My newborn son was wearing a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Milk Feeding Bib when I had him sitting on my lap and leaned him forward over my left hand to burp him. This is something that I have done with my two elder children when they were babies without incident. I was distracted and when I looked down at my son his head was purple and he was struggling to breathe. When his head leaned forward over the wide cushioned neck of the bib, it put pressure in his airway and made it impossible for him to breathe. Once I was aware of what was going on I was able to reposition his head and he started breathing frantically. We have not used the bib since. In this situation I was the consumer but I am also a healthcare worker with ten years experience as a respiratory therapist in a pediatric ICU. With lots of pediatric airway experience, I should have noticed what was happening sooner. I can’t help but wonder how long the common consumer would continue to occlude the airway before noticing that the child is not breathing.
