Hospital admission Made Apr 2, 2015, sent to the company Apr 10, 2015, published by CPSC Apr 24, 2015
The product, in the report: Skechers “Shape-ups” Fitness Footwear
I was leaving a residence and stepped off of a wooden porch onto a slightly sloped concrete walkway. Upon taking the third step on the walkway with my left foot, I felt my ankle began to turn causing me to lose my balance and fall forward… I tried to shuffle my feet to regain my balance, as I have done before in similar situations, but this time I seemed to be thrust forward at an accelerated rate - almost like someone was pushing me. I knew I was going to fall face forward on the concrete, so I put out both arms to protect my face and head – I fell at such an angle that my right hand and arm took most of the force… As I regained my senses, I tried to raise myself off the concrete but immediately knew something was wrong, as pain shot up my right arm into my shoulder, and I could NOT push up with my right arm… So, I was forced to roll around on the concrete until I could use my left arm to help me struggle to my knees, which by now were burning and throbbing – but not nearly as much as my arm. I tried to stand and almost fell again because I realized my left ankle was hurting and the shape of the soles of the shoes made it harder to stand, but I managed to get my balance and walk to my vehicle… My right arm began to stiffen and swell immediately, and it was almost impossible to bend my right arm... I didn’t know the full extent of my injuries until I arrived home nearly 20 minutes later, and I could barely walk or get undressed. My right arm had swollen dramatically, my left ankle was swelling and both knees and the palms of both hands were bleeding from abrasions from the concrete when I fell... My roommate wanted to take me to the Emergency Room immediately, but because I did not have insurance, I suffered through a terribly painful night until an Urgent Care clinic nearby opened the next morning... Upon examination, the Dr. on call at the clinic IMMEDIATELY referred me to a surgeon... I was scheduled that day for surgery as X-rays showed both bones in my right forearm were broken just below my elbow... I was put on pain medication and scheduled for surgery as soon as possible - a titanium plate and two screws were required to repair the break(s), and I was without use of my right arm (my dominant arm) for nearly 3 months... I slowly regained the use of my right arm, but still (almost 5 yrs later) cannot fully straighten my arm and I have just recently regained MOST of my strength and almost full use of that arm... These shoes are marketed as “Fitness Footwear” that was designed to “improve your life by changing the way you walk” and the enclosed literature states: “Shape Ups are designed to enhance the benefits of walking by stimulating muscles not utilized with standard walking shoes”.... This made these shoes very attractive to someone like me, who had suffered for years with chronic pain, swelling and stiffness in my lower legs, feet and ankles - making walking difficult and painful... I enthusiastically bought these expensive shoes (on sale for $110.00) because I wanted to start walking again and needed to do so as painlessly and efficiently as possible - these shoes seemed to fit the bill. However, there is NO TYPE of WARNING within any literature about these shoes that states the added height and cushioning of the shoe design made them unstable over uneven surfaces - even small cracks in sidewalks, pebbles on the ground or other loose impediments could potentially cause a person to easily lose his/her balance... The ONLY warning is that: “due to this unconventional manner of walking, we suggest you moderate your walking routine in Shape Ups for the first week or two (25 to 45 minutes per day), depending on your level of fitness... NOTHING ELSE... The highly anticipated blessing and relief the design of these shoes promised, has turned into a nightmare for me... Not only did I endure excruciating pain for several days, the damaged caused by my fall cost me over $13,000.00 in medical expenses (which I am still trying to pay off... PLUS, it has taken me almost the all the nearly 5 yrs. since my fall to regain MOST of the strength, full use a flexibility I had in my right arm before - and I will probably NEVER be able to fully straighten it again and I STILL periodically experience throbbing pain and weakness in my right arm.... Although I like the shoes (for the most part) that Skechers USA puts out (and have bought 3 pairs of other, more “conventional styles”), I feel they have EGREGIOUSLY FAILED consumers such as myself who bought in to the promise of a “more comfortable and enhanced” way of obtaining the health benefits of walking, by not warning us of the possible instability this shoe design presents novice users.... I paid a painful, heavy price for this FAILURE - NO ONE ELSE SHOULD...

Hospital admission Made Feb 2, 2015, sent to the company Feb 10, 2015, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2015
The product, in the report: Shoes with curved sole meant to firm muscles while walking
I had purchased a pair of Sketchers Shape Up shoes; I had gastric surgery for weight loss so I needed to work out to help get in shape. I thought it would complement my exercise program . One day I was working around the house and started preparing dinner and had noodles in a storage closet that I used to store food that I was not going to be used on a daily basis. I had reached the noodles and it had fell and got caught in the back of the closet in some coats. As I was reaching to grab them I had lost my footing, the shoes actually threw me forward which caused me to fall on a table that was stored in the same closet. I heard as snap and felt pain in my lower back. I could not walk and get up and down from sitting very well and ended up sitting around for between 1.5-2 weeks. When I was feeling better I started wearing the shoes again and was again wearing them around the house and had gone into the bathroom to relieve myself. I had dropped the roll of toilet paper and bent over to grab it off the floor when again the shoes threw me forward into the wall. I immediately felt a snap and a sharp throbbing pain down my left leg. I could hardly walk and literally cried it hurt so badly. I went to the hospital emergency room and they did a CAT scan and told me to find a pain Dr. and a back Dr. because they could not do anything. I asked him if I needed surgery and he said probably that it appears a disc had herniated and was pinching my nerve. I had gone to a pain Dr. and had gotten an MRI and was recommended to see an orthopedic Surgeon. I ended up having surgery on my back. I wish I could say it ended here. 2 weeks later I bent over to pick up a piece of paper when I felt another snap and again felt a sharp pain down my leg. It was the same exact pain I had felt before. I went back to my Pain Dr. and did another MRI and the same disc re-herniated. Back to the surgeon and back under the knife for the second time in 2 weeks. I wish I could say it ended here Within 11 days I had collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. I don’t remember much of the 6 days prior and I don’t remember going to the hospital. I remember waking up in the hospital where I was informed I had bacterial Spinal Meningitis. They did not think I was going to make it through the night. They did not know what was wrong with me for hours. By the grace of God A Dr. came on shift and recognized how I was reacting to the meds they were giving me and ordered a spinal tap were they found puss running my spine to my brain. He remembered his brother reacting the same way so he knew what to look for, but unfortunately his brother had died. 2 weeks into my month stay at the hospital I had a third surgery. That is 3 back surgeries in 8 weeks. I spent 1 month in the hospital 2 weeks with a home care nurse ended up on disability. I can NEVER have another back surgery, still on very strong pain meds and gained 60 lbs. of the 150 that I had lost. I also can’t hold my Blatter very well and when I have diarrhea I can’t hold that at all and have to wear a diaper. My life will never be the same

The product, in the report: Skechers Shape Up Toning tennis shoe
I was exiting my vehicle when I began to “bounce” like a bunny and could not get my balance until I fell. I fell into a kneeling position and then backwards, landing on my palms, leaning to the right, jamming my right shoulder. I remained in this position until the ambulance arrived. I was transported to Mercy Southwest Hospital where I received a morphine shot. I was then taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Hospital in Los Angeles where emergency surgery was performed on my left knee. I remained in the hospital for 7 days, then sent home with a PICC line for 30 more days; bedridden for an additional 5 months in an immobile brace. I am now dependent on a walker or cane and have very limited body movement.

I purchase a pair of those Skechers Shape-Up Shoes from TJ Maxx. I wore them to work ever day trying to lose weight, cause that is what the shoes advertised they can do. But, instead I ended up needing to have knee surgery in both knees and I also had broken bones fragments in both knees. I had to take off from work (I work 2 jobs) each times and had to prop my legs up at my night job while worked. Due to the surgery I am experiencing a lot of pain, arthritis and problems going up and down my stairs at home. My room in my home is on the 2 floor and because of this problem I’m having to buy a new home with one level and leave my 2nd job (TJ Maxx) due to I can’t stand for a long period of time before my knees start hurting. I just received a letter from my Lawyer stating that Skechers do not feel that they are responsible for what happen to my knees due to wearing there shoes. I believe they should be held responsible due to it was there product that advertised you could lose weight and they new the shoes wear unsafe. Before I started wearing the shoes I had no problems with my knees and since I had my surgery I’m not able to walk up or down stairs without taking one step at a time and holding on to the rails. I ask that you hold Skechers accountable for the product they put out there for consumers like myself.

The product, in the report: Skechers Shape-ups. White sneaker with blue trim and thick grey soul giving a rocking affect while walking.
Bought Sketcher Shape up sneakers to better my workout while walking my dog. After a brisk afternoon walk, I awoke the next morning unable to put any weight on my left heel. After several Doctor appt.s and an MRI it was determined that I had a hairline stress fracture of the heel along with a torn ligament. This took months of pain and medical care to heal causing a lot of pain and suffering.

Stepping forward, my left shoe rocked forward. I was falling forward when I caught myself. My knee twisted and tore my meniscus. I have since had to have repair surgery on that knee and when that did not work I received a total knee replacement to the left knee which was initially injured, I have also sustained injuries as a result of overcompensation to my right knee ( needing total knee replacement at this time) along with neck, back, hip, ankle and foot injuries/ extreme pain as well. It is my understanding that the Sketcher manufacturer of these shoes are excepting no responsibility.

I did buy different stlyes of shoes and even my daughter got some, then I was change to be a cashier so one day when I was ringing up a guest with cat litter it was when I felt 1st that my knee started to get worm and hot and a very painful pain on my left knee and i could not move it, after some days I went to the dr because the company did’nt want to give me works comp because they said it was not work related and that I had to pay every thing from my own pocket (MIR, surgery, therapy, medicines) so going to the dr he mention to me that I had ript my ligaments from my knee and was going to need surgery so on august 9, 2011 I had it and then on august 20, 2011 started with therapys and I havant recover from it. I still have pain on my ankles and knees so I had gone to another dr where I had to pay to get foot orthotic devices to help me a little with all the pain

The product, in the report: Skecher Shape-Up shoes, size 7 women’s.
I purchased my first pair of Skecher Shape-up shoes in September 2009 and began working as a floor nurse, using them intensely & exclusively. A little over a year later I purchased a new pair, then around Sept. or October noted a gradual worsening pain in my right hip; to the point I started limping at work and had coworkers ask me about it. I was so puzzled about this pain, as I’d previously had 4 surgeries to my LEFT foot and a LEFT bulging disc in my low back, so was used to problems happening on my left side. So, I performed my own test and started to wear regular tennis shoes, and this made the hip pain subside noticeably, but it still was there. I tried wearing them again a couple of months later just to test it again, and my hip started hurting again immediately after my shift was over and I knew it was the shoes. At some point it became both hips and I now struggle with chronic hip pain in both hips. I did a [REDACTED] search using Skecher Shape-Ups and hip pain, and there learned about the lawsuits for stress fractures of the hips caused by these shoes. I firmly believe I had a stress fracture initially due to the limping and pain, and sometimes after sitting I’d get up and the hip(s) would almost give out on me. I believe these shoes caused my chronic hip condition now, but have been unable to afford any diagnostic tests such as X-rays or MRI specifically for the hips.

The product, in the report: I have owned four pair of Shape-Ups. Three were tennis shoe style and one was a mary jane style shoe.
I wore Skechers Shape-Ups shoes for two years while working as a full-time bartender and waitress. I wore the shoes almost everyday. I now suffer from constant right foot, heel, and ankle pain. I have had to see a doctor and a physical therapist but I am still in pain daily. My physical therapist and my doctor both advised me to quit wearing Shape-Ups due to my pain, which I have done. I have never had a problem with my foot or ankle prior to wearing these shoes.

The product, in the report: rocker bottom shoes
On April 30,2012 I was walking to my car and fell. My right ankle turned under and when I tried to keep myself from falling my left ankle turned under and popped. I was wearing my Sketchers shape-ups at the time, these were my only pair of shoes. The orthopedic doctor said that I had severely sprained my left ankle causing injury to the tendons all the way around my ankle. I had also moderately sprained my right ankle. He was very puzzled at the fact that I had sprained both ankles at the same time. I was out of work for a month, suffered a lot of pain and still do, and I had to have several weeks of physical therapy to try to get my ankles back in shape.

The product, in the report: Sketcher Shape Ups
After wearing my shape up shoes for several months as my primary source of footwear, I experienced a ruptured achilles and had to undergo surgery and physical therapy. My foot is still not the same after the injury and my calf muscles and achellies still continue to strengthen one year post injury. I was performing a task that I would normally in my job (skipping to music) when the incident occurred. I was treated at a local ER and sent to my specialist for surgery and then onto physical therapy for rehabilitation. The shape up shoes rocking motion encouraged the continuous stretching and contracting of my achellis (attached to the calf muscle as advertised on television and ads). I feel this action may have been a contributing factor to the injury even though I was not wearing the shoes at the moment the injury occurred.

The product, in the report: sketchers Shape Ups mens. size:9 color: navy/silver
Hello there, My name is [REDACTED], 28 year male from New Jersey. I bought 2 pairs of sketchers Shape ups around 1 year and 3 months ago. I love to do work out, its my passion. I was using shape ups from all most by the time I bought it. I jog everyday around 30 min with my shoes on. And also I wear them all most all day for about 12 hours. As I am a working person I have to stand at least 7 hours a day. My problem was started after 7-8 months, I had a very bad pain in my knees, first it was started with the left knee followed by the feet pain and pain in the craft muscles. Regular pain killer didn’t work so I have consulted a doctor, he did MRI for my knees and the report says that I have a chance of arthritis and my knees are damaged. I should not walk without wearing my knee caps. I have spent lot of money on MRI and medications. . Also while using shape ups I felt a fall and injuries few times. I strongly believe that my situation is because of the shoes. I have changed my shoes from last 3 months and I can say that I am feeling better. I am very much exercise loving person due to these reasons I cannot freely jog and run. I want justice. I am ready to give you my reports and proofs.

I began wearing Sketchers Shape-Up shoes in April, 2011 after returning to my passion to work as a bartender/server. In September, 2011 I discontinued wearing the shoes after noticing my toes having a “burning” sensation and I started to develop back and hip pain. I continued to work in classic Sketchers shoes and the pain continued to intensify. On Feb. 2, 2012 I was forced to leave work because I was unable to walk do to the pain.
I have made several visits to my primary physician and a visit to an orthopedic since that time. MRIs and X-rays show that I have a bulging disc in my lower back, which is pinching a nerve causing my feet to tingle. I also have been diagnosed with a labral tear in my right hip and a glutues medium tendon tear in my right buttock. I have also developed bone spurs in my right hip.
As of this date, 2/22/12, I have been unable to work since 2/1/12. I have accumulated nearly $800.00 in medical bills, with more anticipated, as I have been referred to a pain clinic and have an appointment scheduled for Monday, 2/22.
I have been active and working on my feet nearly all my life. I have not suffered any trauma or injuries to my back or hips. I am convinced these shoes are the cause of my current condition.

Purchased “Shape Up’s” and wore them for approx. 8 months and then when going out to lunch, I fell out of my car because my hip was no longer working. Took about 25 minutes for the pain to stop and I could walk normally again. I went to the DR, but he nor I was aware of any shoe issues. I spoke to my niece about it, and he stated it was my shoes as she also had experienced hip pain and threw hers shoes away. I stopped wearing the shoes, but the pain persists... Now I have off and on pain in my left hip, If I sit incorrectly or for a long period of time (at work) I will have a burning sensation, severe pain, and may not be able to walk for a short period.

After I started wearing the scetchers shoes I had to go to a nerouligist because I was getting dizzy. I continued wearing them not knowing that was the problem. I now have problems with my ankles poping my knees pop and my right hip has severe pain and it pops the loudest. Also my left hill of my foot has alot of pain when I walk. A couple of days ago I switched to my other shoes that are not shape ups and my hill of my foot is not hurting as bad. I did not have any of these problems until I started wearing the shape up shoes. I had know idea that the shoes could be linked to my problems. Now that I look back on everything it had to be the shoes. It was my understanding that the shoes were suppose to help tone up but all they have done to me is make me have severe pain. I wore the shoes for about 1 year and 6 months I am currently not wearing them anymore. Thank you for listening. [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Skechers, Shape Ups Size 8.5 Womans, White/Silver
On Nov 13th 2011 I was walking in my Shape ups down the flight of stairs that leads to my front door. I reached the second to the last step and the shoes tipped me over which made me miss the last step. I knew I broke my ankle as soon as I landed. The pain was unbearable. The next morning I went to my Doctor and had xrays done to reveal that my ankle was indeed broken in 3 places. Since I had no medical insurance I had to go to county hospital. I was told by the Doctors there that being a Diabetic increases my chances for infection so they were unable to do surgery. They casted me for about a month. At which time I went back only to find my ankle was not healing properly and was casted again, only this time the cast was to my thigh. I had been told from the very start that I could not put any weight on this left foot at all. So from the day I fell I could no longer work. I did apply for disability and was only granted $171 per week. I can not pay any of my bills. My husband and I have been having problems and this injury as only made matters worse. The pressure of having to take care of me in my opinion has made my husband resent me and he now seldom comes home. I’m left here to fend for myself. I have 12 stairs in my house leading to my bedroom and 21 stairs from my front door leading to my driveway. I have to maneuver these stairs on my rear end. I am still in a lot of pain and can not sleep. This fall from these shoes has devastated my life. I have no idea when I can return to work and I don’t know how I will survive financially.

The product, in the report: Sketcher’s Shape Up sneaker
I bought Sketcher’s Shape Ups as I was hoping to firm up muscles as advertised. In a few weeks I began to notice pain in the right ankle which progressed to tendonitis of the right ankle. I called my podiatrist who advised me to stop wearing the Shape Up sneakers. I was in terrible pain and my ankle was swollen and I had difficulty walking. The podiatrist gave me a cortizone injection which helped alleviate the pain. For 3 months I visited the podiatrist until approximately 3 months later I returned to normal functioning and gradually became pain free and the swelling stopped.

I purchased the Sketcher Shape Ups, in black, at $114.99, this past year. I purchased them for my job as a waiter, as the advertisement and accompanying DVD, indicated the health benefits of the Sketch Shape Ups.. I used them, until two months ago. The reason being, I have developed sever pain in my ankles and sides of my legs. I moved to a cross trainer, made by Nike, and have been able to gain only partial mobility back, yet for a high paced active restaurant, where I work, the Shape Ups have comprimised my ability at my job. I have never had problems with my feet or legs before this. And, it is very distressing. I have consulted [REDACTED]grocery, for a refund and was told to contact Sketchers. I am at a point where it is important to seek medical attention and a consultation about the situation. Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated. [REDACTED][REDACTED]
