The product, in the report: 1 and 1/4 inch ceramic barrel clipless hair curler. This is a curling wand for your hair. The common name to refer to this product is a hair wand.
This morning, while styling my hair, I got a second-degree burn when my forearm barely glanced- literally barely touched, the barrel of my clampless curling wand. I was wearing the safety glove, but it just covers to the base of the palm. My complaint and great concern is two fold. 1. The heat-resistant glove that comes with the product insufficiently protects consumers. 2. The product seems far to hot to be handled by the average consumer. While the temperature rating states that it heats to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, I question the safety of it given the extreme likelihood of a consumer accidentally burning themselves with it. I am a grown woman. I was not goofing off or distracted in any way when I sustained the injury to my forearm today. On one prior occasion I burned my forehead and consequently my neck when I jerked from the searing pain. Those burns were terribly painful and were red and raised for quite awhile. However, after getting the terrible blistering, larger than a quarter sized burn today, I concluded that this product is simply unsafe. The heat resistant glove provides a negligible heat barrier and I’m certain that one’s hand would easily be burned if it came into direct contact with the heated barrel for more than 2 seconds. I’ve felt the burning on my fingertips several times myself while wearing. The glove length should most definitely be extended farther down the wrist and Into the forearm inorder to provide the adequate protection needed from the 450 degree ceramic barrel! I have used heated styling products for years with no extreme burn incidents like what I have experienced with this product. It just seems extremely dangerous. I also question the accuracy and safety of the stated heating temperature. How on earth is it considered safe for the general public? I propose that this product’s safety be reevaluated. My injury is definitely very painful. I’ve been taking pain medication all day and can still feel the awful burning. I have looked up burn care for when and if the large blister pops. It is swollen and feels like it has fluid. I’m fairly sure it will also leave an ugly, visible scar. I have spoken to numerous women today who all share burn stories from using similar products. Some say my product might just be too hot, others say they have longer safety gloves. Taking their comments and my experience into consideration I decided to take action and report to your agency today.
