The product, in the report: Shopping Cart
I recently purchased a collapsible shopping cart from Ace Hardware (similar products are sold at WalMart and other stores). When we started to assemble the cart and took it out of the wrapping, the smell was overwhelming. It was coming from the wheels and the rubber handle on the cart. We put it all outside on a balcony and have left it outside for several weeks, but the smell has not diminished at all.
I removed the rubber from the handle and soaked the wheels in detergent mixed with baking soda, but the smell is still nauseating. After I handled the parts my ears started ringing and according to tests my blood count dropped. This happens to me when I am exposed to nitrates because of a blood disorder. I’m wondering if there are toxic levels of nitrates in the rubber/plastic used for the wheels and handles.
