Subject: Severe Eye Injury Caused by Metal Tipped Elastic Hood Drawstring.
Attention Clothing Product Designers and Regulators:
This letter is a written notification and description of a severe injury caused to my eye by a metal tipped elastic hood drawstring. The drawstring was on the hood of a jacket labeled by Kenneth Cole. A photograph of the jacket label is attached. On December 3rd, 2019, I wore the Kenneth Cole jacket on my commute home from work, in Chicago by train. At the end of my return trip home, I stood up to exit the train. As I stood up and walked from my seat, the elastic drawstring of the hood of the jacket was held in the seam of the train seat cushion. When I turned to look at where the drawstring was stuck it snapped into my face. The metal tip of the drawstring hit my eye, propelled at high speed by the slingshot action of the elastic cord. I immediately felt immense sharp pain and lost vision in my eye. I needed assistance to exit the train. When I was off the busy train, I called my husband. He came to pick me up and take me to the hospital.
At the hospital I was treated in the emergency room. My eye had extreme damage from the impact of the metal tip of the drawstring. I was bandaged and given eyedrops and pain medication. I have had multiple follow-up treatments for my retina, cornea, and a Lasik doctor; I’ve also had to undergo a cataract surgery. My vision is still not repaired, and I will need a 2nd surgery. The vision in my right eye is currently 300/20; and before this accident, it was 20/20. My right eye pupil is permanently dilated and disfigured. My eyesight is impaired. I now have a permanent disability of my vision because of the Kenneth Cole Jacket. A photo of my injured eye is attached.
I am sending this notice to the Manufacture and the Government to request a recall all jackets with hard tipped elastic drawstrings. [REDACTED]
[REDACTED], the Kenneth Cole Jacket that injured me should not have been made and it should have been recalled to prevent my injury. It was known by the Government and the clothing industry that hoods with elastic draw cords cause injuries. Yet, the Kenneth Cole Jacket with its hard tipped elastic drawstring continued to be sold.
The purpose of this notice is to immediately prevent more eye injuries like mine from happening. I reserve the right to seek compensation for my injury. Please respond that you have received this injury notice letter from me.
Thank You,
