not in the practice of coiling this cord up. I did notice there was no strain relief at this site..The unit had only been in use for six months. This is a potentially very dangerous situation. I was fortunate because I had a GFI on the electrical outlet to power the unit.

No one hurt Made Nov 1, 2011, sent to the company Nov 9, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 25, 2011
The product, in the report: curling irom
A very large electrical spark (looked like an orange fireball) exploded out of my Revlon curling iron model RV051 while I was styling my hair. Luckily the spark went away from my face and I was not burned. However, I have searched online and found others have had similar problems with Revlon curling irons.
I contacted Revlon regarding the problem and they passed me along to the company they said makes these curling irons for them (Troy Industries). They offered me another curling iron which I said I really didn’t want unless they could explain why the one I had malfunctioned and assure me that the same thing wouldn’t happen to a new one. They said I would have to send them the curling iron so that their product safety review company could determine the cause of the malfunction.
It seems strange to me that since others have had similar issues with their curling irons spanning over several years that they don’t already know what the cause of the malfunction might be. I don’t trust that they care or will follow through to make sure this product is made safe for the public. I hope you are able to follow through with them to see that this occurs.
Thank you,

The product, in the report: Hot Air Styling Brush
On 9/5/11 I was using this brush & when I turned it off as I was moving it away from my face, there was a loud pop and sparks flew out of the brush, one spark burning a hole in my nightgown. The other sparks I put out on the floor. If this had still been near my face, it might have caused major damage to my skin or eyes. Or if had been wearing something else, it could have caught fire. I felt the burning heat through my nightgown but was not burned. This is the 3rd brush I have owned. 1st one lasted for years. 2nd one broke right away and I exchanged it for this 3rd one just this year. I had noticed the quality went down as the barrel tip kept coming off or the whole barrel would come loose. The day this happened, I also notice the heat seemed to be not working well on the high setting but working just fine on the low setting which is the main setting I use. I did report this to Revlon through their web site.
