The product, in the report: Steel toed hiking shoe with rubber sole, zip style lacing, man made upper, comfort padding, slip resistant. Black hiking boot with tone on tone heel and toe covering, mid-rise shoe. Enduropro footbed. Size 11. Walmart.com listing https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tredsafe-Men-s-Nola-Steel-Toe-Slip-Resistant-Hiker/486963957 (Walmart listing for the brown option states the shoe has antimicrobial treatment, but neither shoe in store has this information on tags on the product in the brick and mortar store.)
My son bought these size 11 steel toe work shoes at a walmart store locally at the end of August 2019. After one wear, the shoes caused an extreme irritation across his toes and his heel/ankle below the ankle joint, resembling chemical burns. The ‘burns’ sting rather severely. He had little choice but to continue wearing the shoes until he got paid at work again so he could replace them. He purchased them at a physical store in person.
The shoes were sold without a box - I am assuming this was a marketing option to reduce packaging and keep the price lower. They were sold with tags in new condition. There was no fabric content label on the tag, and no tag indicating the fabric had been treated with anything. The tag stated brand, price, and size. I suspect it actually had been treated with an anti-bacterial chemical, but I cannot confirm. The alternate color choice available on the website shows the fabric as having an antibacterial treatment, but the color he purchased does not have this information in the listing.
Had we known this was treated with antibacterial chemicals, we would not have purchased them. He has a known allergy to most antibacterial agents, and is chemically sensitive with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, meaning that this seemingly localized skin reaction has potentially dangerous implications, such as being a trigger for anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock.
This product NEEDS A CLEAR LABEL!!! IF it had been labeled we would have avoided it!
As of yesterday September 19 he has returned the Tredsafe shoes to Walmart, in order to purchase a more expensive competing brand. Given his obvious sensitivity to whatever was in those shoes and his current allergic reactivity, I wanted the shoes as far away from him as possible.
I treated his burns. I am a former EMT-B/first responder. We will be consulting with our allergist/immunologist this week concerning the severity of this reaction.
