The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

Made Aug 16, 2014, sent to the company Aug 25, 2014, published by CPSC Sep 9, 2014

The product, in the report: Navy Blue Keds

My daughter started a new job at [REDACTED] and was requested to wear Keds shoes. She has never owned a pair of Keds before so I went out and bought her a pair. Her work scheduled varies week to week and on average she works about two days, 4 hours each shift. The first couple times she wore the shoes, her feet became a bit itchy but thought nothing of it. Then when she would work two consecutive days she noticed to be getting hives and it becoming very itchy. I never thought it could be her shoes, just thought maybe she ate something, therefore I gave her and allergy medication. She then had a couple days off and during those days, the hives and itch got a lot better, however again we never thought it could be the shoes. Then about 2 weeks ago, she was scheduled to work 3 days in a row. After those three days, my daughter showed me her feet and was complaining of uncontrollable itch, and I noticed blisters, redness, and even open sores on her feet. It almost portrayed burnt skin. I then took her into to see a medical professional who said that it was definitely an allergic reaction. She was prescribed oral antibiotics along with topical antibiotics to prevent any infections. Her sores were so bad that she was unable to leave the house for a whole week, in order to prevent infection. We thought of different things that could have caused this reaction and she did not eat nor did she come into contact with anything new for her, except her new Keds. Then I pieced it all together and realized that her feet got better and then got worst depending on her work schedule and how much she had to wear her shoes. The three days in a row that she had to wear them was what “burnt” her feet. We then googled “Keds shoe allergy” and found a couple cases of the same reaction others have had.

The product, in the report: Black and pink canvas Keds shoes with white soles. No laces, criss cross stretchy bands instead. Little metal starts all over shoes. Two stars on the back of the shoe caused incident.

We purchased a pair of Keds girls shoes (KY40098A) from Kohls. My daugther 4 year old was cleaning out her closet one day and while organizing her shoes, was cut deeply on her upper leg by a metal star that had come loose from the back of the shoe and was rotating freely along a pink band. We were able to treat the cut with out going to the emergancy room. We cut the stars from the back of the shoes but of course she still refused to wear them anymore after that.

We purchased the Keds “Know it all” girls shoes from kohls.com in July in a size 13 for my 5-year-old daughter. When helping her put them on for the first time in late August, the stars on the back of the shoes sliced through my thumb. The same thing happened again a few weeks later. After she pierced through the skin on her heel shortly thereafter, we stopped wearing them but were not able to return them because the return deadline had passed.

I just saw the recall information while at my local Kohl’s this past week.

The product, in the report: KEDS girls sneaker size 12 style number KY40098A

My 5 year old daughter was putting on her KEDS sneakers (currently subject to recall: ky40098a) which she had had for approximately one month. She screamed and came over to me with blood dripping off her hand. She had cut her hand on one of the small metal stars decorating the sneaker. The wound was approximately 2 inches long, but did not require medical attention other than washing with soap and water and applying a bandage. When I checked the shoes, I did notice that the points on the stars were very sharp and I decided that I would assist her with the shoes from that point on. When I say the notice of recall, I immediately knew why the shoes were problematic.

The product, in the report: Keds girls shoes, slip on, black with stars

The Keds shoes on current recall have been a problem for us as well. The star grommets came loose and acted like “spurs.” She has been scratched and poked by them repeatedly. They are her favorite shoes, so we have tried to glue the grommets in place, but it only holds a little while.

The product, in the report: Keds Slip on Girls Tennis shoes, black and pink with white sole

My 7 year old daughter wore her slip on tennis shoes to school (Keds), and came home with cuts on her lower leg. She said that the stars on the heel of the shoe started coming off and cut her. After investigating the shoe, the points on a couple of the stars were pulling away from the shoe, causing a sharp point coming off of the shoe, causing the cut.

We bought our 8-year old daughter a pair of Keds “Know It All” shoes two weeks ago from Zappos.com. She came home from school today and said the stars on the back of her shoes had scratched her, and then showed us a 2 and 1/2 inch scratch on her leg from the metal stars. (We took a picture of the scratch and have it on file). She also said that her friend had the exact same brand and style of shoe, and had to go to the nurse several days ago for a bad cut she got on her finger from the stars on the back of the shoe when she was taking them off.
